Description And so she held her latern high aloft
a beacon in the ebbing night.

*EDIT 2/25/05*: I brought down the contrast so it's a bit closer to the original painting. Unfortunately, you loose some of the color to the tree branches, but was the best balance I could manage.

Last semester, I took a class on the history of print making and the whole first half was dedicated to Japanese prints. This semester, I have the same professor again for history of women artists and while I was waiting for class to start a few weeks ago, I started sketching. The Japansese prints were still fresh in my mind, but then thought I'd give the idea a bit of a twist.

There's some important iconography in here that is easy to miss if you don't know what to look for. First, her kimono is crossed the oposite direction one would normally wrap a kimono. This is the way it would be wrapped for a burrial shroud. Second, the longer sleeves such as on this kimono are for younger women. I thought it was appropriate to make the embodyment of death an adolescent as death is child-like and arbitrary by nature. Also, being a spirit being and god-like, I toyed with the idea of giving her the layered kimono of a noble, but decided against it since death knows no class. Her hair is part styled, part loose since death is order and chaos all at the same time. The rest I think speaks for itself.

I have not fully decided if she is truly death, or a servant of death, or even just a wandering soul. I think that's something best left to the viewer, anyway

Medium: Gouache paint on bristol board, inking done with silver acrylic ink and Gelly Roll pen. The border is scanned papyrus paper. Details of the face and kimono can be found here: [link]

note: I chose Fantasy over the Macabre/Horror gallery for this as by devArt's definition, that catagory is for pieces reflecting the horrors of death, pain, fear, etc and I don't really think there is anything horrific about this.

Beautiful! I love the wash-effect and the flowing color.

Funny, this quarter I've been studying Japanese prints, too, though it was for Art History. I thought I was losing it when i first saw this.

Very interesting symbolism, i like it that you put so much thought into your art. The little white flower type details on her dress that you can see in the detail shot are a nice touch

The black kominio certainly is customary to the theme of death. It's often wore at Japanese wakes too if I'm not mistaken. Plus the latern is a good symbolism of guiding the souls to the next life I think. Falling sakura (cherry blossoms) are also good symbols of life drifiting slowly away. Perhaps it is a theme of death. But nevertheless it's a very beautiful piece of work. Well lit and painted keeping tradition with asiatic brush strokes. I like it. ^__^

A new twist on the old skeleton-with-scythe. I love seeing the gentler side of mortality, and here done in a style I love. I also noted the falling blossoms, some more iconography, I'm guessing.

Very peaceful, and yet death oriented...the choice in folding the kimono right over left was a nice touch. The grey kimono with a touch of lavender I particularly like. Lovely composition, all around.

This is absolutely beautiful - the amount of thought you put into the symbolism makes it even more so. Are you going to make this a print, at some point, perhaps? It would make a very lovely sympathy card design...

Wow... this is very cool! I just got back from ConDFW where there's a artist that works in traditional oriental brush painting and this just captures the same kind of mood in the muted colors and brushwork.
Well done!!

Aww, very cool. There's an artist at Comicon by the name of Andy Lee that does these beautiful sumi-e paintings. They're so energetic and expressive, I love his work.

I really, really like this piece. The composition is very striking, particularly with the matting to accentuate it. And the background I actually like, it has an almost waterfall-like quality that I find interesting and rather soothing. It fits with the tone of the piece. It's lovely and evocative.

GoblinQueeen In reply to persephohi [2005-02-26 00:22:46 +0000 UTC]

ooh, a waterfall, I like that I think it stems from my need for texture. I think that's part of what I love about the art of the 50's and 60's is that even in areas of essentially flat color, they would work in these tonal variations.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

persephohi In reply to GoblinQueeen [2005-02-26 03:21:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I love texture in backgrounds-- it's involving without being intrusive or overpowering. Makes it seem more polished, more finished than just flat color, I guess.

You put so much detail into your art but I don't think any of us really see it at first. I know I don't. I love the symbolism here, the way you use actual symbol from the chinese culture in the picture. And the hair really stand out to me. And you used a Gelly Roll? That's definitely something I haven't seen before. Overall, wonderful work. I'm faving this.
