Description
My first stamp. Because sometimes art school doesn't happen.( and other times art class can't be tolerated. X3 )
*** 10/01/10***
Wow, this got a lot of faves/views! Now That I look back on it, it's an ugly stamp. xD I think there are prettier self taught stamps out there now. I should really update this thing. =O
THANKS GUYS! KEEP DRAWING OR ELSE!

Art school didn't happen in my case because I didn't want to turn my hobby into a must.

We aren't exactly teaching ourselves... We are also influenced by the artists in our community. They who give critiques help us learn. They who set an example help us learn. We really have been influenced by others instead of "teaching" ourselves.

isn't it just annoying when people ask who taught you to draw? i always have to answer, MYSELF.

It's the same with me. I figure out how to draw things on my own - no references, no tutorials, no art books, nothing. My work may not be as high-quality as something that was made by a person who took classes, but I'm still pretty proud of myself.

what? why would you purposely not use references? that's only hindering you from improving.

It's not that I purposefully stay away from them, I just don't find much need for them.

Oh and I forgot: doing only in school is not enough, you gotta love it too and do it in your free time, which means basically teaching yourself.
AND NOT TO BE LAZY is probably the biggest point.

Even if you took classes, it has to be in you, that ability, to notice things, and to be able to put them on 2D medium. School is not everything.

Never took a class.
I learned from observation and other artists I have been exposed to- I think every artist should learn this way
but you CAN ask for help

DAMN STRAIGHT!!!! I have been taking art in classes all my life - most of i any ways - and I dont learn anything new!!!! SELF TAUGHT!!!
I went from stick people, to bubble people, to retarded I don't knows, to my current style today!!! All school ever taught me was to colour in between the lines.... and I would have figured it out eventually...
TALK ABOUT AWSOME!!!! SELF TAUGHT!!!

I HATE my art class.
Here's an example:
"Today we will be drawing windows, children!"
*20 minutes later when no one can follow him*
"ASDFGH YOU CAN GIVE ME ONE GOOD WINDOW OR YOU CAN GIVE ME GARBAGE! ASDFG!"
Its freaking absurd.

Same as me, just that the subject is geography xD. My art teacher was such a nub. Fortunately, I'm on summer holidays *epic pose*
Sometimes I thought he had some kind of fetish involving greek heads and vector-like shadows.

i don't see why quite a lot of the comments make art school out to be this torture chamber that everyone going to secretly hates, and that the only thing art students learn is landscapes and still lifes o_o im guessing everyone's just basing it off those dinky elective classes they had in middle school and high school but i will tell you for a fact real art classes and art schools do not run the same way.
:/ unfortunate everyone seems to have this generalization, because i love going to an art school and no one there "hates it" or thinks its "useless".

And proud!
I went from stick figures to my current style over three years of hard work, with nobody but myself, deviantart and the occasional anatomy book giving me any help.
High school art class isn't very good for people who like to draw people and animals. It's all landscape, still life and learning about different media. Your style has to develp on your own sometimes, and I like the way mine is turning out. Still a work in progress, though XD
