Description

Please make sure to carefully read and follow the important information. Remember, failing to do so Β may result in both parties losing their PayPal accounts!

So in the past I've encountered many commissioners who don't know how to send money via PayPal, or send the payment incorrectly and end up risking both of our accounts.. I made this small tutorial to add to my commissions journal in hopes of preventing this from happening.Β

I tried making it very simple for those who are new to PayPal or don't know how to send money using PayPal. I hope it helps!

Feel free to add this to your journal/commission information to avoid your account being at risk.

I am not extremely educated on how PayPal works. I will try to answer any questions I can, however.

Will it send you a notification of whoever sent the money? Like their username or email?

If you have PayPal as an app on your phone, a push message will appear as: "FULLNAME SURNAME" has sent you $xx
PayPal will also send you an email titled: "You've got money" (found under updates in Gmail) - it'll show the transaction with the name, money, (note if any) and how much fee there has been taken.
Also the overview on your account will show name, email, status, note and money.

All with no username. That's why adding it as a note to the money is a great idea.Β  Β

Like how to send the payment?
The person your commissioning gives you their Email associated with their PayPal account and that's how you send it.

Banned?? Omg why XDD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GhostlyHarmony In reply to Pan-cakuu [2015-09-20 23:42:17 +0000 UTC]

I've listed a couple reasons.

First, sending a commission payment as a gift is scamming and stealing money from PayPal. They make their money off the small fees we pay when we receive money (since the one who sends the payment doesn't pay any fees anyway). So I can understand PayPal banning accounts who are stealing money from them. And they don't only ban them, in their terms of service they could also fine them for $2,500. So always avoid sending commissions as gifts.Β

Second, if you send a payment and include your address, PayPal will expect the person to physically send something to your house. I've been in trouble with someone including their address when they sent money to me. It's a bit annoying to have to deal with.

And lastly, PayPal associates art sites with porn. I can only imagine how many people bought NSFW commissions on FurAffinity or Inkbunny and in the note wrote every obnoxious and outrageous detail they could possibly write. PayPal isn't fond of the idea that people are using their site to buy smut, and since some smut is against the law, like child pornography for example, if they catch it they ban it. And now, if you mention any art site, they play it safe and assume it's smut to avoid any legal matters. As they say, one bad apple spoils the bunch.

I hope this clears it up!

I would be grateful if you did. I would encourage readers to pass the word on too.
The more people who know how to properly pay for commissions, the less trouble us artists will have and the less PayPal accounts shut down. ;-;

This is how I've always done it, unfortunately I have encountered a few artists who ask you to send it using the friends and family option though just so they can avoid the fee...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GhostlyHarmony In reply to William-David-Afton [2015-08-16 17:10:52 +0000 UTC]

It's the legit way.Β
By sending it using the friends and family option you are basically scamming PayPal out of money. Which is stealing. Hopefully this enlightens some artists who require the friends and family payments. It can get you a big ass fine and your account frozen. And helps those who are unaware of the fact keep their accounts safe

GemmaDex In reply to GhostlyHarmony [2018-08-29 17:10:30 +0000 UTC]

Sorry to bother you, can you please tell me how much is the fee? ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GhostlyHarmony In reply to GemmaDex [2018-08-30 13:49:36 +0000 UTC]

I believe it is percent based. It usually adds up to $1 or so per commission.

GemmaDex In reply to GhostlyHarmony [2018-08-30 20:43:34 +0000 UTC]

William-David-Afton In reply to GhostlyHarmony [2015-08-16 17:23:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I now avoid artists who insist on using the friends and family option, not going to risk my account just because someone wants to avoid a fee (that I then have to pay).
I tried to tell an artist this but I was just ignored especially when someone else decided to butt in and tell them that paypal aren't likely to do anything about it...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GhostlyHarmony In reply to William-David-Afton [2015-08-16 18:02:31 +0000 UTC]

That's for the best. I don't mind losing a few bucks compared to the whooping $2,500 and up fine if you're caught.

If the artist ignored you then that's their problem. Plus, the use of the word "likely" doesn't really fight a good argument, haha,

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

William-David-Afton In reply to GhostlyHarmony [2015-08-16 20:16:14 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, the fee isn't a huge amount in the end.

Yeah guess so, just means I won't buy anything from them... pity since they are a good artist but oh well and yeah it was a crappy counter argument to what I said, if paypal does something about their misuse of the site then it's their own fault.
