Description
Okay...so...I am more than aware that I just did onix. I realize this is yet another pokΓ©mon, while the representation of other franchises ia very low. Also, this is the fourth ground type, and second steel type I've done, while dragon, poison, and ice have yet to get any representation. Hell, I even recognize that this is nothing short of the fifth reptilian creature I have done.Tough.
To be honest, there is a very specific reason I did this one. I can't tell you what it is, for risk of an involved party seeing, but if you really wish to know, you can PM me...we'll see.
In any case...I am very tired.
I will update the journal soon with future plans.
Leave me comments.
Steelix belongs to Nintendo, and Gamefreak.

Transcription for the Hard of Seeing
==============================
(from top to bottom, left to right)
"When onix develop into steelix, their increased girth grants them greater strength at the expense of some flexibility. The 'fins' present along steelix bodies are actually for stability, helping to support its massive head."
"Males are usually smaller than females and have more pronounced grinding teeth."
"Steelix live even further underground than onix. Onix usually nest about a third of a mile below ground, while steelix can be foud as low as six tenths of a mile underground. The added pressure helps to further harden steelixs' carapace."
"In addition to the outer layers of defense, steelix also have very sturdy skeletons. In three places along their body, steelix have specially adapted ribs that provide it with balance. Also, steelixs' thick skulls are shaped like shovels to help them move through earth."
"Though steelix are only slightly longer than onix, their bodies are proportionally much thicker. This is not only a result of thicker armor, but steelixs' muscle mass is almost twice that of onix."

I guess I didn't say anything about this one either...
I probably didn't say much, because I don't find steelix that interesting a pokemon. This one's all right. What are those fin type things derived from? Are they some sort of ribs?
I think that onix in the scale drawing is a little small... If onix are 26 feet long, then it should be longer than 4 times the height of the man considering he's about six feet tall... Picky, I know.
Still well done.

Onix is 28', and that man is about 1/5 of onix's length. Trust me, it works.
The blades on the side of a steelix, are, yes, adapted rib bones. Read the blurbs on the piece maybe?

Oh, I actually like the fact you did two stages in a row. I'm sure people find it all satisfying, rather than taking offense in your stepping out of order
Especially the main picture looks just excellent!
I never noticed steelix's head is in fact shaped like a shovel, but it does make sense now you've pointed it out!
Have you thought of a way to explain their rotating of the vertebrae/carapace segments? (At least I think that's what they do in the 3D games.)
I ask because I always imagined steelix's fins to work like a screw thread when drilling through the ground.
Well, I guess an infinite spin of joints is anatomically speaking utopic to have in a real creature. But you never know...
And last question, does it wear its skull on the outside, a bit like marowak? Because skull and head carapace look essentially the same, apart from the nostrils.

Oh, I'm sure they did. I was just joking around.
As far as the rotating segments go, infinite rotation is a bit beyond any bio-logical (nyuk nyuk) explanation, so the way I see it, these two are very flexible, not only along the length of their body, but around it as well...so they can still rotate their "segments" to a degree, than turn them around the opposite direction, and so on, not unlike buizel's tails?
Nope nope. The carapace is a separate layer all together, just like on a turtles back.

Oi, I like it. I noticed that with both Onix and Steelix, though, they remain very similar to the original "anime" drawings. I guess when you have such unnatural beasts it only makes sense, as opposed to your other works like Snubull and Octillery which are far more realistic.
Anyways, not much to say that I don't normally say. So good job!

I really just couldn't think of too many ways to alter them. They're pretty simple creatures, anatomically speaking, so I didnt want to altar them too much (the armor is pretty basic...can't change it too much). I gave them the belly scales...but otherwise, they really just didn't seem that different.

It's nice to see you haven't took the easy eway out and just given it six legs or something, as it happens I think the ribs thing makes sense.

Well...they actually do sort of function as limbs on a very basic level. They are there for support. But yeah...inserting a bone-structure chance as drastic as adding limbs definitely wouldn't sit right with me. Really, I didn't even know what they were until after I'd started drawing him, and I realized, "Wow...his body way thicker than onix's or your average snake's. If he tried to rear up his head, his rearend would lift off the ground!" So the way I see it, steelix has those to keep it from rolling over unintentionally, and also to lodge in the ground when rearing up.
I think too much...

Well it's just as well you do. If you didn't alot of your pokemon and nintendo stuff wouldn't make as much sense.

Goodness no. That's not at all the way things like that work. The thing you have to remember about onix and steelix is that while they are name after and resemble stone and metal, the armor they grow is really carapace (like you would find on a turtle), fortified with minerals that they consume through their tunneling. While it has they have some similar qualities to rock and steel, they technically are not.

This is possibly the coolest incarnation of Steelix yet.
Unfortunately, I am also tired at the moment, or I'd give some better feedback... I suppose I can say the main pic is very impressive, and the eyes are great... comparing the skulls and explaining the ribs were a nice touch.
