Description
So recently I have REALLY being influenced by my intrigue into Japanese lore and monsters. Last year I get a small 3D concentration based on different stories such as the rabbit on the moon and akabeko etc, but after getting my assignment to turn a old master's piece, in my case Carravaggio's TheΒ Matyrdom of Saint Matthew, into something of my own, I found myself getting really excited thinking about yokai and folklore.Okay, first of all, Carravaggio's a god (artistically speaking at least, in real life he was more of a bar-fighting prick), and doing a tonal study of one of his pieces has literally single-handedly opened my eyes to the brilliance of Baroque and Renaissance paintings (I used to think that style of painting was boring and uneventful; how I scoff at my naive former self hohoho). However, for my assignment, I was tasked to "kill the father", or take the inspiration of the theatrical stage o' Carravaggio set up and DESTROY it (and him haha). In the end, you can still look at my piece and go like "hmm this looks vaguely familiar", so I think I mortally wounded the father, but failed to deliver the final blow. He crawled away, that bastard!
But, in the end it's all good: my teacher liked it, it got featured in the AP show at my college and I got a lot of feedback.
If you have a critique, please give it!

Awesome! Brilliant, really! Reminds me of the Hyakki Yagyou myth, where a hapless traveler stumbles into a gathering of Youkai and survives by pretending to be a Buddha Statue. As for Caravaggio, nice to see someone else who's not from Italy who knows about him (though alas, I can't say I appreciate him, since my History of Art teacher went really overboard with him). Anyway, excellent job

Phenomenal piece! I'm a huge fan of Japanese folklore creatures.
Now, komainu and baku are meant to stave off wicked and dangerous yokai. Is that what they're there to do, or do they even regard the unlucky mortal as deserving of their aid?

Wish I could put more thought into this at the moment but I just wanted to say I really like your rendition of the Baku! The piece has so much going on I will need to look into it more.

Mythology buff here! I spy with my little eye: an oni, a baku, a kitsune, some bakeneko, a tengu, and a kappa. I'll admit being unclear as to the masked woman (a yuurei?) or Fox Mask...

Wow, that really impressive- you basically got them all! All that's left is the yuki-onna (the white woman), the inugami, and the komainu! The fox mask is the kitsune, just in their human deceiving form haha

Teach me your ways, o wise one.Β Β
(Also, this is amazing. I'm an amateur with oils so I know how difficult it can be to paint with them. But the work definitely pays off! Plus, Japanese monsters are awesome!)

I don't know if I can!Β Β
And thank you! The way I work with oils though reminds me a lot how I work digitally (and is also not how a lot of oil painters actually use oil), but I think it works, so I'm glad you like it!

I can't really think of anything to criticize here...it's just amazing...8_8
Colors, shadows, lights, composition, anatomy, idea, story, style...everything as it should be, I think. It's amazing
how it still has the traces of your normal style of painting and yet it's a traditional one (+ OILS, WHO THE FUCK CAN
WORK WITH OILS LIKE THIS) and I'm just....ugh.
I really love how you've done the trees in the background. They are stylized, but this way they don't steal the focus. Genius.
The only thing I would maybe consider is the format...? I'd see something more wide for a scene like this probably.
Unless it was a purpose of course!
I love Carravaggio so much, he's my fav too ugh

Thank you so much!
And it would be interesting to see this in a wider shot... had I know how it was going to turn out in the end and how I would have wanted to change it from the original Caravaggio, maybe I would have brought the right stretchers to do that!Β
I'm so glad to be surrounded by fellow fans <3

Very interesting school project, I wish mine were as interesting.
I like how you decided on oriental mythology as a theme for your version of Caravaggio's painting, I personally find it an extremelly interesting topic that allows you to explore various creative settings. I only recognized the Tengu though xD I like the mythology but can hardly consider myself knowlegeble in it!
The colouring and shading of the oils are also great! I can tell how you managed such good feedback.

Right now I have a teacher who's all about letting the students explore the projects we get in their own way, but who knows in future classes! xD
To be perfectly honest, I don't think I've considered the East and West contrast⦠that's a really interesting point.
And I think I loved this project because it did force me to do more research on all the different monsters there are⦠Now I can't even look at Pokemon the same way; so many of them are just yokai with different names.
Thank you so much; it's always a treat to be able to have a real conversations in comments!

You're in college, right? I really hope once I get to college I get to make such creative projects!
I've been meaning to get myself a big ass encyplopedia so I could learn all I could. I know there's the internet, but I can't see it as a replacement for a good old book. Really? I guess things aren't ever as simple as they seem, even PokΓ©mon! You've struck my curiosity now...
You're welcome, I love finding intelligent and talented people over the interwebs (; now that made me seem like a creep xD I'm not, I swear!
