Description Well, the arm study is taking a little longer than expected, so I decided to use it to also make a skin tutorial for how I draw flesh. I do the face slightly differently than this, but this is how I do the body overall. I also gave you a little peak at how I kind of plan out the body/draw skeletons and also how I think of colors in my head and choose them for drawings. Something I didn't mention because I ran out of room is changing the first shadow color. I chose that reddish orangish because I feel like shadows in the warmer color range tend to look more like natural lighting, especially on skin. If you want something more magic feeling I would probably choose something either purple or green, and if you want something cold/sad/rainy/dark I'd go with cold colors like blue.

I hope you found this helpful. If you'd like to see more tutorials like this from me give me a suggestion. I might not make a tutorial if I'm not super comfortable in my ability with what you ask, but at the very least I'll do a study (a study would be like my eye practice whereas this would be a tutorial). Or if there's something in this tutorial, or another one of my tutorials/studies you would like me to elaborate on or go over again please let me know. I actually really like doing tutorials and studies because it helps me as well as helping you wonderful people (at least I hope I help you XD). If you have any questions feel free to ask

Totally, if you're going for something more cell shaded stopping there works perfectly. The end does get a little more complex so don't feel bad for it going over your head. And if it's not what you're aiming for anyway don't sweat it too much.

A lot of people will tell you a lot of things about color picking. Knowing how to pick colors well is an incredible tool that takes a long time to master and while I know a lot of color theory, I still feel I have much to learn in terms of training my eyes. Color sampling works and if you like the result that's what's important really, but if you ever want to press your skills trying to match colors to what you want or just playing around choosing them can help a lot.

Overall so long as you like what you're doing that's what's most important. Your experience will grow naturally on its own. Just keep finding things you can improve on and working towards that and you will go far

Yup.
Look at me, it's been years since I haven't drawn something seriously. I've nearly forgotten how good it feels, dumb me.
As you say, doing what you like is important.

Concerning colors, I'll train my eye if I can. Thanks for your advices. :wave

Ooh I've seen the 6th step many times and I never knew how it was done! I though they used a brush with fringe effect or something.
Thanks for this neat tutorial!

This is so helpful! thank you so much for making this!
I had a small epiphany on the color compliment wheel. But now that I think about it it makes so much sense. ^_^' this gives me a better idea on how to color digitally too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GlassLotuses In reply to JumpinJaggi [2015-07-04 01:16:56 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately, I've found that the digital color wheels on the programs I've used don't have color complement wheels, they tend to have a larger green sections probably because the human eye sees more shades of green. So I end up having to look at my physical color complement wheel. So keep that in mind while drawing. Usually it's not too hard to figure out what the complements would be with a little thought (like red's direct complement would be the other two primary colors mixed). You can find color complement wheels on the internet though. I've found them particularly from sites for home painting. So just be aware of that when trying to do the complements digitally

JumpinJaggi In reply to GlassLotuses [2015-07-04 18:04:34 +0000 UTC]

Ok, I'll look up the color compliment wheel. It's interesting that so many digital programs don't have these. :/ but using color compliments doesn't seem too hard. thank you so much for the advice!

GlassLotuses In reply to JumpinJaggi [2015-07-05 01:48:10 +0000 UTC]

No problem. And yeah, I was kind of surprised when I noticed the digital programs didn't use them. But it makes sense that they give more green colors. It's just a bit more difficult when it comes to picking colors like I do

MaelstromEX In reply to GlassLotuses [2015-07-03 08:23:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'd wish to do something graphics related, but i don't have a presentable portfolio.. i mean.. i can do pretty much everything people demand, but I kinda can't get up on my own to design senseless layouts n stuff xD
So mainly as a graphics designer or IT-Tech and if necessary i will even work as a night guard as long as it pays the bills XD

GlassLotuses In reply to MaelstromEX [2015-07-03 08:31:37 +0000 UTC]

My boyfriend worked as a night guard for a while in LA and then as a guard here when he moved. He did a lot of varying guard work. Having a guard card is a very flexible thing, I found. He once was a guard at the fair a year ago when a bull got loose XD He was patrolling the grandstands at the horse race track at the time and just went upstairs when he got the message on his walkie talkie thing.

MaelstromEX In reply to GlassLotuses [2015-07-03 09:24:18 +0000 UTC]

I worked as a guard as well for like a half year, was an okay job, but I spent 200 hours a month working for under average pay, thats why it's not the most pleasant option for me XD
At least, i don't appreciate being a potential punching bag for only 7€ per hour, since we weren't even allowed to carry electroshockers or pepperspray xD

GlassLotuses In reply to MaelstromEX [2015-07-03 09:30:37 +0000 UTC]

That's pretty much the same way it is here in the US XD I don't know what they're allowed to carry but the guard card all guards are suppose to have signifies that they took a defense training course which taught them about their rights as civilians regarding things like that as well as some defense tactics.

MaelstromEX In reply to GlassLotuses [2015-07-03 09:34:37 +0000 UTC]

Here they don't give you anything, except for a phone to be able to call the cops.. xD
They don't train you, or anything else.. you are not allowed to use violence, you are not even allowed to hold someone until the cops come to pick him up xD
their order is that if somebody hits you, you don't hit back, you lay on the ground and wait for the ambulance to come pick you up.. and i am definitely not the type for that xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GlassLotuses In reply to MaelstromEX [2015-07-03 09:38:52 +0000 UTC]

That doesn't sound like being a guard at all XD but I do understand the logic. Often times guards here are used more as a visual deterrence more than anything. They don't actually expect you to do anything.

MaelstromEX In reply to GlassLotuses [2015-07-03 09:43:40 +0000 UTC]

I don't mean to say that I am the rambo type, but hell I don't wanna be just a visual deterrence, that might not even intimidate anyone, which might result in being beaten into a pulp at work XD
