The design is not meant to be anti American. Some will view it that way, but that is their right and their interpretation.
It is actually exactly what I wanted when I came up with the concept. I wanted people to view it in their own way, to take a different meaning from it rather than put a phrase or a tagline on it and tell them what it stands for. It fascinates me to think of the reactions people will have. Everything in the design was thought out. It is a simple black and white design, but it will bring up discussion about the many grey areas.
I think Gavins interpretation of the design is awesome, not just the visual but what it means to him. I hope that many more will share their views on what it means to them. I think he did a great job with the design and the visual image brings out so much emotion when you see it. It can be really hard to come up with a concept and convey your thoughts to an artist, but with this design it was as if Gavin knew exactly what I wanted right from the start. It is really one of my favorite designs we have. Most of our designs are fun, cool, and laid back, but this one is meant to make a statement. That statement is meant to be different for everybody.

As someone who is extremely patriotic (and fairly conservative politically), I don't see it that way...although that may have been the way that the client intended it. The way I interpret it, the prison flag represents our government's over-reaching its boundaries and meddling in the private lives of our citizens. The country our founding fathers envisioned was not a place where the government controls what it's citizens eat, drink, watch, say, and do. I believe that the American ideal exists in the constitution and in its people, not at the tip of a bureaucrat's pen or a police officer's nightstick.
But Truck (the client) was really adamant about this image being open to interpretation, which I agree with whole-heartedly. Great art should start discussions, right? If you lean left, you might interpret it completely differently than someone who is more conservative, and that's fine. In fact, that's awesome.
