Decided to "finish" this earlier sketch:

Still kind of surreal, but that's how life feels anyway...

I like how everything is in grey-scale except for the tablet, it's a powerful way to show how an artist pours their soul into their work. There is this huge mass of grey that I interpreted as "raw material" that the artist will process into art through this small orange rectangle. I like it
I see the sketch picture as more scary, because it's less detailed and therefore it leaves more to the imagination ^^

Also true to form for most of us in the design world. Dark, after hours, but we just can't leave until it's perfect!... or because some nasty deadline is breathing down our knecks!

Brilliant work. I think it perfectly reflects a lot of modern artists and writers who find inspiration and focus in seclusion and surrounding themselves with "their world." I share your sense of the surreal as this, honestly, reflects my own life outside of what's perceived as the social norm. Although, mine does not feel as gloomy.

I'm glad to see your passion for art and putting your soul into it hasn't been entirely sucked away by the con machine. Yes, you're making money off your work, but I miss the powerful emotions in your art. Things like this make me smile, when they probably should do the opposite. *hugs*

ghostfire In reply to elizastrange [2011-10-25 05:33:31 +0000 UTC]

Making art into business is really exhausting. Not just the conventions themselves, but always having to be on the edge to get into them, always having to juggle expenses, always having to do reams of paperwork for cons and for taxes and such... I wish I could do more art for art's sake lately.

elizastrange In reply to ghostfire [2011-10-25 11:13:56 +0000 UTC]

I wish you could too. I'm still teetering on the idea of selling art to make ends meet, but I don't think I'd opt for the route you went for. Cons and their attendees are too mercurial for my tastes. I wouldn't want to keep up with everything. I'd eventually come to hate it, like you seem to. My personal policy has always been to ensure my art doesn't become a chore. Part of the reason why I'd rather attempt to make paintings my forte in the selling field and keep my handdrawn stuff for my own enjoyment. I'll never expose Paradox to the tender mercies of the greater public since it's still faaaaar too personal to do so.

I'm sure you do this already, but do try to do at least one thing for yourself between all of the commerical mess. Draw Teresa. I miss seeing her in your galleries.
