Description Dedicated to: [link]

This is in truth mostly modern RAF tropical uniform. It is however almost identical to the uniforms worn in the boer war. The uniform i own however, is minute, even for me; id say the waist was 28 and the chest 34.

The cap is Royal Artillery; seems to go well with it. I was going to do some Other ranks Boer War images too but ran out of time.... i need to take pics in a real studio and not our landing...

Best place for this pattern is ebay, just search for tropical uniform in ebay. Lots of regiments in Iraq/Afghanistan wear these still, but only rarely.

Ebay mostly.

Here's a starter; [link]

Pith Helmet's are about Β£16
Sam Brown belts should be about Β£10-15
Boots will be difficult; get some 'uttees' and brown shoes instead.

Hope that helps!

Funny... I always thought it was red... you know, like in the Zulu war.

Nah, are you thinking of the Modern film "the four feathers" with Heath Ledger? They'd quit wearing red by 1881, though some artillerymen wore blue's in ww1!!!

AlexeiKazansky In reply to GeneralVyse [2009-06-14 05:52:17 +0000 UTC]

Actually I was thinking of the 1964 film Zulu with Stanley Baker.

And they wore blues in WW1? Like the French and the Americans?

Ah right, well the Zulu wars are 1879, the Boer war is 1902, both in south africa, between them, there's the war in the Sudan that raged for something like 20 years, but other than "the four feathers", no-one knows much about. Still it made Douglas Haig and Winston Churchill household names.

They wore an economy version of their dress uniforms, it was just a few men in the artillery. I've got one of the tunics in my gallery.

Well the boers didnt have an army per se. They had a state artillery which wore basic German Army artillery uniforms, but the average Boer wore everyday clothes, now you mention it, i could easily do some Boer stocks. Nice hat, jacket, shirt dusty trousers and a bandolier, easy!

The uniform is a modern RAF tropical uniform which are fairly cheap and easy to find. Alternatively, the USMC do something similar. Cheers for the comments, if you need any more info, i'm your man!

East Anglia

Can't think of anything over there except for Duxford. There is Milweb .net which might be good, or you can get a copy of "armourer" magazine which should have listings for east anglia militaria. I think there are plenty of reenactor units out there...

Ebay's great though, you've just got to be lucky. Unless you pay up for an item, 75% of the items you bid on you'll lose to higher bidders. It's disheartening, but the small victories are great.

I got a trenchoat worth Β£20 for Β£5. a tunic worth Β£50 for Β£20

How does the hat look from behind? We might never learn this universal mystery

And I agree that finding a better spot to take the photos would be nice. They work great for drawing reference like they are. But its so yellow they cant be used for much else (I only use stock for reference so it doesnt bother me tho )

Heh thanks! if you liked that, check out the rest of my gallery! It makes me look a little fat in these pictures, but honestly, its because the jacket is tiny. I have a 28" waist and this thing must be a 26" or something! LOL

If there's anything else uniform wise you'd like to see, let me know!
