To be fair, Max has had a rough reign. Not that it excuses his prick ways, but he was a good king before fighting a four-year war, losing his wife and heir in that war, essentially getting stabbed in the back as soon as he won said war, being coerced to give up the throne he no longer held in order to survive, losing his memories, getting put in a crystallic coma, getting mind controlled, getting crippled, then poisoned, then crippled again, aging prematurely, and slowly losing his wits...

Prick as he was, the last fifteen years have been utter hell for Max.
