Description
Now I feel the pain of people who had to reconstruct the first dinosaurs... TOOK SO MUCH TIME.Anyway, this is for the amazing spec evo challenge #3 which in where I had to reconstruct an extinct alien. And this is what I came up with!
This amazing alien, Glossastomadipodas Dromeas, also known as the "tongue toothed biped", is an enigma. What seems to be tentacles in its mouth are actually heavily specialised teeth, which are used to lure and grab its main prey, being a mollusc like creature known as a Katalakely (tentacled shell).
Katalakely have incredibly sensitive tentacles that come out of holes in their shells. These "tentacles" are used as both sensors, limbs, and even courtship devices. They wander aimlessly across the bottom of rivers, hoping to find potential prey. If they do sense prey, they stop moving, and they wave there tentacles around, hoping that they are able attract the prey item. This way of hunting is very similar to that of snapping turtles on earth, although it is a bit more versatile. Katalakely are actually quite big, as they are around the same size of a human head.
The main predator of these shelled organisms is a large predator known as 'glossastomadipodas dromeas'. Like mentioned above, the tentacles in their mouth are intact modified teeth, which are used to lure in there main prey item, katalakely. This is very interesting, as their prey lures in its prey with tentacles, and the predator of that animal also uses "tentacles" to capture prey. Glossastomadipodas dromeas, whilst being a semi aquatic animal, has unusually long legs. This is actually a trait that was actually intended for a noter purpose. These creatures were originally predatory sprinters that sprang down helpless prey on land, and they were excellent in their role. However this was not going to last long. A huge meteor shower rained down on the planet, and the prey of this highly specialised predator went extinct. Those individuals that could not adapt went extinct. But the resourceful individuals went down a different path. An aquatic path. It seems that this animal was bound to became an oceanic predator, but it went extinct before it could accomplish that feat. One remnant of its sprinter lifestyle is its 22 eyes. These were used to spot prey in the dark, as the planet is on is always covered in extensive clouds, which has forced most species to adapt. Its eyes are now used to see in murky water, where its prey is found. These eyes are incredibly well developed, with each eye having around the same vision as that off an eagle. This animal is also incredibly large, with the holotype specimen being around 6.8m.
I hope you guys like this.
