Description These were the Fox Masks [Kistune] I made to debut in Anime North 2009, Craft's Corner.

I had realized in the last little bit that- as much as I love mask making- most people cannot afford the masks I make. Mainly because I carve them full size, and they take a lot of resources and time.
Also, as a bonus problem was the fact that I refused to do specific ethnic masks for people who wanted to use them for non-traditional ceremonies and the like. Decor is one thing, but to take a traditional mask and build a shrine/dance with it as if it's your to do so? Not with MY masks.
As a good compromise to everyone, I found that I could easy carve or sculpt smaller masks so that they were affordable, customizable, non traditional and even if in semblance of something traditional- not capable for use.

Seen here are 8 different foxes that exist in Japanese legend:

Fire Fox, Water fox, Smoke Fox, Earth/Dirt/Mud Fox, Silver Fox, Pipe/Tube Fox, Fox Fire, and Merchant's Fox.
Each fox is said to originate from a specific place, do a specific thing, and when tamed do a specific action/chore at their master's request.
Each mask was stylized either by traditional description, ethnic local of the legend, or images supplied by old scroll sources.

The only two foxes that could not be photographed up close was the Merchant's Fox (the gold one) and the Fire Fox (The red one) because they were both painted with iridescent paints and just could not be photographed without glares and shines too strong for the camera.

I still casts these foxes, and can customize them as well.

Medium: Plaster-resign Volcanic ash cast.
Size: 2.5" X 3"
Price: $10 each. Custom $15

Additional trimming and ornaments can be included in/on these masks as well- contact artist for price and estimate.

Would you be willing to do a normal sized mask in a traditional style? It WILL NOT be used for anything other then decorating and being a present to my friend that is 2/5 Native American. If I can find out the tribe she is from will you give me a price qoute for one?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gishkishenh In reply to Kiinotasha [2009-06-24 04:35:35 +0000 UTC]

These are not Native American masks, but Japanese.
Also, depending on the Nation she is form, they might not have masks at all. When I say "traditional" it usually means traditional method to a specific culture.
I can give you a quote, but full size masks are usually in the hundreds of dollars. I have to carve them from wood.

Also, just something to keep in mind- when speaking to community members, you either are Native American, or not. There is no such thing as fractions.

Sorry We had to figure that out for some scholarships that she applied for so its in my head now.

Ah, ok I will find out for you then. I am not completely up to things with their culture but I am trying to learn what I can from her and her family.

Oh, these are gorgeous, honey. And your compromise to maintain the integrity of them is absolutely creative and wonderful. My favorites are the black and blue, the black-purple-blue, and the white-red. The white and red reminds me of the videogame they did with a fox protagonist - the name escapes me at the moment.

By any chance, did you mean to say "resin" instead of "resign"? I ask because I'm interested in getting into resin casting, and if you have advice to share I'd love to reverently listen....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gishkishenh In reply to NightengaleNeedles [2009-06-11 05:43:48 +0000 UTC]

The black and blue is the water fox- done with an Ainu ethnic touch, black-purple-blue is the for fire and white red is fire fox [complete with pop up blocker!]. XD

Yes, yes I DID mean "resin". But thanks to my horrible spelling capacity, I totally wrote something else. XD
My only advice to you is what I do with every medium I am dabbling in: Go out, get the materials and go by trial and error. The ONLY way to learn, and the BEST way to learn. Because theory is good on paper, practice application is unique to every individual!

As for the videogame, I think you mean "Ookami" and the protagonist is a wolf (or maybe you are thinking of another one?). Traditional masks in Japan (or depiction of the supernatural animals) are similar in that they are white with specific markings on them. They generally resemble one another, but vary slightly for eahc animal and spirit.
