But that is like real life..... If someone is not bi, and strictly hetero, then they are. No amount of moaning (wink) or persuading would change their mind. It gets me when people get peeved over something like that.

Did you play as a female mage in DAO?  Cause you talk to him there and he's in love with your Amell.  Then when you save him in the tower, that scene is extended as he confesses the demons have been torturing him with images of her.  He's angry bitter, twisted.  Then in DA2 you see he's a bit better, still charming, and still a minor roll, but even so at the end he stands with you.

He has had amazing development over the years, and for some - even though his roll has been small - we've always wanted a happy ending for the poor templar that seems to have been through so much.  Doesn't hurt that he's easy on the eye of course  

Sure he might have been a minor character, but we just love seeing that he's developed and come so far from that young, bumbling templar with a crush on your mage.  Trust me, Twilight and sparkling vampires has NOTHING to do with it.

I can only speak for myself of course, but I've neither read the Twilight books nor seen the movies, so that definitely has nothing to do with it.
Cullen is one of the few characters that appears in all three main Dragon Age games, and has tremendous development over the decade that takes place between the Origins and Inquisition. I can't say much more than that without spoiler-ing one thing or another. I never found any fault with his performance (neither character's actions, which, though I didn't always agree with, seemed appropriate for him, nor voice acting). As far as lackluster appearance... well, there's something to be said for the ramen-noodle hair 'shops of him. He is right around 30 years old, so I guess you could imagine he's finally grown into his own.

I see... I'm sure you may have noticed this but he was popular even before DA:2 was released. In the epilogue of DA he ends up slaughtering mages or something like that. But DA2 gave him a (very awesome, in so many ways) role as a true Templar. I keep thinking that, that only happened because fans loved him enough; his role in DA was sort of like a nutty doomsayer after all. Like that one outside Lothering Chantry.
Still, your reason is good.
To be honest, after how he stood by Hawke against Meredith i got a whole lot of respect for the guy too!

If you have a female mage origin (either as human or elf) you see a much sweeter face of him. He is present on your hard quest to become a mage on your full right, the very quest that can have you being killed by templars if it goes wrong. Later he tells you that he would have know what to do if he would have to take you down. And them, you reach him on broken circle and you find the sweet guy who stuttered every time you talked at him, completly defeated, almost mad by the rage and impotence of have to see his friends being murdered, claiming that you are the only thing he has ever wished, and that makes him sick that demons use you to torture him. Is sad, and he deserved a better ending that his love being with other or sacrificing herself to slay the archdemon.

The mage killing thing was a rumor. In the witch hunt dlc it's said he was sent to a chantry to level out due to the emotional scars of the circle tower. Then sent to Kirkwall.

I haven't gone down the Solas romance path yet... maybe if I do another run. I am particularly fond of the early game tongue duel.

He's a hard one to romance, it takes a long time, p much the expanse of the game and will only romance a female elf inquisitor. But its actually a lot of fun. I've only romance Dorian before him, so I'm slowly replaying the game and making my way up the list!

I think the developers were aware of that furry collar's appeal.  Hard to believe Cullen wasn't an original romance option.

Yeah, Solas was the other "last minute" add-on. (I'm not sure exactly how "last minute" it was, though.) Given people's reactions, they've done a good job with that one too.
