Description In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic continuity there are humans who have regressed to a feral state called Overlanders. I was intrigued by the notion of humans who survived the Xorda attack living above ground, and then cobbling together a civilization in the aftermath using pieces of old advanced tech as well as their own comparatively primitive means of survival. Overlanders have had to undergo severe and very speedy mutation to avoid dying off in the gene bombs so their physiology is not pretty to look at and even hampers the Overlanders to a certain degree, but they are much stronger and more viable than many mobians or humans that currently exist.

In the Archie comics Robotnik and Snively are both Overlanders but lack the Overlander trait of four fingers instead of five. In my continuity I adjusted things a bit. Not all Overlanders are needlessly cruel any more than any tribesman might be and Robotnik and Snively probably have some ancestry to Overlanders by are not Overlanders themselves (in my Freebound series true Overlanders are more often than not horrifically mutated).
This Overlander here wears a gas mask he recovered probably from a fallen human soldier. Overlanders have developed specifically to handle the conditions of the world during the gene bomb attacks so now that the poisons are leaving the atmosphere their finding it more and more difficult to breathe.

I imagine Overlanders a lot like Neanderthals, and like Neanderthals they may be approaching extinction with the rise of a subspecies of their own kind.

Problem I had with the Overlanders (in the Archie run) is that they're basically a poor man's Orcs. Not the layered Warcraft Orcs or the interesting Orcs from Lord Of The Rings. I mean the generic 'evil race' Orcs are usually depicted as in most fantasy stories. Also, for a race of supposed xenophobic neanderthals, they are remarkably less preachy about it than the 'civilised' Mobians.

Personally as with many things 'Sonic' I think ideally you could embrace those old simplicities and by doing so make them more interesting. Maybe to the Mobians Overlanders practically are considered 'orcs' but to the Overlanders themselves they hardly are. The mobians always did strike me as unironically racist towards humans and I used that as a theme of my stories: the possibility of prejudice on both sides of a conflict, even among the 'good guys'.

If I re-did Overlanders I'd almost make them like a cross between Warcraft orcs and ents. They have a primitive society and a warlike one, but they are losing their footing and being forgotten. They are for most intents and purposes the last true humans. The underlanders were practically brainwashed but the Overlanders remember the heritage of technology and their right to the world. Even in the twilight years they regard themselves as the last gasp of a species which used to command the Earth, rather than being just another embattled species on its surface.

See, I like that idea better. Maybe have some sort of techno-spirituality among the Overlanders, like prayers to the Neon God, the God In The Machine or the God Of The Digital Mainframe, collecting scraps of ancient broken technology in the same way Medieval pilgrims collected scraps of wood said to come from the Holy Land, treating once-common appliances like holy relics, swearing by minor deities named after long-deceased inventors, or even using scraps of technology to create jewellery capable of warding off evil spirits. Hell, maybe they'd see Robotnik's robots as avenging angels of Mankind's divine wrath.

Pre-Genesis Wave Mobius had a much more darker backstory than I remembered.

Wait...so the Sonic comics have a post-apocalyptic backstory? O_O

Yup! Mobius is actually the planet Earth which has been changed over decades into it's current animal controlled state.

I think it's kind of an overlooked aspect of Sonic lore

I always thought that the at the start, the Overland and the Overlanders might have been a Mad Max-like nation during their first centuries of existence

Now that I think about it, they're also a bit like post-apocalyptic Vikings or barbarians ala the various late-Roman Empire germanic tribes as well...

Not a lot of shaving in the Overlander world
Actually that would be fascinating if Overlanders had horses (or megafauna equivalents).
It would be like the Russian calvary charging tank platoons

Apparently not. After all, your own Overlander drawing had a mustache. XD

Or hunting dogs. Or the Megafauna equivalent thereof.

True. XD

Nice concept!  Granted, my take on a Sonic reboot would not have the Xorda invade Earth at the start of the story, and instead have it be a World War III scenario between the GUN and the Robotnik Empire.  So, here's how the Overlanders would fit into my take of the story:

For a start "Overlander" wouldn't be the name for the separate faction - it was first used as a "bogeyman" term for humans by the Mobians, when they ordered an isolationist policy for their islands to prevent being discovered (and subsequently massacred) by a human army large enough to survive even the power of the Chaos Emeralds (i.e. "Don't sail too far from shore, or the Overlanders will get you!").  As such, Overlander is used as a derogatory slur by Mobians against humans, such as Dr. Ivo Robotnik and his nephew Snively, or for the GUN when they try to field their own soldiers in an attempt to neutralize Robotnik while they had the opportunity.

As for the "separate faction" that basically serves the same role as Overlanders (something like Wastelanders, perhaps?), they will be mostly featured in areas in the old world that were overrun by the Robotnik Empire during the GUN's crushing route from the Eastern Hemisphere, such as Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and especially Africa.  These Wastelanders will have been composed of civilians who were fled their home cities when Robotnik's armies occupied them, with some being former GUN soldiers who were left behind by the GUN during its en-masse retreat.  As such, the Wastelanders hate both the Robotnik Empire, and the GUN in equal measure.  Visually, they're a cross between the Raiders of Fallout (www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCi1Bi… ), the Global Liberation Army from C&C: Generals (www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBmDFl… ), and assorted "soldiers gone rogue" factions for the abandoned GUN soldiers, such as Colonel Kurtz and Captain Colby from Apocalypse Now (www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kqFwV… ), and the "Damned 33rd" from Spec Ops: The Line (www.youtube.com/watch?v=as_Ya8… ), with some of the larger Wastelander factions becoming religious fanatics like The Brotherhood of Nod (www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrBj8M… ).

As for humans who have "regressed to Neanderthal levels of technology and intellect", I would save that for the sub-factions you call "Brutals" or "Mutates" in your Sonic MMO idea.

Not saying that I have a problem with it. In fact, I kinda like the fact that you took into account the fallout of the Xorda bombardment that would likely cause some mutations, and not always in a "clean" way like the Mobians or Megafauna/flora. XD
