I think that they're happy with David Matingly's artworks.

Having now read the entire series (and indeed I'm doing a thorough re-reading now, being about 1/3  through _Flag In Exile_ at this writing), I see some subtleties in the portraits of Elizabeth and Eloise that perhaps escaped me the first time I viewed this painting. Eloise is looking at the Manticoran Queen with an expression mixing consideration, calculation and doubt, no doubt reflecting her own doubts about whether Queen Elizabeth is capable of making peace. Elizabeth, in the meantime, has her back turned to the Havenite President; her expression seems at first glance to be serene, but when you look more closely, there's an underlying tension and her posture is ramrod-stiff (reflecting, I don't doubt, the great difficulty she has in agreeing to negotiate with Haven after all that she and Manticore have suffered at their hands - of course, neither of them knows yet who the *true* author of all their troubles is!).  As noted by several others, the bit with the tattered flags is excellent. The only real criticism I have is more in the nature of a nitpick; Ariel's fur is rather too white - he should, of course, be a cream/gray mixture.

Sometime I take some (small) liberty with the story.
With this illustration, I thought that a white cat was better than a grey/cream... So I did it white

One could argue the brilliant white light behind Ariel has washed out his fur color.  *shrug*

This piece is even more amazing now that I've, finally, read At All Costs and am starting on Mission of Honor.

Genkkis In reply to Sir-Catherine [2013-12-17 06:58:18 +0000 UTC]

To be honest, I took some liberty with Ariel.
I thought that the illustration would be more efficient with these colors.
It gives more importance to the queen's dress, flags, ...

Genkkis In reply to Saphroneth [2012-02-12 02:22:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. When you have a book in your hands, you can read the name of the nations in the background; Manticore, Haven, the solarian league and others. Each small star is a system where Maticore and heaven have had a battle. And the small "chains" symbolize the "holes of the worm" (don't know the english term)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Saphroneth In reply to Genkkis [2012-02-12 02:27:34 +0000 UTC]

It's "wormholes", or more correctly the points are wormholes - I suspect one term is based off the other. And I was certain that it was the wormhole network after I saw Manticore.

Wait, you selected which small star to put as well? That's brilliant! It really shows the intensity of the war, and that the alliance' main objective was Trevor's Star, and do I spy Hades?
Seriously, that's a brilliant idea.

I used the map that my publisher shows at the beginning of each novel, I guess that Mr. Weber had drawn it.

I don't remember if Hadès was on the map that I used (It was three years ago )Maybe...

Saphroneth In reply to Genkkis [2012-02-12 02:41:44 +0000 UTC]

It's way off to the top left of Haven, well away from the main axis of advance. (heh. Axis of advance for the Allies.) And that fits many of the criterion of Hades. It's even a place where there was a battle, which Honor refers to as the most audaciously stupid manoeuvre in recent history. Despite the fact that she did it and that it worked.

Genkkis In reply to Saphroneth [2012-02-12 02:54:33 +0000 UTC]

Hades, it's the planet-jail in "In enemy hands" no ?
I ask because I don't know if all the names are the same in English and in French

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Saphroneth In reply to Genkkis [2012-02-12 02:58:36 +0000 UTC]

In this case the name is the same. Hades is derived from Greek Mythology, so the only difference in French appears to be that French can accommodate the pronunciation easier with é instead of e. Other ones.. well, Nouveau Paris and a lot of the associated names (the defence stations Liberté, Fraternité and Egalité) are in French in the English versions of the books. More than that I do not know. I assume places with names like Split and Flax are changed.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Genkkis In reply to Saphroneth [2012-02-12 03:15:01 +0000 UTC]

Yes I know the greek mythology. I was a fan of mythology (greek, celtic, scandinavian, and others)
But I didn't know if it was exactly the same name in English because, sometimes, translaters have to take some liberty with a book to translate some specific expressions. Because of differences between cultural references and things like that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Saphroneth In reply to Genkkis [2012-02-12 03:17:11 +0000 UTC]

Of course, which is why I was happy to clarify. Hades in particular is steeped in mythology, with the moons also being named for hells. (Sheol, Niflheim and Tartarus if I recall correctly).

And why do I suspect you are glad to be able to support the Havenites with the most recent books?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Genkkis In reply to Saphroneth [2012-02-12 03:42:27 +0000 UTC]

Aaaaaah yeeeeees !!!! At last I will draw some "nice" Havenite. (And Pritchart, Theisman, Cachat, are some of my favourites characters) That was a little sad for me to see Havenite people only as a bad nation. Yes we (french people) are not perfect... But we can be cool too sometimes

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Saphroneth In reply to Genkkis [2012-02-12 03:58:54 +0000 UTC]

It's a side effect of the series "trainer wheels" being the French Revolutionary wars. If it helps, the only truly evil Havenites in my opinion are the SS ones, a few of the regular navy, Ransom and Saint-Just. (And of course a massive majority of the Legislaturists). McQueen was ambitious but not properly evil (yet, at least) and Robespierre (ahem, Rob S. Pierre) is heartbreaking. A good man, driven to terrible things, because it is the only choice he has.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Genkkis In reply to Saphroneth [2012-02-12 04:07:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the SS are the really bad guys. They are the symbol of the barbarity that lies in the heart of humans when they live in a tyranny... I was so happy when the Tepes was destroyed with Ransom on board
Even if it's difficult to admit Rob S Pierre is a good... reflection of the historical figure. The original one had good ideas, but the events pushed him in a wrong way.

BUT, even so, it's cool for me to draw cool Havenite people at last

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Saphroneth In reply to Genkkis [2012-02-12 04:12:28 +0000 UTC]

I felt genuinely sorry for Pierre in every one of his appearances after the death of Admiral Pierre. You can just see that he's a good man, driven to terrible things, partly because it's the only thing that will preserve his country, partly because if he shows weakness someone for whom it's a pleasure will take over, and partly, especially in the later ones, because he just doesn't know how to stop anymore. And he wants to, and he can't, and it's tearing him apart.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Genkkis In reply to Saphroneth [2012-02-12 04:16:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes, we see it in "In enemy hands". He would like to calm the SS and Ransom. But he can't, or he would be in a difficult position in his own government. He had trapped himself with his revolution/system.

Wow this is amazing X100
I love it. It's just too awesome for so many words.
I like the English cover for this book, I thought it was pretty cool, but I really wish Baen(they publish Honor Harrington in the USA,) would use your artwork. I seriously would love to own the book, even though I wouldn't be able to read it and already own the $27something hardcover Mission of Honor book (Mines all in one piece, XP they don't split up books).

I love your renditions of the Elizabeth and Eloise. They look so *real.* The treecat is always something can throw on the cover of an Honor Harrington book and it will look awesome and I still think the stars, swirling gasses and what looks like a hidden star map it the background.(Am I right?)

The flags are really cool, the way they swirl around the Queen; excuse me, Empress, and the President. The way both flags are torn and shredded also is really nice and I know the symbolism behind it without reading the other comments.

Not to poke or prod, but when are you going to put Honor Harrington and Thomas Theisman on a cover together? You know in the next book (A Rising Thunder) their going to be working together, or at least become good friends. I've seen a few different pictures and artwork of Thomas, none of it official. I would love to your version of him. (Well, knowing me, I'll love it anyways, but please? *Puppy dog eyes*)

Keep up the good work, as for I shall be stalking your progress carefully.

One of your (weird) American fans,
Admiral of the Green Caitlyn StarNight
P.S. Have a great day, weekend, morning and/or evening.

I've found it. The canadian bookstore where i saw some of my covers few month ago :
[link]
I think that you can ask for a book if they don't have it in their stock. Ask for Honor Harrington by the French publisher "l'atalante". But be careful, i do these covers only since 2009. On older books you'll have the other covers.

Well, that's all for this time.

See you soon

Wow ! That's a big comment !
Well, i'll try to answer to each subject...

First : Thank you for your congratulations and encouragements.

I know that you can order these books at a Canadian bookstore. I discovered it few months ago. I guess that they sell the French edition of Honor Harrington for the Quebec. But i think that you can order it for the US. I'll give you the adress of the website soon if you want.

The French publisher split each book of HH in two pieces because all their collections are smaller than yours. It would be strange (and ugly) to see a small size book with a very huge thickness... It would looks like a kind of... "paved"

I'm not sure to understand what you said about the star map so, sorry if my answer is irrelevant : yes there is a map behind each illustration.
If i remove the illustration, you would see a lot of stars and trajectories , and you would recognize the biggest stars as Manticore, Haven, and others...

About Honor and Thomas : well, i would like to draw them together (i really like Thomas Theisman).
But, as i said to someone few days ago, i wait for the right story ti represent something. So i need a book where they are importants and very presents in the story. Maybe for the next as you said... It would be cool because they are very important in this epic story.

About the good work :
Be sure that i'll do my best for each cover. I can't promise that you'll like everything. Maybe one day i'll be too tired to find the good idea, or i won't find any inspiration... No one is perfect...
BUT i try to do my best. Ever.
Because when i was younger i was in love with the covers of my books. I so much dreamed with illustrations and comics.
Each time, a good illustration opened a gate in my young mind to travel, to live big adventures and to discover worlds... It was so cool to discover my favourite character/spaceship/castel or anything else in a cover
And it was cool too, to looked at the cover when the book is over. I discovered some small details about the story... And so on...

When i draw i try to make you(all the readers) dream like me.

These days i work on the second cover for "Mission of Honor", the first of "Crown of slaves" and "On Basilik station"...

So you'll have more stuff to see soon

Have a nice day and thank you for your attention and your opinions.

Hello,

i'm happy that you like this one.

Like i said to Tiisiphone, i want to draw some important characters that we don't see on other covers. This time it was a good opportunity to show the Queen and the President.

On the next? Mmm i try to do something without anyone
I hope that i'll manage to do something cool even if i won't show any heroes of the story.

But one thing is sure, i'll draw some covers with Honor Harrington in the furure because... it's HER story after all
But i wait a story where she have an important role ("in enemy hands" for example).

If you want to see the staff of Manpower, take a look at my two covers for "Storm from the shadows".
On the fisrt book you can see Isabel Bardasano (tatoo and piercing) and Michelle Henke.
And on the second book you can see Albrecht Deitweiler and Anisimovna, and Albrecht(yes again) and his sons.

See you soon for your opinion about the second cover
