I come across this a lot, people do not seem to realize that simple image/bg/color/fonts swaps on someone else's skin is art theft. Their code is their work. You can reference their code, but copying line by line and slightly altering it does not make it yours. It's their layout, their hard work. Sure, it's as much hard work to dig through someone's code to alter it. At that point, you might as well do it yourself. Hopefully, this tutorial can display how easy it is to create one from scratch, rather than backwards engineering someone else's code. If you still feel you simply must take other's hard work, do not redistribute it claiming as your own work. When you do that, that makes it theft.

If you would like someone to design a skin just like theirs with your images, then try two things, 1) Ask Permission! 2) Ask or commission them to do it for you. If they said no, then do it yourself.

Don't know CSS? There are a ton of walkthroughs, guides and tutorials all over the place, here's a good place to start: [link]

Just a note to any one who comments or faves or watches me, I'm one of those people who actually looks at the profile before I say "thanks, bye". I like to leave thoughtful comments whenever I can or reciprocate for a fav or comment. I often look at the galleries. If I find stolen art, I report it. So if you steal, and have visited me, really, don't bother commenting, you'll only get yourself in trouble.

Here is the free skin (free to use, not to alter and redistribute) used in this tutorial:

What is the size required to create the thumb design?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gillianivyart In reply to riccassley [2012-02-28 23:38:37 +0000 UTC]

Well, that can be just about any. I think the thumbs max size is around 150px. Not sure. It's a matter of padding and playing with them, since different thumbs will display differently. I usually add in a cancel code, which makes the thumb blank. For emotes, etc. I use as it's easy to remember.

is this possible to do with my own art or would i hav to do it a different way?

gillianivyart In reply to Jade-Stardust [2010-11-15 00:28:23 +0000 UTC]

Of course. The piece in this tutorial was hand drawn, scanned and such. It was designed with a journal skin in mind. So I drew it in parts, one for the header, and another for the bg and another for the thumbs. Of course, you can do it with just one image. Depending upon yur layout and such.

If ever you feel like asking me some CSS questions, feel free, just note me. I'm joining the #eCSSercise group for CSS mentoring, it's not started yet, but there should be a lot of CSS help in that group.

Really? I'd been thinking of writing more tuts, but unsure of how to explain thingss sometimes. Though I do read a lot of tuts, so know how to structure it. Haha. I was trying to be simple and straightforward. Which is hard for me, I tend to over explain things... Thanks!

yep (:

i have been trying to make this into a journal [link] but now i know you need to make separate things and how to do all the other stuff you need to do. lol xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gillianivyart In reply to Little-Hercy [2010-11-06 07:06:58 +0000 UTC]

It can be done all as one image, though it would be less flexible. I find separating into the parts to be the easiest in most cases. That way you can sort of layer your images on top of each other and have them retain their form when you have more or less text.

There's a new group coming out (still under works) for CSS mentoring. Keep a watch on

I'm starting to wish a) we could track installs or b) for an option to prevent people from seeing the CSS itself once they've used it. Aaaargh!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gillianivyart In reply to neurotype-on-discord [2010-11-06 06:20:00 +0000 UTC]

a) would be nice, but don't think b) would really be possible. And the "How to Share" part is inefficient for protecting the deviation, though it does notify the person that they're modding someone else's code and DA won't approve of them submitting it. But maybe they don't realize it says "Don't Steal" because it doesn't actually say that. Maybe they need an anti-piracy banner.

Yeah...but I'm going to fantasize anyway

People seem to assume that if it's just for personal use, they can do whatever they want...not true unless the artist says so, guys!

gillianivyart In reply to neurotype-on-discord [2010-11-06 07:02:41 +0000 UTC]

Seems most people don't even read the artists comments, too. Some artists may give permissions or strictly forbid. Though I do think that only once they publicly share something is it considered stealing, not sure about altering for personal usage. Like if people made a wallpaper for themselves out of a copyrighted image, so long as they do not redistribute, I think it is within their rights to be able to use? Personal use would be a lot harder to prosecute.

neurotype-on-discord In reply to gillianivyart [2010-11-06 16:41:17 +0000 UTC]

Right--but if it's based on something, they're still expected to credit. I don't think it's too big of a deal if someone modifies something I've made, as long as they acknowledge the source.

Artist comments, guys. Not that hard.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gillianivyart In reply to neurotype-on-discord [2010-11-06 16:53:36 +0000 UTC]

Yup, that'd be the polite thing to do. Asking permissions, giving a nod to the artist, that's all most artists want, right? If they're selling their skins, like you do yours, I know you'd probably be piffed if someone took your shiny and recolored it then posted without crediting you, especially all the hard work you put into that one.

Personally, I wouldn't mind minor alterations to my stuff, though not really image editing... But definitely not redistributing without even requesting permission.

neurotype-on-discord In reply to gillianivyart [2010-11-07 02:08:45 +0000 UTC]

Pretty much! It's weird that people don't treat this kind of thing like they do paintings...intellectual property ftw. (Truthfully, I wouldn't mind if someone chose to change the colors, as long as it was only for themselves and I got the credit for the original.)

Yeah.... I'm fine with image replacement, though, as my drawing skills definitely need work.

barberioX [2010-11-05 14:57:47 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, a good and necessary message. I have made my very first journalskin some weeks before. I would be angry too, if someone changes the colors and tells it his/hers. But actually your tutorial doesn't really tell "How to make your own skin without stealing someone elses code". It just tells: "Don't steal the code" and shows some basic ways how a skin could be created. But the main thing (coding it) isn't explained. And this wouldn't be possible, as books are filled with that topic.
The tutorial itself is good, but aims at the wrong persons. Someone who is already able to code it (you said "enter your code"), wouldn't steal it.
So the right message would be "Don't stel! - Learn how to code!"
I hope you don't mind if I told freely what I think. This isn't meant to be as an offense in any way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gillianivyart In reply to barberioX [2010-11-06 06:15:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I didn't explain the actual coding process, as there's tons of those all over DA, and I do point to a few of them that have helped me learn or that I reference to. Actually, a lot of people who are able to code go ahead and take other's code. In order to alter someone's code, you need a working knowledge of how the code works.

The main problem is, the people who steal it do not realize they're stealing. But if you copy & pasted a picture, they'd know it was art theft. This tutorial was aimed to enlighten people on the difference between theft and using another's work as reference.

Thanks for your comment. I'm not offended at anything you said. But yeah, my tutorial is just "Don't steal, learn how to code!"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

barberioX In reply to gillianivyart [2010-11-06 08:01:12 +0000 UTC]

That's true. People who can code, take other available code and alter it. I think that shouldn't be forbidden (if the code is rewritten and not just copied and pasted as you mentioned in you tutorial).

But we should consider the fact that none of us developed the CSS code. We all use a basic code from someone else. Just look at different hacks for CSS (eg. Box Hack, or specific IE hacks). The question is: do you create something new with the code of someone else, or do you just change the bg color and some fonts?

When I get in touch with CSS the first times, I was happy to use some code snippets of other artists. I changed them, renamed some classes, modified the code and so on - to get the design which I had in mind. But IF we use other code (as I did on my journal skin -> thumbs shadows), we HAVE TO get permission unless we don't change it and create something new.

So yes - you are absolutely right.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

gillianivyart In reply to barberioX [2010-11-06 09:47:48 +0000 UTC]

Exactly ;D Sure, it's fine to learn from snippets and such, but the moment you redistribute, you have to make it your own work. Or get permissions and give credits, yada. I made this mostly because of a recent incident which the person really didn't seem to get that their work was not a collaboration, the original artist expressly denied permission. And I have this thing about art theft. Like a pet peeve, I guess. If I stumble across some, I'm obliged to report it.

barberioX In reply to gillianivyart [2010-11-06 11:18:00 +0000 UTC]

I absolutely agree. My problem is, that I don't notice most art thefts.
So I reported only a few. But in general I hate that too.
I have found some of my skins ported to another app, without being asked.

Have a nice day Gillian.
