Description
Happy New Year everyone!Well, it's been the new year for a little while now, but this is my first piece of the new year, so it still counts...I think...
Just a little tribute to the science fiction of yesteryear. Being the new year, I thought I try something a little bit different. I've always loved the Jules Verne 'Earth to the Moon' and '20,000 Leagues' antiqued kindof idea of science fiction, so I thought I'd try to go in that direction. (Also, I think I've been watching too much Sweeney Todd and reading too much League of Extrodinary Gentlemen
In either case, this is what came out and if I was a better writter, I feel like there's a whole story I could go into with her and a whole little adventuring team, but for right now, I think her name is Adelle (like a-doll, get it? Ok, not that funny, but still...) and while I haven't decided for sure if she is entirely mechanical or only partially, but I am leaning to the partial angle. It's all steam powered and clockwork-like mechanisms, so she needs to stop for minor adjustments every now and again, but she manages. I thought it would be fun if she carried around a little case with tools and other attachments she could use in different situation. Just pop off a hand and attach a wrench or a drill or knife, whatever the situation calls for.
And no, I didn't stay entirely acurate with the clothing again, the hat is really more civil war and the bodice was inspired off of a photo I have in a book of the Princess of Wales in 1874, but I thought it worked right for the theme.
At any rate, I've prattled on a lot, really just started this as a single illustration, but we'll see if I do anything else with it.
Media: line art-brown Colerase on dura-lene, painting done in Photoshop and Painter, texture is scanned papyrus paper.
Sorry again for the larger watermark, but as some of you know, I've been having trouble with people taking and using for auction and other such things without permission, so just a nescessary evil.

Right before I saw this, I was thinking about steam powered trains.

Very interesting. She would fit in well with the League of Extrodinary Gentlemen. I'd like to see more of her. ^_^

Oh, I love this so much. Lately I've been craving seeing more steampunk-related media, and it's been popping out of the woodworks (in the best way possible).
The colour scheme is great. Well done.

youre good
I like it how she looks all pretty and delicate but then you look closer and realize shes got machine parts; it creates a semi-shocking contrast
I love it

You should come into Second Life and visit the steampunk city of New Babbage.
The theme is very much turn of the century science fiction ala Jules Verne, HG Wells, and the Leauge. You could even create this character as your avatar and be her in-world.
"Steam Powers the Grid" Salazar Jack
If you ever do take a trip to Second Life, you can usually find me in New Babbage under the name Skusting Dagger.

Yeah, i love that type of stuff. I think that steam power cyborgs & robots are the coolest. Makes them seem more real.

Which League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are you reading? Vol. 1, Vol. 2 or the newest one that's (as far as I can tell) 20th Century people investigating the League?

I haven't read the most recent one but I have to say I was pretty put off by the second one. What is the story of the 3rd one?

If you want, I can come up with a storyline for you. I've been writing a lot recently.
Wow, I never really grasped the concept that sci-fi was old, yennoe? I always thought sci-fi was a more recent thing with robots and totally disregarded the old clockwork style. I feel like a really bad sci-fi fan now... I love the use of brown in this piece; it brings out the antiquity.
