Description
Come one, come all! Here it is at long last, the ‘secret project’ you’ve all been waiting for is..... *drum roll*..... a new Sonic webcomic! *fanfare.... church bells ring*As you’ve probably guessed by now, this comic is a continuation of the original Sonic the Hedgehog comics before the “Worlds Collide” crossover. For a lot of you, this is a long time coming. Many readers can testify that the quality of Sonic comics has plunged narratively and (to some extent) artistically ever since the infamous reboot that wiped out most of the beloved characters inhabiting Mobius. It was an event from which the series never fully recovered, shackled by Sega’s mandates to make the story as bland and emotionally sterile as possible. To me, the final straw was the “Worlds Unite” crossover - intended purely as a marketing device in spite of a creative void. That’s when I got the idea for this story. I told myself one thing:
“If I want Sonic done right, I’ll just have to do it myself!”
So this is the result! I started working on the script back in September 2015. I wanted to write several issues in advance so that I have time to evaluate the narrative structure and make sure that themes and plot points are introduced early enough. (It was also during this time that I learned of the fan group Archie Sonic Online and their attempt to create a similar webcomic, but they’re following a different route for their story and we haven’t shared ideas.) Once I was assured of my script’s integrity, I started drawing the first issue in February. It’s been a difficult and exhausting year working on this in secret - especially since I didn’t have much personal art to share on my gallery during the interim - but I hope you find the wait worthwhile.
The main cover featured here was only completed last weekend. I wanted to gain more EXP drawing the pages before tackling something this complex. I’m a big fan of Drew Struzan’s artwork and I strived to paint my cover in the same style as his movie posters. (Coincidentally, my favourite Sonic cover is from issue #114, which is a parody of Struzan’s “Attack of the Clones” poster.) The Sonic comics are reputed for some memorable covers - mostly from Pat Spaz - so I wanted to do mine justice if I intend to continue the series during its heyday. I hope this conveys the scope and energy of the story and the first step towards rejuvenating the series with the depth, grit and heart it once had.
So here’s the schedule: Next Monday I’ll post the intro page + issue #1 cover, then I’ll upload one page every Monday thereafter.
Weekly updates gives me time to draw the next issue so that you don’t have to wait too long for its release. So stick around! This webcomic is a labour of love for one of my favourite comic series and an attempt to provide closure to longtime readers who want to see the loose ends of the original continuity tied up. What happened to Mecha Sally? What’s going on with the echidnas? Where did Bunnie go? How will the Freedom Fighters deal with Naugus and that mutated Tails Doll? All of these questions will be answered in “Sonic Retold”! Enjoy the read!
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to contact Dreamworks about the film rights....

Yes Yes Yes Yes!!!!!
Thank you! Thank You!!!!
Finally an answer to my prayers!!!!
As you said I also felt that the recent STH comics has lost it's luster.
I tried to get a accustomed to the new continuity but I always think about the previous continuity, the characters, the stories that never got told. Not to mention with this recent saga (world shattering saga) has been disappointing. There's no sense of danger or emotional conflict, which is stupid because you think with the world ending and all you think there be more going on but nope! Nothing! I just want the damn saga to be over already!
Sorry about the rant, I'm just really happy that there is finally some light out of this long dark tunnel.
Once again thanks for doing this.

The original Robotnik died in Sonic #50. His current doppelgänger is called Eggman.

DAMN. I have a lot to say about this cover alone because the word AMAZING isn't enough.
I honestly love how Sally is in the middle of everyone as a robot because she was pretty much the main problem of the series when she was roboticized.
Snively at the hands of Eggman because he obviously has nowhere to go, he's trapped within his uncle's hands and has no control over what he can and cannot do.
Bunnie on the bottom right with Antoine's shadow cast over since he's been injured, she goes on a trip on her own to clear her mind while she's hopelessly confused and sadden by the recent events.
Geoffery (I think that's how you spell his name) and Naugus having a role in this and not forgotten about like the main series did. God I wish Archie would pay more attention to the characters they put in the story so THEY WOULDN'T BE FORGOTTEN ABOUT.
(I heard they changed Sally's father's name....Forgot what it was.)
Anyways, this was a great piece! I love looking it over it and finding someone I didn't see the first time I looked it over.
Can't wait to see more of the story!~

This. This would get me back in the fandom and fired up. This is what a cover should look like, not the shit being published now. You have singlehandedly pwnd the current Archie team. I am now curious to read your story too.
Colors composition textures perspective everything about this is so professional!!! Keep up the amazing work!

Wish you could also retcon some of the shittier elements of the pre-SGW universe since it was already slipping before the legal kerfuffle. The "Secret Freedom Fighters" and Sally having any interest in Khan (let alone kissing him) were some of the notable offenders.

While I agree the SallyXKhan stuff was unnecessary, what was wrong with the Secret Freedom Fighters? They were an effective force against Ixis Naugus.

Maarons In reply to AlphamonOuryuuken [2016-10-18 13:18:57 +0000 UTC]
They didn't need to be a secret. Just have the characters trek off to find the backstory of Naugus to learn how to defeat him and celebrate each of the characters. Showcase the twins' nature abilities and tracking skills. Leave the fortune that befalls them because of Larry ambiguous. I always liked him in his original appearances and he was already part of the Reserve Freedom Fighters. Make Silver the puzzle solver as they enter the ancient temples of Ixis. Showcase Elias' diplomatic skills and let him grow as a leader by learning command like his sister. You could have bickering due to Larry allegedly causing jinxed stuff to nearly befall them and Silver being a bit irritating since that's his gimmick to a degree then Elias has to mediate between them. Frankly I'd make it a springboard to the idea that he shouldn't be king so much as the Royal Ambassador. Shard I didn't really care for. His interactions with NICOLE were interesting but ultimately I wasn't sorry about his death.

Naugus had already manipulated his way onto the throne, undermining his rule from behind the scenes was the best option since Sonic and co. were busy with the Eggman Empire.

Maarons In reply to AlphamonOuryuuken [2017-01-14 14:21:14 +0000 UTC]
Of course they'd work behind the scenes but there was absolutely no reason it had to be a secret since there were others (namely the main characters) who'd eagerly support their efforts with discretion. Tails found out and did nothing to jeopardize the secret. Just entrust Rotor, Antoine, Bunnie, Sonic, and Tails with the knowledge and maybe a few others so that their covert actions could have more room to move while cover stories were made for them by those who were privy and not away on the front lines. Rotor was sitting on the council and Bunnie was having issues due to being made fully organic. OR do exactly what I just described above and have the team leave the city and actually go quest for backstory on Naugus and he Ixis order (we already know his personal backstory) and find a way to depower him. That way the team gets individual focus based on their unique qualities and they have a more spelled out goal of what they're doing than just sneaking around in a cave beneath the castle in stupid jumpsuits.

AlphamonOuryuuken In reply to Maarons [2017-01-14 14:32:57 +0000 UTC]
First of all, those jumpsuits looked awesome and that mission was the only thing that stopped him from bending everyone on the council to his will.
Second of all, considering the fact that Sonic and co. left right as they were being formed it's possible that they didn't get a chance to let them know, not to mention Bunnie left as well. While I can buy telling Rotor, they were probably just taking precaution since robotisizasion exists again and didn't want to risk anyone who knew spilling the secret should they fall victim to it. Not to mention Nuagus' mind manipulation could cause one of them to slip up when trying to not mention them if he's crafty enough.
Third, considering they sent Shard out to capture Kurutzu, I think it's easy to say that they were planning their own special countermeasures against the evil wizard, sadly considering the reboot wiped them out of existence we won't be seeing what those measures were…

Maarons In reply to AlphamonOuryuuken [2017-01-14 16:39:01 +0000 UTC]
That's your opinion and I don't share it.
But that still doesn't even address the whole leave the city and find how Naugus has powers to depower him plot I suggested. Then all that mind control stuff would been a non-issue. And even then, the Sword of Light, which was already being used against Naugus once, could have come back into play by doing a quest to up its power to better fight Naugus after seeing it nearly defeat him earlier. Ether way, do a quest instead of the pointless super secret spy shit because that way, along the journey, you could showcase each member for the skills they bring to the table.

Honestly while I do love/prefer the old timeline, I don't mind the current one. In fact it was so refreshing to see them actually take a simpler route and use elements from the games for the new comic universe, that's something I've always felt the need for in the previous comics. As complex and thrilling as the old timeline was, I will have to face it that it had become SO convoluted and filled with loose ends, there was no way the comics would be able to last much longer without spiralling into a mess of fillers and uninteresting plots(just like the comics actually did a long time ago). And god don't even get me started on Penders' stuff, he had an awful tendency to complicate this already complex universe and make stories drag soooo much ¬¬'. I for example have never liked the echidna society backstory he created and every time they popped up it felt so... not Sonic, you know? It was extremely convoluted and overall painfully boring, only once the echidnas stopped looking like Knuckles clones and we had the last Enerjak arc I grew interest, and even then I still couldn't ignore all the stuff that annoyed me in that society's development.
There were many things like that in the old timeline, unfortunately, and I'm glad to see that dead weight gone nowadays. I do miss everything that made it great regardless, and I can't wait to see what you will do with it. Looks like I have a new comic to follow ^^.

glitcher In reply to Night-Anders [2016-10-18 19:21:53 +0000 UTC]
Personally, I think the echidna society was one of the best additions to the old continuity. It fleshed out Knuckles' race with an expansive history and culture that enriched the world of Mobius. Yes, it did get pretty complicated at times. But once I was able to keep track of Knuckles' extended family relations, I found that they formed a very deep and engrossing society. That's one of the things I miss most now that Sega insist Knuckles remain the only living echidna. *sigh*

Night-Anders In reply to glitcher [2016-10-18 20:00:36 +0000 UTC]
Oh of course, don't get me wrong, I really liked the idea of fleshing out the echidna society, I simply don't think it was executed very well, you know? Most of it didn't feel organic or belonging to the Sonic universe to me... or the characters were simply too unlikable for me to care(man, Locke was developed as such a douche for the most part). The last straw that officially cut off my interest in the echidna society was the green Knuckles arc that lasted FOREVER, that is the biggest example I can think of when it comes to this concept not being executed well -.-'. I think that only by the 150th issue or so I started getting interested on the echidnas because their potential had begun to show and was being taken on new routes, specially with the character design starting to improve from knuckles clones to unique, interesting looks.

Then why complain about all its wrong and going out of your way to bash Penders... If you miss it so much. Kinda of hypocritical if you ask me.

Night-Anders In reply to ZentrixStudios [2016-10-18 03:10:06 +0000 UTC]
Well, just because I loved the old timeline it doesn't mean it's perfect. It had its flaws and I don't pretend they didn't exist, fortunately to me its great aspects overwrite the bad and thus I won't stop liking it. There's nothing hypocritical about that.

Yeah, the comic feels too much like an ad now. Sans the characters and with all the rules in place, it's sadly lost a piece of it's heart and soul. Still, I wish it the best.
