Description
Well...Just sayin'.
EDIT:
I'd like to clarify a few things...
First of all
Yes I understand that PruCan couple be either canon or non-canon, considering the lack of historical background, but also the blog Prussia made about maple syrup. Please take into account, my definition of a crack pairing is:
Not historically accurate, nor backed by the show.
For example:
1. USUK is both historically accurate (colonization, American Revolution, etc) and backed by the show.
2. England-India is historically accurate ("Jewel of the British Empire," the 'soul force' non-violent rebellions) though not portrayed in the show.
3. Greece-Japan is not exactly historically accurate, though it is shown in the anime quite a few times.
Pairings that don't fit this criteria, I see as crack pairings, regardless of how popular they really are. PruCan and Turkey-Ukraine are just two examples of pairings I see as crack, though they have a wide fanbase. I could have picked any pairing:
Iceland-Seychelles. Australia-Chile. Italy-India. Argentina-Germany.
See what I mean?
Second of all
Taking into account the population of the world today which rests snugly near 7 billion, there is a pretty good chance somewhere in the world, there is a happy Turkish-Ukrainian or Canadian-German or whatever else couple. Therefore, any of these pairings could be possible, and to someone writing an AU modern story, it would be inaccurate to claim it isn't plausible.
Third of all
I don't know what Himaruya's intention in creating Hetalia was; whether he intended it to be racist or not is unknown to me.
However, the Hetalia fanbase is one of the most tolerant and accepting I have ever met. Fans of this show can see the good in all cultures, regardless of their history or their stereotypes, because it prompts them to learn more about different cultures and languages and nationalities.
I even became a history major, partly because I wanted to learn more about the cultures Hetalia introduced to me.
Also, since a lot of pairings in Hetalia (canon, and crack) have a wide range of sexualities and genders - boyboy, girlgirl, boygirl, Nyotalia - Hetalia fans are also in general very accepting of different sexual and gender identities.
This is a wonderful thing; Hetalia fans have taken a huge step in accepting love unconditionally and seeing past the differences of nationalities to seek peaceful relationships with all countries.
Now my problem is
With such an accepting community, how can any pairing be ostracized by that? Yes, they may be un-historical, but does that mean they aren't possible today? Yes, they may be "just fictional characters" but are they not based on real countries and real people? And yes, the stereotype may not be true for all people, but all stereotypes have to have some truth to them, otherwise, they wouldn't exist, right?
For example - I'm a Russian born, living in America. I may not be a hard-core vodka drinker, but I happen to love burgers.
A LOT. More than I should...
Also, since the stereotypes don't apply to every single person in a country's population, whose to say there isn't an Australian that could move to Denmark and fall in love? Or A Mexican that could decide to get married in South Korea?
If Hetalians stand for unconditional love, and acceptance of all cultures (which I believe they do) how can they turn around and say a certain pairing shouldn't be portrayed artistically on dA because it's "not canon?"
If you don't like a certain pairing, that is perfectly fine. But please don't complain that it is "spamming all over dA" and that it "shouldn't be on here" because it's not canon.
Because in the REAL WORLD - ALL pairings are canon.

I have nothing against crack pairings, it's just that I usually ship pairings that have historical background or at least a lot of canon background.
I can like a crack ship if I think their personalities mesh well together.
Also, I don't think Turkraine is crack because I heard that they have a lot of history and such....

Well said!
While I enjoy canon pairings, I also love canon x oc. I only ship characters for personality and how they act and personalities that work for each other, not for historical reasons. I ship PruBela, not only for their historical relationships, but also how their ownΒ personalities can work wellΒ with one another. PrussiaΒ needs someone who can teach him how to man up, and I think Belarus isΒ right forΒ him.Β
PruBela for the win!

(I like Nyotalia! and love the female characters in Hetalia -Except for Seychelles... Don't kill me...- but people always say: "You like Belarus? EW. NO. SHE'S LIKE. SUCH A BITCH!11!" I never understood why people hated the female characters...)

It's not just the Revolution that makes USUK canon, there are dozens of scenes that show USUK flirting and obvious sexual tension. You must be blind not to see it. Just like you must be blind not to see the italy/germany flirting.
Obviously on the show Canada and Cuba flirt and so Cuba/Canada are canon. For some reason canadian fans of hetalia don't want to accept cuba and canada as a canon pairing. But it is clearly in the show.
Why don't Canadians want to embrace it? are Canadians racist because they don't want to be paired with Cuba??
π: 0 β©: 3
LyyraMoonstone In reply to lostalex82 [2013-10-24 21:30:04 +0000 UTC]
I think it's mostly 'cause Cuba isn't all kawaii like pretty much every other character. I personally don't care for the ship and see them more as friends than anything else.Β
Plus if you look at what happened between Cuba and Canada, the only reason Canada continued trading with them was because our prime minister of the time didn't like the U.S president an' was pretty much sticking him the middle finger. The relationship still wasn't cozy though, the Canadian government often treated them with the cold shoulder and reminded them dozens of times that Canada would always put the U.S before Cuba. Then there was the fact that the majority of Canadians didn't like what the prime minister had done, and they represent the country a bit more than the government does. The U.S media blew it up as some sort of huge Canadian betrayal though, they weren't interested in what we were trying to tell them.

Obvious sexual tension? Flirty? And just when I thought there was nothing wrong with my retina.
Fangirls need to realize that not every situation between England and America can be blindly interpreted as 'obvious sexual tension'. There IS no sexual tension between any country, in fact. The only exception is when Greece ended up in Japan's bed, and even that seems to be pretty far-fetched. I personally see England as a platonically-loving caretaker to America, no matter how much he denies their relationship.
And yes, CuCan is a very under-rated pairing. I don't really get the psychology of those fangirls who claim to hate this pairing. Not that I'm saying it's the hottest pairing of the year, but it does get a lot of hate. Is it because they think a hot guy should be paired with an equally hot, Caucasian guy? I have seen Canadians who has absolutely nothing against Canada pairings. Though I wouldn't say it is canon actually.

personally, i prefer things to make sense in canon. If it's not part of canon in the SHOW then don't call it hetalia. You can do whatever you like, but don't call it Hetalia if it ain't canon.

I'm one of those girls who keep liking pairings that aren't very known or liked, and that's a little sad to me, though I can't make other people like what I like, can I? For example, at the moment, I like Taiwan x Vietnam, Belgium x Belarus, Hungary x Lichtenstein and Monaco x Seychelles, and those characters aren't even LIKED by most fans, just because they dare have vaginas. Seriously, I've come across several fangirls who "hate [insert female character] but love their Nyotalia counterpart". I actually tend to like the female Nyotalias more than the regulars, just because of the fact that I like drawing girls more than I like drawing boys. But that's just me...
But people accept me because I like more "canon" pairings as well, like FrUK... It's not my favourite, but it's one of the few pairings I like in any gender. Especially Britain x Nyo!France, because it's just adorable to me. Yeah, I'll stop talking now...
π: 0 β©: 1
Ginger-Curls In reply to HoneyDucess [2012-12-02 20:59:58 +0000 UTC]
I agree! I do think the female characters (whether Nyotalia or canon) don't get enough love. It's more fun to draw the girls - you can do a lot more with their clothes!
Personally, one of my favorite types of pairings to experiment with is taking a general (i.e. canon or just well-liked) pairing like Spamano or FrUK or even USUK and bending one of the characters... it adds a whole new dimension to the pairing!

HoneyDucess In reply to Ginger-Curls [2012-12-02 21:55:22 +0000 UTC]
Is that a TARDIS I spy on your whatever it's called -profile picture? If so, you are awesome, seriously.
Yes, that's a whole lot of fun, isn't it? And, since I cosplay, I like the females for that reason as well. Binders hurt, so it's just easier cosplaying as a girl. I'm planning on cosplaying Monaco, for example, because we look creepily alike. Seriously. But it's fun to switch it around with the genders of any pairings. There are even some I only like if one of them has been bent. Ameripan is an example of just that for me. Yeah, I'm complicated with my shipping...
Oh, but one thing that annoy me about Nyotalia is when people pair, for example, Italy with Nyo!Italy, because to me, that's like him falling in love with himself... And all the female fandubs of character songs. I'm seriously tempted to trap-sing male versions of the few female character songs, just because there aren't any. I'll just get myself a mic, then they will see. Everyone will see~!

Why yes it is! Fellow Whovians unite!!
It is! I don't normally cosplay girls because I just don't like dressing girly in general, but I have considered, if I have time and money, making a Victorian!Fem-England cosplay - complete with lace, corset, satin, the works. Mainly because I like sewing ridiculously complicated things and making my life a living hell for three months until I finish the damn costume...
But yes! Playing with gender bend roles is fun! I do agree with you about pairing a character with their Nyo!counterpart. To me, they are sort of the same person, so if someone were to use both parts in a fic or something, they would most closely be brother and sister.

I'll admit that I haven't watched very much Doctor Who; they don't show it on TV here in Sweden, so I have to rely on finding it online, and I can't find any good videos. Still, I'm just terrified by the weeping angels. Yeah, there are many statues where I live, as long as you know where to look, so I've had paranoid moments over them. Heh...
I seriously want to hug you right now, and at the same time be upset because I didn't think of that cosplay; because that sounds seriously awesome, apart from the corset, as those things just look painful...
I dunno, I like wearing pretty dresses, so female characters are a lot of fun for me, but there are males I'd like to cosplay as as well, but without a frickin' binder, seriously.
What do you think of the 2P's, then? I, for one, like playing around with the fact that they don't have a given personality, and that I can basically decide on personailites for them on my own. And one of those headcanons of mine has made me want to cosplay 2P!Japan in any form some day, just because I believe him to be kind of 'Alois Trancy', if you understand by that description...

If you look up watch-series.eu, you should be able to find the complete (new) series of Doctor Who~ Putlocker links are the best. [link]
Oh yes, the Weeping Angels are one of the WORST. D: There's a statue on the quad of my university and every time I walk past it... D:
XD Yeah, the corset is something that I am not looking forward to, but I don't normally mind binders (having a small chest has perks~) and I do want to keep it as accurate as possible.
I personally don't like the 2P characters at all. Since Hetalia is all about making characters that represent certain countries, so if you make a character that is the complete opposite of that, it kind of defeats the purpose. I like Hetalia for the stereotypical jokes and the history, both of which can't be portrayed by the 2P characters, in my opinion.

AliceCrystalRose [2012-12-01 07:40:32 +0000 UTC]
The American Revolution is not meant to be some moment that proves that USUK is canon. Damnit. I get sick every time someone says so.
And I thought Hetalia was historically inaccurate? Nothing except a few aspects could be counted as correct events which actually happened.
AND NO. I REFUSE to believe in England/India. During Pre-Colonization, it could have happened because by then almost every European country wanted to establish trade with India so that they could grab all its spices and riches (which would then make India x Portugal/Netherlands/England/Denmark/France canon) but after Briton set up the east India company, it gained a lot of revulsion from the locals because the Britons treated them badly and provided no security for their livelihoods which were being suppressed by the company. Also before Ahimsa (the 'soul-force' non-violent rebellions) there were a lot of bloody fights, like the Battle of Plassey, and, dare I say it, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. And not all leaders were like Mahatma Gandhi who believed in Non-violence. This is coming from a Hetalian who has a well-researched history teacher as a Grandmother who is also Indian.
But if the fans ship it simply because their personalities rather mix well together and not by claiming "IT'S HISTORICALLY CANON!11!!", very well, I have no right to say that this pairing doesn't make any sense or find any reason to hate it. So I just think, "To each his own."
Otherwise, I perfectly agree with everything you say. Not a fan of PruCan or TurkUkr, (because I kinda don't like the portrayal of Turkey as a sadistic pervert) but I agree, there are a lot of rabid fangirls who think that the mainstream pairings are canon.
It's purely frustrating when you have less-loved pairings as OTPs, while the ones who ship the mainstream ones bash on you by saying that one, over-used sentence. "IT IS NOT HISTORICALLY ACCURATE!!!111"
