Description "Now I must explain to you that the Princess Langwidere had thirty heads - as many as there are days in a month. But of course she could only wear one of them at a time, because she had but one neck... Each head was in a separate cupboard lined with velvet... One key unlocked all the velvet cupboards containing these treasures - a curious key carved from a single blood-red ruby - and this was fastened to a strong but slender chain which the Princess wore around her left wrist."

Excerpt taken from Ozma of Oz, (c) L. Frank Baum

I loved reading the Oz books as I was growing up. Each book contained a fantastic set of characters (some new, some old), who would often travel through strange and whimsical areas of Oz - some of which were hospitable, while others were not.

Princess Langwidere only makes an appearance in one Oz book - Ozma of Oz - but her concept always fascinated me. Instead of changing her dress (the book notes that she always wore the same white gown because it suited all her heads), she could change what she looked like by swapping out her head. This isn't as macabre as it sounds - in Oz, it is nearly impossible to die, so in all likelihood, the bodies that belonged to the heads originally have found replacements (of wood, baked goods, or tin - just about anything will work in Oz), and are probably doing just fine for themselves.

Langwidere is more vain than evil, and her chief contribution to the story is in detaining Dorothy because she thinks that Dorothy's head will make a fine addition to her collection. When Dorothy naturally refuses, she is locked in a tower. I won't say more than that, just in case someone is inclined to go read the story.

The composition of the piece is a nod to Alphonse Mucha, as well as John R. Neill (the illustrator of many Oz books, who also had an Art Nouveau bent). Langwidere is wearing the white gown and ruby key, and the head in her hand is NOT the infamous No. 17 (which is known for its bad temper), but is still a bit of a snob. Behind her is the lineup of cabinets, all safely closed and locked.

Yes, it was a whole series! Β My favorite is Rinkitink in Oz, though it doesn't involve any of the "usual" characters until the very end when Dorothy shows up. Β There are about 14-15 by L. Frank Baum (the original author) as well as some additional "canon" books by other authors (I've read one by Ruth Plumley Thompson, and her style was almost identical to Mr. Baum's). Β The characters and scenarios are fun and inventive.

And thank you. Β I'm glad you liked it

IS there such a thing as a reading list that's "too long"? Β The more books, the better, lol

Ok, that I can agree with. Β I don't have nearly enough time to read everything that looks like I would like it, either.

Thank you! I think you are the first person to comment on this piece who actually knows who Langwidere is The Oz books were some of my favorite stories growing up. Actually, after I drew this, I requested all the Oz books at the library and have been rereading them. I'd forgotten how good they were.

Welcome!
Same here. In fact, the Oz books were what inspired me to write! lol
They are good. I think out of the ones I read "Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz" was my favorite. (That is if that's the one with Eureka and the piglets and the vegetable people) I thought Eureka's little trial at the end was hilarious.

Sadly that is one of the ones the library didn't have (I believe they were missing 3). I will have to find it somewhere. Actually, given how much I've liked them, I may just have to buy a complete set.

aw, that's too bad

when you say complete set do you mean the ones specifically by Baum or are you including the ones done by his editor (based off of his notes) after his death? There are a lot of them! lol

I was thinking the ones by Baum. I know there were others written after he died, but I don't think I've read any except one. It was called "Grampa in Oz" by Ruth Plumly Thompson, and it was illustrated by John R. Neill. I thought it was well-written (and very true to the spirit of the original storytelling), but I've never seen any others. Of course, I haven't gone looking for them either, so that may be why.

I like the Baum ones best. I can give you a few titles of the ones from Ruth Plumly Thompson. I didn't get to read them all when I was younger because they got taken away. My family didn't like the fact that it was all I would read at the time. I guess they didn't realize I was just trying to finish the series. There's one that was written by Baum's grandson as well, but I don't what the name is...

I'm still trying to fathom the fact that anyone could think a child could read "too much"... I'd be interested to hear what the other books were called.

I think my brother had something to do with that lol And well, the titles that I remember are these ones:
The Tin Royal Book of Oz, Kabumpo in Oz, The Cowardly Lion of Oz, The Lost King of Oz, The Hungry Tiger of Oz, The Gnome King of Oz, The Giant Horse of Oz, Jack Pumpkinhead of Oz, and The Yellow Knight of Oz all by Ruth Plumly Thompson. I know there were more but I can't remember the titles.

That reminds me of Kryten from Red Dwarf. He had a few replacement heads himself.

I've never seen the show, but I looked it up on wikipedia. Are you referring to the fact that different actors played Kryten, or did he actually have a replaceable head?

He actually had 3 replacement heads in addition to one he wore. They store his memories and personality, but looked the same.
