Description
I've definitely had a bit of a "Proudly South African" vibe going of late, which in part leads to this latest piece. The original inspiration though was a recent trip to a game lodge called Mabula which is situated two-and-a-half hour's drive north of Joburg, where we were visited on one of the days by a rather unique looking local antelope, known as a Nyala . A definite loner, we only saw him once on the trip, but he had enough personality to inspire me to create a Nyala-esque character.
I'd also been planning for a while to create a Springbok character as part of my desire to introduce more of South Africa into my art... this led to these two locals.
The Springbok has the character of an isiZulu girl named Lungile, the Nyala is an Afrikaans guy by the name of Zander.
I could go into their biographies now, but this description is already long enough... I'll post separate bio's for them at a later stage, but here's a quick lesson on their names:
Name meanings:
Lungile (Loo-n-ghee-leh): The Good One
Zander (Zah-n-der): Protector
Surname pronounciation:
Sigege (See-geh-geh)
Cilliers (Silly-ehrs)
Background images:
The image on the left is of one of the best-known landmarks in Joburg - The Nelson Mandela Bridge.
The image on the right is a pic I took of scenery at Mabula Game Lodge.
Also, for locals checking this out, kudos if you recognised the Love Jozi shirt/logo!

Since when is "z" an afrikaans letter? Great anthros, though.

Not overly prominent sure, but Zander still fits as a name (there's a Zander Nel from the Free State on Facebook for example)... besides, what about 'Zef' culture?
Shot for the watch dude

Thanks, yeah the idea for the fingers came from wanting to emulate the look of the nyala's black hooves 8]

I love their legs!
Very cute, her chin looks a little far out though, like she has a serious underbite?
Very original characters

Thanks fer the comment KCA, I was hoping for a few from the local mense!
Hehe, don't worry 'bout the chin, it's part of my approach of trying to exaggerate facial features to enhance expressions... it won't look like that when she's not grinning cheekily 8]
Glad you like the characters, expect to see more of 'em down the line!
