Description
EDIT: The model has been improved. I pretty much halved the poly count and re-done the texture (which took me forever ><).You can see the old versions here: [link]
Old bookcase, I think I spent a bit too much time on this one. But the rooms are going to look so much better I think. Onto the other things!

I love how you've reused UV space so well. There's only half a dozen different book textures and then you've reused them and spread them out nicely over others. Awesome stuff!

Ahh thanks for the compliment! I'm still learning how to optimize uv space Unfortunately if you looked at my older model work the uv/texture placements are ridiculous. ^^ It's good to know I'm making progress haha.

Looks neat! Think this version of the bookcase is the best, like the improvement you have done to the wood texture.^^

Thanks! I spent a bit of time on it, but it seems nothing is going to be perfect haha ^^

I'd say this is perfectly good model. If a 1321 tri model causes a problem in these days, there's something seriously gone wrong with the game engine or code optimization..
Just delete all hidden faces and it will be fine.

Just submitted a better version. Do take a look and let me know what you think! It's true that engines can probably handle it, but I really was being silly and forgot to delete the faces haha.

It's looking good but I think the polycount is too high. If I were you I wouldn't have put two polys for the sides of the books. One is more than enough! What you could have done to emulate the roundness was to bake the normal map from a higher poly version where the roundness was present and you wouldn't need the polygons to give the impression it's here.
For the texture, you could have saved some (small) texture space by putting the uvs of the two sides of the book covers on top of each others instead of making two different uvs for the same texture. Also, the wood texture doesn't seem of good quality on the final render (the front side of the bookcase especially) which is weird for something on a 1024x1024 map. I'm wondering if it's not your wood texture that isn't of good quality enough or if it's a render problem.

Thanks for the feedback, after I started to texture I did realise that a lot of the sides were pointless. I think the blurriness was partially the texture not being sharp enough, and partially because it did not take up enough space on the uvs.
I'll try to see if I can change that later. For now I guess I can pretend it's going to be used for some physics play or something lol.

No problem!
Or maybe if you want it to be a part of a bigger scene what you can do is to use a tilable texture for the wood. Looking at it now I think the problem is that you don't have the good scale from one object to another. The books should take less place on the uv map and the wooden parts (especially the front) should take a lot more space. Also, unless you want the player to see the back of the bookcase, I'd suggest you remove this face. It'll remove you one polygon and space on the uv map.

Hey, I've more than halved the polycount now and the uvs are much better. Will update soon!

That's a huge improvement! Great job!
Now there's maybe two things that you can improve. Your normal map looks too strong in my opinion and it doesn't look natural. Also the specular map shows enough on the books but I think it should show a lot more on the wood.

That's great now! It's just a little rough on the textures but I like it, it gives a style to your model!

What's the poly count so far?
What project is this for???

It was for my major project (which technically is 'finished' already), but I'm polishing up some old models for my portfolio, the texture is 1024 and the it's 1321 Tris. Which is kind of a lot.
