Description
***Edit 10/19/08***Really nothing too major, just looking at this one again and changed the face and the leg a bit.
***Original Submission 11/3/05***
Ok, I know, a little late for baseball season, but this is one of the final pieces for the 2006 calendar. The uniform is based off of the old AAGPBL (All American Girls Professional Baseball League) uniforms. I don't know if there was ever a team with the colors of blue and yellow, but it seemed like a nice combination for that fresh spring feel. This will either be March or April, I haven't decided %100 yet.
The AAGPBL, despite the uniforms, was actually a pretty big step forward for women in the 20th century. They really stepped up the the plate as it were (no punn intended) and really pushed the envelope as much as Rosie the Riveter in a visible, iconographic way that people could really see.
A little trivia for you: if you look real closely there on her sleeve, the patch reads R-G GPBL, RG standing for Retro Girl
Medium: original sketch vectored in Illustrator

I love it! The new calendar is something that I have been waiting for eagerly all year! And doesn't baseball season start in April? So it would be more appropiate for April, yes?

She makes me think of the old disney short cartoon,Casey at the Bat, the second one where he has like 5 daughters. Now that i think of it, I think they're outfits were yellow and blue! It was cute.

"We are the members of the All American League. We come from cities near and far. We've got Canadian, Irish ones and Sweds, we're all for one, we're one for all, we're all American."
I might have butchered a few lines there, but you get the point. A League of Their Own was what made me love women's baseball. Great pic, Queeenie. ^_^

A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN!
lol seriously one of my more favorite movies evar, I lurve GINA DAVIS (I got to meet her too, she is awesome). This is so cute! That'd be sweet if you did a Rosie the Riveter one too, but not like how she was originally drawn...the face of a woman with the obvious torso of a man.

I had been thinking about doing that, something more along the lines of Swingshift Cinderella in the old Tex Avery cartoon...but my WAC girl comes first. I've had that one sketched out for over a year and just never had the time to get her done.

Hee...I immediatly thought of the movie "A League of Our Own." Ultimate baseball/chick/nostalgia flick.
I love the pose you used here, and the coy little expression on her face. And the bubblegum adds something that's just...perfect.

Okay, this is a really lame question but I am working on my digital painting and I was wondering what you used to get those texture lines on the green background. Hurray ignorance!
Otherwise, cute piece, and your color scheme was very well chosen!
Thanks.

Sorry it took me so long to answer this, it's a custom brush I made in Photoshop. Just line up a bunch of dots together, staggering the spacing and sizes a bit, then convert it to a brush.

So much love...when I was in middle school, our softball teams were named after the AAGPBL teams, so you've tapped into the nostalgic part of my brain with this one. And, of course, I love retro girls!

Haha, love it! I never get tired of your Retro style pieces. The first thing I though of when I saw this was the movie "A League of their Own" with Tom Hanks and Rosie O'Donell(sp?). Wee, you're doing another calendar!

Here's a little bit of trivia you would be interested in -- in 1990, I went to a Houston Astros vs. Atlanta Braves game. The game winning, 2 out 2 RBI double was hit by pinch-hitter Casey Candaele (to win the game off Cy Young Winner Tom Glavine 2-0). Turns out that Casey's mom, Kelly Candaele was not only a star player in the AAGPBL, but co-wrote "A League of Their Own," about her experiences. The Houston media guide said "If teammates tease Casey Candaele about throwing like a girl, he won't mind!"

I really like thes Pin-up-50's-style series, these retro girls are very cute and very stylised !! It reminds me the looong dissertation I did for my master in University... (about image of US women and Walt Disney and Tex Avery cartoons)
Meanwhile, I would LOOOOVE to see a baseball play, even in real or on TV... I never saw anything of that kind v___v

Hmmm... Any inspiration from Madonna's character in 'A League of Their Own'? It reminded me of her because she has dark hair and she's blowing gum. Just thought I'd ask. Lovely piece, I always thought the uniforms were cute.
