Description Oldie from a trip to the Mercantour (France), taken with a D350 that I had borrowed for the trip, also had a polarizer filter on iirc.

Thanks I see I was at 28mm, the lens did 18-200mm iirc, why do you suggest the zoom? For the field of view?

Where is this? (By park I mean hehe)

This stream runs down from the Lac d'Allos which is in the Parc National du Mercantour [1 ] in the Hautes-Alpes Maritimes (South-East France) and is the largest natural high-altitude body of water on the European continent (2230m) [2 ]

Thanks It kind of reminds me of "A Fairy Tale" (1997 film), this is the kind of place I'd expect to see small fairies fluttering around

I agree those flowers were really nice, I actually took some more shots that focus just on the flowers but they didn't turn out as nice as this one

gBobly In reply to ElenaHelfrecht [2010-06-07 11:30:37 +0000 UTC]

Slow shutter speeds I find water tends to have the most drastic of transformations with shutter speed, from frozen droplets that resemble hard pellets to soft silky hair-thin streams all overlaid in a path

AkumDara [2010-06-03 13:31:43 +0000 UTC]

That place looks really green! It's almost impossible to find something dead there, you should be happy about this picture. I also like how the water is all smooth, it makes the whole scene look surrealistic.

Thanks This shot was taken at an odd 2000m altitude in early September, most of the plants were still green and/or in flower so it was really pretty

gBobly In reply to kazelee [2010-06-07 11:36:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I hadn't really thought of that actually but you're right, imo they also reinforce all the green surrounding the stream which emphasises it even more

I appreciate you spelling out what you used for the shot. I was going to ask if you used a filter or not. I've been thinking about getting a polarizer, and shots like this just encourage me more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gBobly In reply to SpudMuffin [2010-06-07 11:37:32 +0000 UTC]

There were two reasons for the filter, not only did I play around cutting out some of the reflections on the stream which were causing the WHOLE stream to appear white and silky rather than just the path the water was taking, but it also drops your exposure by a stop which allowed for a longer exposure time

It wouldn't have been the same without them they definitely add some vibrance to what otherwise would have been a bit of a plain shot

Thank you It took some convincing to get me girlfriend at the time to accept to visiting the lac at dusk rather than during daylight, and then I had to make sure she didn't get too bored while I fiddle with the camera And ironically the best shot wasn't from the lac itself but from this stream we went passed driving up to it ^^

how long did you exposed?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gBobly In reply to thesentimental [2010-05-29 09:02:32 +0000 UTC]

The EXIF says 16/10th so I'm assuming that's 1.6 seconds ^^ I had a little tripod with me and the polarizing filter was also adding a stop which made up for the fact it was still a bit bright.
