The AK-47, or rather known officially as AK(Avtomat Kalashnikova/ "Kalashnikov's Automatic/Assault rifle) is a Soviet Assault rifle designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in the late 1940s. It entered service within Soviet Armed Forces in 1949. Three types of the AK were made. It was a standard issue Soviet Infantrymen rifle until a lighter and improved variant was introduced in 1959, the AKM. AKM gradually replaced the AK in later years. Despite so, the AK was exported to many countries abroad, and got itself license produced and copied by other nations. It was often seen in areas of conflict, like Africa and Middle East, mixed with its more advanced derivatives.

Quoted by Philip Killicoat in "Weaponomics: The Global Market for Rifles" (2007): As of 2004, of the estimated 500 million firearms worldwide, approximately 100 million belong to the Kalashnikov family, three-quarters of which are AK-47s.

Amongst the Soviet trio, Type 2 and 3 AKs are the most common AK-47s encountered, while the Type 1 has become extremely rare nowadays.
