Dearest sister... I have allowed myself to stay in your shadow for far too long.Tonight, our subjects shall truly appreciate the beauty of the night.
For the sun will never rise again, and the night shall reign eternal!
Luna, please... Don't make me do this...

Luna had finally reached her breaking point in regards to the ponies always ignoring her night sky. She paced about her room, putting the last pieces of her plan together. If their subjects didn't want to see how beautiful the night sky was, she would make them see it. As cruel as it seemed, they would wake up to a world where night was all-encompassing, and could not be ignored. The door to her room swung open, and in the doorway stood her sister. Her plans needed to change to accommodate for this snag.
I decided to make this drawing to visually 'counter' the Celestia drawing I created a couple of weeks ago, which can be found here: [link] . It's been sitting in the back of my mind as an idea, and I just had to draw it in between studying for exams.
As you can see, Luna is already beginning to turn into Nightmare Moon. I figured she was about the same size as Celestia before her transformation and subsequent rescue by Twilight and company.

As I have said many times before, I give a great deal of credit to artists who can make their fan-art closely resemble the style and look of the original source material, and this picture is no exception. The lines, the colouring, the way it feels like an actual flash image. If I hadnβt been told this was fan-art, Iβd actually mistake this for something made by the showβs actual animators. So on that count, it looks great.
As for what the pictureβs about, again Iβm impressed. The artist has done a fine job in capturing the feel of the moment. You look at this picture and you can almost feel the frustration and anger that the character of Luna is going through in this scenario. The addition of darker elements, like the dark magic twisting up her leg and the cat-like irises of her eyes, all add to the feeling that this is a character who is close to the ends, ready to tip over.
As mentioned in the description, this is actually a companion picture to an earlier work by this artist, the latter of which depicted Lunaβs sister, Celestia, challenging her. Having now looked at both pictures I can safely say that this one is a good match for the older picture. I can see both in my head right now and it is a truly powerful image.
However, the one area this picture lets itself down on is originality. At this point I have seen many pictures depicting Lunaβs turn to the dark side, so I canβt really say this picture is breaking new ground by being about this subject. However, Iβve never felt that originality was the be-all-end-all of any pictureβs quality. Just because somethingβs been done before doesnβt make another attempt at it any less good because of it. So even though it loses some points for originality, know that this does not bother me in the slightest. Itβs still a good picture.
Overall while I canβt say this is the best Luna picture Iβve seen on DeviantArt, Itβs certainly a very well-made picture in itβs own right. The art work is good to look at and consistent with the style of the show. The events it depicts carry enough emotion to get the viewer wrapped up in whatβs going on and the whole thing has a very professional feel about it.
A very worthy piece of art.

I honestly love how you can see the transformation slowly engulfing her and transforming her into her nighmare. Even at the height of her anger she is still showing some control.

Don't do it, Luna! Your subjects LOVE you and your night! Turn not a blind eye to the astronomers, who could not see the stars because of your elder sister's blinding Sun! And what of those families (and I can assure you they are not few) who regularly gaze at the night sky as they enjoy a late-night picnic? Do not ignore these loving subjects, Princess Luna, I beseech you! They would be horrified by the nightmare that has possessed you and wait is she being banished to the Moon...?

you said you believe she's about the same size as Celestia before her transformation and subsequent rescue by Twilight and co? but she's not, she's shorter than Celestia, because we see them side by side a few times in the show, like at the wedding's reception, at the coronation, and even after her rescue, as Nightmare Moon, she's probably the same size/height as Celestia, but as Luna, she's shorter/smaller than Celestia, she's also, not fully grown either.

OH yeah, this is the kinda pic I've been waiting for. And one can't help but ponder some kind of tie between Sombra and NMM given their rise to prominence around the same time a millenium ago, both members of the 'pony' race rather than some alien creature like a draconequus or changeling, corrupted by dark magic...

It puts emphasis on the fact that she is disrupting the day, rather than just putting on a pretty meteor shower or something (though why Cele would be opposed to that...)

Maybe the reason for Luna's random distrust of Twilight was based more on feelings than logic. She might have subconsciously sensed the same seeds of Hatred and Fear buried deep in her heart, just waiting to take root.
Still not sure how I feel about the possibility of Celestia wanting to make her an Alicorn...
But it'd be fun to see those fears bear fruit.
