Description Can you tell I've been reading Sandman again lately?

Well, certain people complain that I go on and on too much in my descriptions, so I'll do my best to keep this brief This started as just a sketch of Death (most notably from the Sandman comics, but popping up here and there in the Vertigo universe) in more of a Victorian look, but then I wanted to get Cavendish (her teady bear) into it, too, so from there, the whole scene kindof built itself.
Please forgive the historical mismatch that is her dress. That style bustle doesn't really go with the styling in the bodice or skirt, but ever since I saw it on an old dress at LACMA years ago, it would seem I work it in whenever I can and yes, it would be difficult to bend like that in a corset, but that's what artistic license is for. She is Death, after all

What was that I said about keeping this short...? Oh well, I'll leave figuring out all the symbolism to you, have fun and enjoy

Medium: Lineart brown drafting lead on vellum, painting done in Photoshop and Painter.

The character of Death is copyright Neil Gaiman.

I dunno sandman, but once again, that is completely irrelevant to enjoying your artwork. I love the composition and the clothing and the posing... it's all so sweet and strange gothic cuteness

That is a very sweet piece, and, as per your usual, wonderfully done.
Ha, anachronisms... meh... I've just had to illustrate a story I set in Tudor times, more or less... and there was a couch in it, so I look up Tudor-style furniture... and paint it in... and when the teacher comments on it being wrong, and I explain, he says "Yes... that's a Tudor couch in the same way that Goth kids are Gothic, you know?" :mortified:
Not everyone has a professional illustrator's eagle eye, though! (Not, mind you, that that's any excuse for sloppy research. rar.)
And Death is such a lovely character.

Who's complaining that you say too much? Ought to have things thrown at them, they ought. After all, the trend is to say nothing when really some small frame of reference would make their entire effort make some slight sense as they intended it to do. You artistic types just don't seem to appreciate directly communicating. As such you're rather refreshing, but it wouldn't do for me to go into that here.

(then there's the whole, 'Well, who's to say she's actually wearing a corset...' approach... For a more subtle macabre. Thanks for the evil thought, ma'am.)

Vellum, eh? Well, even if it doesn't show through in this deviantART rendition, the material is awfully appropriate for the subject matter, I'd just like to say. As for anything else, sorry, but I'm useless, ma'am. Glad to see sommat from you though.

Hey, Death doesn't have to worry about stuff like breathing, right? *VBG* So she can bend any way she wants to. Corsets weren't *that* rigid...at least I don't think they were. Haven't worn one myself. ^_~

Be that as it may, the dress is lovely, and so is the pic!!

[and you can natter on all you *like* in your comments! **nods firmly**]
