Ah man, I used to ask colorists that question all the time. Here's a nifty trick that I learned: when painting in Photoshop, set your brush tool to "color dodge" when painting highlights. Also, set it to "multiply" when painting shadows. It's not an instant magic trick or anything, but you'll definitely see more intensity in your work.
