Description
After many years I'm getting back into painting miniatures....This little bugger is a Necron Wraith, a cold and soulless killing machine, well it will be when I finish the paint job!
I'm using a mix of blue and rust colour washes over a dark metallic to suggest its ancient yet alien construction. I've picked out the top of its head in a lighter colour to reinforce the skull-like shape.
Anyone here collect and paint miniatures?
EDIT
Dam it's so hard to capture the details and correct colour of this mini, any tips from you fine folks out there?
Came out a little better now using the Macro feature on the cam, still his alien blue tint ain't showing through.....
Thanks for the tips folks, just need to finish this tinker now!

"Technically" I'm an Imperial Guard player... but I basically got miniatures from every races scattered across and barely a real playable army.

Hey, from what I can see that's turned out nice! As for taking the photo, I would suggest that in the background you get a light blue to white gradient (possibly something like this: [link] ). Also you could try to have your light source coming from behind the camera. My miniature photography isn't the best so I will do a little research on a forum I frequent (www.mainlymedieval.com/ozpainters). The website has some of the best painters in Australia on there and always seem to be happy on giving their tips and advice on almost anything miniature related!

Light source from behind could be cool I'll try it out when I finish painting this little metal killer....
Thanks again....

Here Painted five Termagants and gave up.. I wasted way too much time on these, and then I had no one I knew to play with so I just completely stopped
Maybe in the future I'll wake the Hive Mind and with it its minions but I don't think I'll ever really paint them again

There are some pretty easy ways to paint tyranids. Especially with some magic dipping sauce.

You apply the basic colors, sloppily works, and then yes, you just dip 'em and shake 'em and that's it.

Yea big shame :/
I don't know but playing with friends just encourages me.. I need to be pushed to do such things, especially 'cause it's so freaking expensive
But yea, I hope you'd find someone to play with, it's a great game!

I havnt use a fuji camera in my life so I dont know, but somewhere you should have a ISO button and try to use the lowest ISO you can with the light you have, that will remove the grain

take your pictures with the macro function on
The thing I find with miniatures is that you pick on your own tricks... no matter how much people will tell you what to do, you won't get better until you experiment with different textures of paint and different paintbrushes and techniques.. =/

Details seem to have come out a little better now though I still can't capture his alien blue tint
Wow those mini's look awesome I bet you can't wait to paint those up! I may jump ship from games Workshop to be honest their pricing is out of control!
Thanks for the helpful advice I'm looking forward to so more of your minis

yeah... may be if your BG was less blue, I use a sheet of white bright paper folded as a BG, and if you can put a white lamp near it it might help, but try to diffuse it by putting something translucent white between your light ans your subject, or else you'll end up with flares

A good tip, in the future base the model before you go and paint it, leave out the extra stuff like static grass but put the material like sand in before you paint.
For the model itself looks good but feels as though it's missing the proper hi lights to really let the detail stick out, but that might be the camera, try dry brushing with a litter colored metal to pick out those edges and details in the metal.

GAVade In reply to DiceMasterOM3G4 [2011-07-10 15:20:27 +0000 UTC]
Yeah not sure why I didn't base some gravel before undercoating it. In the old days as a kid I always used to base models after finishing the paintjob but now everyone seems to do it from the start.
Hopefully the new photo shows the highlights a little better but its still missing his alien blue tint....
Thanks for the help

Ah a blue tint sounds cool and would really drive home that alien metal kind of look, I would try using a blue wash over parts that you want it to have that, might need to use a model as a fallguy to experiment on and see how you like it, but good luck sounds cool. My only regret is my Forces of chaos will not get to show your... pathetic automatons what real power is

Awesome!!
By the way, I don't know if those little paint tubes are as expensive over where you live, but we found out that's it's just plain old acrylic... so acrylic form the dollar store works just as well as long as you put some varnish on it after. I also found that liquid acrylic used for airbrushing go super well

GAVade In reply to Jutchy [2011-06-12 23:33:05 +0000 UTC]
Yeah GW's products are insanely overpriced for what they are. Yeah I have a lot of acrylic paint from back in the day which I've used but I bought those metallic colours because I didn't have any......
Bloody model cost me £12! Just for 1!
Gits!
Oh cool you can airbrush? I can't brush to save my life...

Jutchy In reply to GAVade [2011-06-13 05:02:32 +0000 UTC]
I won an airbrush but I never practiced. I meant the paint used to aribrush can be used with a paintbrush too. it's much much much more liquidy so it's super useful for all those tiny crack details. It avoids them being filled up by too thick paint. I use this:[link] I also find that this paint tends to chip a LOT less. They also have different varnish like mat, satin and gloss so you can even make effects (for exeample, I use mat finish on all my monsters, but I use satin on fabrics and gloss on the teeth and in the mouth to make it look like they're drooling.)

I was so contemplating using 2 magnets to stick together his spine!
I managed in the end to pin it together after making quite a mess, I burrowed out too much of the metal I snapped part of its lower spine off and slightly crushed the top part.
Managed to glue it all back together with a paper-clip for support using super duper strong super glue...
Though I know realize you dislike us Necrons lol, death to the Tau!

I mean my magnet, to drop your Necrons into a star with. But magnets are good for interchangeable weapons like the ones on my battle suits and your Necron lord's arms.
Super glue will be your best friend in all your modeling adventures.
And Necrons are worthless scrap.
