detail: [link]Have I ever mentioned how much I love bats? I remember watching Sesame Street when I was little and the Count singing a song with cute little foam muppet bats and I just fell in love
That aside, this started out as something completely different, but halfway through with the sketch, I decided why not and went this route. I swear, it was cursed through, as when I wanted to scan the sketch was when I discovered cat killed the scanner and then after getting the new scanner, I couldn't find my vellum...but in any case, it's done now and I'm happy, so I guess none of that matters
As for the painting, besides going back to look at some Mucha's again, I was looking at some of the artwork from the 'Miso Pretty' cosmetics and noticing how they were using such precise and resrtained color palattes. In any case, I decided to be a little more restrained than I sometimes am and I'm pretty happy with how it worked in this case. That won't always be the way I want to go, but definately something I'll need to consider when I start to paint from now on.
Medium: lineart-Col-erase brown on vellum, painting done in Photoshop and Painter. Texture is papyrus I scanned.

Do you start with the blue base color and then pull the highlights out from that?

Your art always amazes me. They just express such feeling and emotion, and are always, always beautiful. From this picture I can almost feel the evening and hear the night sounds, and I just feel really, really content.

I love it, it's a beautiful piece. What I'm absolutely impressed by is the colours and how you blended them together. The colour choice, when I look at itm makes me think purely of oxidized copper, or some other metal that changes in chemical reaction
The bats are just adorable! I could just pinch their cheeks and go "wowowowowoaaawwwww!"
However, a couple things are bothering me about the picture, and it's her hands and feet, but primarily the feet. It looks a bit too unnatural to fit with the rest of the painting. I just feel like it's a bit too curved inward and doesn't seem like it matches the rest of her. The hand that is holding the bat up looks kind of rubbery.
But, I do really love it. The tree is swept up in a beautiful pattern and I love how you positioned the stars over her head. It's great! ^^

Mucha influences many great artist.
I loved John R. Neill illustrations for the Oz books when I was a child,
Much of his influence came from Mucha.

In the city where I live, we have a huge bridge under which thousands of Mexican Freetailed Bats live. It's like a tourist attraction, people go hang around at dark to watch all the bats come streaming out from under the "Bat Bridge" and flying off into the night... whoa, now I feel like I need to do some bat artwork of my own.
