What I really hate is being good at graphics and set up and design but being overlooked for a job because I dont have the shiny degree to go with it. GAH. Best job I had was as a botanical Illustrator for two years in college, and I got it because a friend's dad needed one and I doodled. LOVED that job, and I wanna do it again.
ANyway, Im rambling. SOrry!

Heh... I really wish I could use stamps...
I take art classes in my school for college but frankly, the teacher is a close-minded jerk who picks on me and tries to crush my "little cartoons." She's a useless teacher and I've progressed in my art on my own with references to books or comics I've read.
What's best about teaching yourself is that when you're happy with your art you can find even more solace in knowing that it really is your art! n_n

For me is the opposite, people ask always to me if i am a self taught XD. The true is that i am a very slow learner. This make me think that i will never realize my dream.
I have learned nothing from art class (in fact my drawing don't show i was an art student), i triyng to learn from myself now. But i still not consider myself as a self taught, because i did anyway 5 years of art school.

EVERYTHING I know about drawing is self-taught! *proud *
I remember a friend I had once. We were always competing about who drawed the nicest, and she used to win EVERY time...
-_-
But now, she's jealous of my anime style, I can tell when I get 5- or 5+'s in art-class, and she only gets 4's.. It looks as if I've killed her mom or something... *rofl*
The revenge is as sweet as strawberries!
But I think she deserved it... she is so rude, and let the whole "drawing" thing in to her head... It's a long story, actually o_o
But yeah, as I said, the whole drawing thing got to her head, and she played supperior, and was all rude (to everyone, even tough they had nothing to do with drawing.. >__< ), now she has no friends... o___O
My point is:
SAY THANK YOU when somebody says that your art is nice, then you're safe from being a wannabe supperior... :]
(No, I'm not saying I AM better than her, really xD I'm just not letting these drawing things GET to my head, it's like... just something I do! I don't do it for creds... )

Ffffft. Well, while I'd die to go to an art school, I still have to maintain that I taught myself what I know. All the art classes I've taken have, let me face it, failed me. Public school art classes are damn near useless. The teachers are usually bossy bastards who think if you aren't doing it their way, you're doing it the wrong way. And that's just not how art works. Only one class has EVER helped me, and it was only for like one section.
I'm hoping better if I get into an art school.Which would be bitchin'.

lol wth, all these comments seem to go on about how bad art classes are. XD I take art as a school course and it's amazing. They don't teach you things like 'how to draw an apple' or 'how to shade'....but they teach you how to think outside the square and follow processes to create your own artworks which you couldn't have achieved alone.
Nevertheless, I maintain that I'm as 'self-taught' as anyone else here....art isn't really taught, it's something that's improved upon by your own observation and practice. So that being said, why is everyone so proud of being 'self-taught'? No-one should go to art class expecting to 'learn' art just because the teacher tells them the theory, it just doesn't work like that, y'know? You learn yourself, classes or not ;D

BatmanWithBunnyEars In reply to SakuraKitt [2009-11-03 03:31:28 +0000 UTC]
How could you follow any predetermined "process" and come up with an original idea, as opposed to a repackaged rehash of what everyone else already did?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SakuraKitt In reply to BatmanWithBunnyEars [2009-11-03 10:36:19 +0000 UTC]
I never said the "process" was predetermined now, did I? ;D
Perhaps at some art schools or classes...but only terrible ones which no-one should attend. Classes for kids however, are an exception. You have to learn the rules before you can break them with art.

BatmanWithBunnyEars In reply to SakuraKitt [2009-11-03 11:07:48 +0000 UTC]
In order for a process to be written in specific terms in a textbook, it would have to be predetermined, right?
At first when I started drawing, I focused on drawing cars with technical accuracy, with the only attempt at uniqueness being in the lines of the cars themselves. Later I started fooling around with distorted perspectives.
Recently I've come up with some truly unique ideas (most of which I have yet to draw), and all these ideas came to me spontaneously. I can't imagine any mechanical step-by-step process that could yield inspiration as such. Technical correctness, dimensional accuracy, emotive composition, colors that go well together and/or represent realistic shadows - maybe. One-off novel ideas - I don't see how.
But feel free to enlighten me if I've missed something...

"In order for a process to be written in specific terms in a textbook, it would have to be predetermined, right?"
I'm literally not sure what you mean. Perhaps art institutions and school art work differently in our areas or countries? Feel free to explain what you mean further. I maintain that the artists process of both their thoughts/ideas, and their techniques in putting them to paper, are usually open to the student in any good school.
Taking art throughout my life has had the opposite effect on me to what you say it is: You say it's uninspiring and producing unoriginal artists who only have 'technique' without true x-factor... next generation thinking...or unique qualities. Many (not all) of the artists on dA prove my point exactly. The majority of non-art-educated dAers seem to spend their time attempting to draw perfect anime/realism/disney by copying some of the great anime/realism/disney artists. I cringe to think this could've been me if my art class hadn't educated me on modern fine art. Beauty in art isn't perfection in anatomy or perfect, clean technique. Hell no...it's expression, perhaps tight, but often very lose and abstract...experimenting with colour, composition and form in different mediums- no limits.
Don't you think it's arrogant for an artist to feel it is better to remain ignorant of processes and techniques well-established artists in the modern world use, in order to be 'unique'?
Not to mention, it is essential to actually know current art well (in general and individual artists) of our time, in oder to move forward into artistic thinking beyond our time. (this is partly what I meant by "you have to know the rules to break them")

Sorry for the delayed response, but I've been preoccupied for a while. In any case, I can't think of any way to rephrase my question, so I'll just ask: How could one go about teaching creativitiy? I don't think you can, and here's why.
I have tried to become a good musician, to put my poetry to music. I looked up everything I could to learn how to sing, and how to compose music. After months of research and practice, My voice still sounds terrible and my compositions are mediocre at best. I know a lot obout the technical aspects of proper voice production and what makes music prodice certain emotions, but without the natural talent, the book knowledge is meaningless.
By contrast, I could always draw pretty well with no training even as a young child. As I began to take art more seriously, I came up with novel ideas that would stimulate the mind of the viewer. For example, my latest project involves a tesselation that can be assembled in multiple ways, and I will use that to tell a story. (It's not done yet.) While this may have been done already, I've never seen it, and it exemplifies what I mean by true creativity. I have also invented about 20 original origami designs.
So I conculded that for any creative endeavor, natural talent accounted for virtually all ability. If you could give me an example of the sort of thing that would be taught in a good art school, maybe I could understand what you have in mind when you give them such credit...

Bwah sorry, I've kind of lost what point exactly we were argueing about, and don't want to bother finding my post. So I'll keep it short.
I don't doubt that natural ability is a must to excel in art. You can be taught all you like and, yes, you'll just reach a dead end eventually if you haven't got natural talent. I've witnessed it time and time again. But all I know is that being taught professionally has aided me a lot, I've grown to understand and appreciate art better, and am now able to think more outside-the-box, and actually execute my ideas better. So you can think whatever about art schools, but I have personal experience and can honestly say it's aided me a lot.
