Description
You asked for it, so here's a small tutorial for basic needs. This is the first of many, no worries. I just took a few of the main points and made this. I plan on doing more tutorials and improving old ones. Just a last submission before I go.BTW, comments would be nice

This is going to help me get started with plushies so much. So many thanks for the nice tutorial.
It's surprisingly hard to try and start working on something you have no experience on but still be expecting masterpieces... it's the worst kind of perfectionism. :/
But indeed, thank you for the effort for giving the tips out! :3

it took me a good three years before I considered myself decent XD but I taught myself and didn't have as much access to the internet for tutorials back then. These tips should def help! If you have any questions just ask! I saw you asked one in another comment and I'll get to it soon <3

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh thank you so much for the ball instructions! I'm completely a noob at plushes, and I'm working on my very first pattern ever right now... it's a spider, and while I've figured out all of the hard parts pretty quickly, I'm having a hell of a time just figuring out how to make the abdomen an oval =< I kinda had my parts as semicircles but that wasn't working out like I'd hoped, petals would work so much better! THANK YOU.

oh no problem! I will have to check up on your process! I'm glad it was able to help you <3 the first pattern is always the hardest to do! Just keep working and have patience! Petals are the easiest way to get ball shapes.
Good luck with your tarantula!

I think I'll try that head thing with my knitted ones. I sometimes knit it one piece, and sometimes do something similar to what you showed, so it shouldn't take too much adjusting from my usual style.

This is so great Tuesday! ^0^
This is exactly how I sew when making plushies or repairing holes in clothes X_x
Do you often free hand your patterns? You've had alot of practice, you know how big to make the body compaired to the head. I know I'm having a bit of that problem when I make plushies. I got the hang of proportions pretty fast when I started working with clay. Maybe it just takes time....
Thanks for the tutorial, it's freaking awesome <33

Glacideas In reply to Foureyedalien [2009-10-07 14:02:09 +0000 UTC]
I pretty much always free hand what I make. I do have patterns I've made in a folder for certain plush and when I have harder shapes to use, I'll draw them out on paper and cut it out to have a guide, but mostly I just free hand. I did with this, the kiwi, etc etc. That's not to say I haven't made a head too small or big every now and then and have to make another, but yeah, over time, you get the hang of proportions and it becomes a lot easier
and glad you like it! I hope you can get use out of it ^^

I'm not a fan of pokemon, so I just started sewing the head. It looks terrible (mine does. Yours is amazing)! The petals I made were too small; I had to use seven. And the stitching is coming undone! What should I do?

Glacideas In reply to NinjuhBunneh [2009-09-21 02:28:21 +0000 UTC]
if it's going too far south, then just start over. Sometimes I've had to recut things many times before I'm satisfied. Just make sure to cut them bigger this time
As for stitches, this is what I do: [link]

Ahhh!! You have no idea how long I have been searching for a way to stitch a sphere! Everyone I have asked has said "I would go with at least five petal-shaped pieces, because anything else will look more polygonal than spherical." Well, you have just proved them all WRONG. Seriously, you have just saved my life.
I will link you to the plushie I am about to construct using this method when it is finished, so you can see how it turned out. n.n

this comment means a lot to me ^^ I'm glad you found it useful.
I've always done the four petal one. It may take a little bit of smooshing to shape it, but you only need four
and yes, please link me I'm interested to see what it looks like ^^

MagicalGirlYossy In reply to Glacideas [2009-08-30 22:49:52 +0000 UTC]
Now I feel vaguely guilty, because I just stitched the head earlier today, and I ended up making it out of three pieces and a little bit flattish instead of following your method. ;^; BUT IN THE FUTURE if ever I must construct a sphere, I will most definitely keep in mind that four pieces are absolutely a possibility.

Rachelfaces In reply to ??? [2009-08-24 00:44:08 +0000 UTC]
um would you recomend using a sewing machine, or a needle and thread to do this. ?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Glacideas In reply to Rachelfaces [2009-08-24 20:19:42 +0000 UTC]
Either. For little parts like the tail, hand stitching might be best, but sewing machines tend to make stitches more uniform. So whichever you work best with :3 there's no right or wrong ^^

I never looked up much about sewing techniques or anything like that because I don't usually make stuff like that, but I'll try to keep the hidden stitch in mind. I always wondered how they made stuff look seamless

It's so nice that you can take the time to explain how you sew, a lot of plush-makers seem really angry when people ask for even a simple explanation to get them started.
This is just a little confusing to read through since I don't sew, but it's very informative and simplistic, and I think the pictures make it clear how to do this. I'm sure once you start cutting out the shapes and following the instructions, it makes perfect sense. Even if someone doesn't understand something like hidden seams, you've given them names so people can look up further information.
The Flygon at the end is a nice touch to show how you can integrate this sphere into a real plush.
It's a really helpful, friendly tutorial, a lot of your watchers are probably thankful for this.

thank you for the very insightful comment <3 I appreciate you taking the time to comment. You're right that it is confusing for beginers. I tried to be as simple as I could, but I should make a "plushie for beginers" tutorial with techniques even a first-timer can use ^^ and the work up. It's a good idea!
You're right, though. A lot of plush makers can get angry if you ask for patterns. I don't like to give specific patterns since I freehand a lot (like "what did you do to make x plushie?") but I don't mind lending out a helping hand. I love sewing and I want others to try it out for themselves if they want. Everyone has to start somewhere and I like seeing how people progress ^^
The only patterns I won't give out are like the pokedoll pattern since I'm still tinkering with it, but I don't mind helping to explain other things ^^
thanks again for your comment. It's very helpful for future tutorials!

Looks nice! I've been experimenting with the rounded head shape too, though I used circles instead of petal shapes. Turned out to be a plus-shaped square. XD
So the petal info is useful. Thanks!

Glacideas In reply to DemandinCompensation [2009-07-27 02:30:52 +0000 UTC]
XD aww, I never would think to do circles. But yes, the petal shape works best and the more uniform you can get them, the more round the shape.
