i guess most artists are doomed to be packrats and somewhat unorganized

It's a Wacom Cintiq (small). Before I got this one about a year and a half ago, I was using the Wacom Intuos 3, and before that, the Wacom Graphire 1. Basically I've been using Wacom's tablets for twelve years.
