Average height: 0.9-1.5 meters (3-5ft)

Average weight: 6.3-20.4 kilograms (14-45lbs)

Threat level: Medium

Aggression level: Very high

Known mutations:

-Ravenous bloodlust. Will attack anything it can catch and devour it. Prefers to kill prey via tearing out the throat/severing the jugular. The heart is often torn out and eaten. Any blood spilt by the victim is lapped up by the creatures.

-Can emit a pheromone that attracts other Cryptids. Often used to mark areas with potential prey via urine.

-Excellent night vision allows the Cryptids to find prey in the dark as though it where broad daylight. Eyes give off an eerie red-yellow glow.

-Excellent sense of smell and hearing typical of canines.

-Knife-like teeth ideal for cutting through flesh with ease. Has been known to be able to bite through steel chain fences and barbed wire.

-Exceptional agility. Cryptids are very fast, aided by their thin, skeletal frames. Under cover of night, the Cryptids's speed and agility makes it seem as though they can appear and disappear at will.

-Excellent pack hunters. Like most canines, Cryptids are exceptional pack hunters and are very intelligent. Will often use diversions, ambushes, and traps to hunt and kill prey.

-Limited ability to mimic sounds of prey. Perhaps the most disturbing ability displayed by the Cryptids. Often used to lure unsuspecting prey into an ambush or to terrorize and confuse prey.

History:

A string of bizarre cattle mutilations baffled the former mining town of Chloride in the Arizona desert. Cows, sheep, goats, and even chickens all displayed the same tell-tale signs of a horrific attack: the throats of the animals where torn out, the hearts removed and nearly all the blood was drained from the bodies. Minutes before the attacks, which almost exclusively happened at night, witnesses reported hearing the screams and cries of some kind of animal. By the time the farmhands went outside to investigate, the livestock where massacred in a grizzly fashion. Very little evidence was left behind, aside from large tracks that lead in several directions.

The tracks themselves where unusual in that they resembled that of a coyote or wolf, but much bigger. The killings where initially dismissed as coyote attacks, but the size of the tracks and the brutality of the kills led many to be skeptical. Some believed that a large, rabid dog was on the loose while others suggested a wolf or pack of wolves where responsible. Regardless of speculation, the grizzly killings continued. Children where forbidden from going out at night and a curfew was put in place after 9:00. The entire town was paralyzed with fear as the mysterious predators killed unimpeded.

The first human casualty of these attacks would be on March 5th. An old man who owned a farm about a mile outside of Chloride was tending to his cattle in the early morning hours when he noticed his animals began to grow restless. The cattle ran in circles around their pen, howling and groaning anxiously. The old man took notice of this and immediately scanned the surrounding area for anything that could be bothering his animals. The still-dark morning sky made it difficult to get a clear view of anything in the desert. From the corner of his eye he swore he saw movement to his right and immediately spun around. Nothing. Nothing but dirt and shrubs. Then he heard the breathing; a raspy, labored breathing that seemed to be coming from every direction.

Beginning to sweat with nervousness and his cattle becoming ever more restless, the man contemplated slowly walking back into his house and grabbing his shotgun. Taking one last look around to see if the coast was clear, he slowly began to walk backwards towards his house. The breathing sounds got closer, still coming from every direction. Some sounded as though they where from behind, others passing right by him. Despite this he could still see nothing, and this only fed his growing terror. Then he saw it: a pair of red-yellow eyes shining in the night approximately 15 meters away from him near a barn. These unearthly orbs stared right into his soul and pierced the darkness. Their unflinching gaze was almost hypnotizing.

This was enough to send the man sprinting towards his house, running as fast as his aged physique would let him. He opened the wooden door and slammed it shut, slumping to the ground with his back against the door. He could hear something scratching at the door slowly, like a something was trying to get inside. He reached up and locked the door before grabbing his shotgun and some ammunition off the counter. As he loaded the weapon, the scratching stopped and all went quiet for a while. After about a minute of silence, the carnage began. Loud barking and the panicked howls of cattle filled the air as a commotion outside grew in intensity. One by one the sounds of cattle stopped, replaced by the disgusting sound of flesh tearing and liquid spilling.

The old man charged out his house and aimed his shotgun towards the cattle pen, but found there was no cattle to defend; only mutilated corpses. In the mere moments since he ran to his house and came back out, his cattle had been butchered as many others had before. However here it seemed the assailants had anticipated the old man's return and left the carcasses uneaten. The old man approached the pen with his weapon still aimed at the ready. Suddenly he heard the mooing of a cow coming from behind the barn, the same barn where he saw the terrifying red-yellow eyes. Believing that one of his cattle may have survived and the assailants simply left, the man approached the barn carefully. Again the mooing came from just around the corner of the barn. With his shotgun raised, the man went around the corner to investigate, and he too was violently torn apart.

It would be a week until the man and the cattle would be discovered, and by then scavengers had nearly picked the bones clean. Now with a confirmed human death, the town of Chloride was gripped with terror. However answers would soon come in the form of an animal carcass brought in by two young men hunting for coyote on March 15th. The creature was shot and killed just outside of town around noon. When the body was examined by the local physician, more questions arose than answers. Physically the creature was clearly some kind of canine, but nothing like any of the townspeople had ever seen before. It was nearly hairless, aside from patches of fur here and there. Thick scabs and open sores dotted it's emaciated frame. A row of quill-like hairs ran down it's back. Most striking where the lidless eyes which had glazed over and become discolored, but still retained a red-yellow tint.

Even in death, the creature was utterly terrifying. It seemed so familiar yet so utterly foreign at the same time. An autopsy found the partially digested remains of small animals, including a dog and chickens. It seemed as though the cattle killer had finally been slain. However others where quick to point out that an animal this size couldn't possibly be able to kill entire flocks of livestock by itself. The time and distance between attacks seemed to suggest the presence of multiple individuals, possibly even a pack of the creatures. If the size of the tracks found at the sites was any indication, the creature that had been shot was probably just a youngster. Somewhere in the sweltering desert, more of these beasts where out there.

Various names for the creatures began to circulate, such as "Night Demons", "Werewolves" and "Chupacabra". The latter was in reference to a vampiric monster of Mexican origin that was said to suck the blood from goats. Indeed, these monsters let nothing of their prey go to waste; even the blood was drained from their victims. In the days that followed, numerous witnesses reported seeing strange dog-like creatures out in the desert or crossing roads. One police patrol car was dispatched to a small ranch that reported seeing strange creatures harassing their sheep. The squad car was later found in a ditch mile away from it's destination, torn apart and the interior caked with dried blood spatters. A search of the vehicle indicated the officers didn't even have time to defend themselves before they where killed.

The final straw for the town of Chloride came when a mother and her child where attacked and killed in their own backyard in the evening. The woman thought she heard her child crying and followed the sound to an old rusted shed the child frequently played near. It was here that the creatures ambushed and killed the woman. Her child had already been devoured by the creatures long before she even heard the crying. Bounties offering large sums of money where spread to nearby towns hoping to bring in skilled hunters to track down and kill the murderous beasts. Hunters from across the state and even the country showed up in spades to try and collect the bounty.

Over the course of the next few days, several animals purported to be the killers where shot and brought in. Most turned out to be coyotes, some appearing to show signs of deformities but nothing to the extreme of the creature killed days ago. Almost as often, several of the hunting parties or individual hunters would simply disappear, only for their mutilated remains to be discovered later. This was enough to cause some to give up on the hunt and return home, as they felt no some of money was worth being killed. One night, a persistent group of hunters camped out in the middle of the desert to take a break from their search. Well aware that this was the hour when the creatures where most likely to attack, the men slept in shifts and always kept a rifle within arms length. The night was relatively quiet until one of the men on guard duty heard a strange sound coming from a nearby bush, almost like a person groaning in pain.

Upon investigating, the hunter was blindsided by one of the creatures which pinned him to the ground, furiously snapping at his face. The thing was nearly as tall as a man and had eyes that glowed like embers. The commotion woke the other hunters who rushed over to help their friend, shooting the creature in the rear hind leg and forcing it off. Soon more of the monsters showed up, seemingly appearing out of thin air. The hunters lost 3 men to the impossibly fast creatures before finally driving them off. The men stayed awake all night on the lookout until sunrise where they then tracked the wounded creature back to a small cave. The creature had died from it's injuries, laying in a pool of it's own blood. The dead beast was surrounded by innumerable bones belonging to different animals, including human remains.

Near the back of the den where several rusted barrels of Nebranium waste. At some point, this cave was used as a dumping site for Nebranium but had long since been abandoned. The hunters began to suspect that these creatures where mutations of some kind, maybe made by the government as weapons. The hunters set fire to the den, hoping that this would force the creatures out of the area to find a new home. Upon returning to town, the hunters found several unmarked black vehicles and strange men in biohazard suits carrying away the remains of the creature killed days earlier and loading the corpse into a military truck. Accompanying them where men in suits and ties wearing sunglasses to hide their features. The hunters where interrogated and disclosed the location of the den to the strange men who claimed that the situation was under control.

The shady individuals got back into their vehicles left the area with the body of the canine-like creature. Since their visit, sightings of the creatures began to gradually diminish since their visit to the town. This prompted the usual conspiracy theories that the monster's where government weapons gone awry. However the truth was that these where unprecedented mutations that the government was gradually beginning to link to Nebranium contamination. Occasionally, unmarked vehicles manned by armed men in biohazard suits could be seen in the desert, where it was assumed they where purging any remaining creatures.

Though it seemed that the "Chupacabras" or "Night Demons" had been vanquished, their ghastly presence remained in the town of Chloride. Many where still afraid to leave their homes at night and leave children and livestock unattended. Then, 2 months after the events in Chloride, other counties in Nevada began to report cattle mutilations, missing persons, and sightings of bizarre dog-like creatures. The Night Demon's reign of terror had begun anew...
