Description
As I promised to some of the people here, I'm releasing the first tutorial here. This is the tutorial for how to do soft cell shading on Photoshop, based on my experience.
The version of Photoshop used in the tutorial is 6. If you use later versions, names of tools/modes and/or allocation of shortcut keys might be different.
I'm working on Windows, so if you use Mac please change these notations as: Ctrl to Command, Alt to Option.
I just hope it helps you.

Wow! o_O I found my old tablet today and thought about trying my hands on digital colouring again (since it was years since I tried it and I never really learned it then anyway). I tried a bit and of course it sucked. But after reading your tutorial I feel that I could perhaps actually do this.
Thank you for a great tutorial!

what i do is scan it, then increase the contrast. it worked wonders for me and my pencil wasn't even that dark. Give it a try.

Awsome. That was quite helpful lol.
Makes me feel silly that all this time I never thought of using the lasoo or magic wand. -.-' haha. I didn't know that much about grouped layers though, this will probably help a lot ^^ Thanks.

Thank you so much, this tutorial is amazing, but unfortunately it's 5:49 in the morning here and i can't read it so thouroughly, what i really got out of this was finally understanding how the f the layer's work, so thank you so much! But i still have 2 questions, why do you keep the basecolor layer under the lineart layer and also what exactly is (soft cel shading), when i think of cel shading, what comes to mind is that type of shading used for video games made with programs i.e. jax and daxter'ish (so basically the cel part is throwing me off)

This was amazing!, unfortunately it's 5:49 in the morning so i couldn't go to in depth with this but i will be sure to come back later, i don't have photoshop but i was glad that i used this to finally understand how the f those layers work!!!!, they have confused me so much, thank you, but is there any specific reason that the base color layer is below the lineart layer at the top.

Discarbia In reply to WolfyGalViolet [2011-06-12 19:50:15 +0000 UTC]
it do not look like this is a person that have time to answear questions, so i dont know why i do this.. but im just so bored !
i would not use paint becouse it have no layers and no blure , so what i would have done (and did ) it to either download gimp (for free and legal ) or download paint tool sai (for free but not legal )
sai it the best i ever have had and i have tried : gimp, Mangastudio 4, photoshop elements, and sai so for me its the best of the best
and its jst to watch a few tutorals on youtube, and your ready to draw like a master
