First things first!

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE ASIAN TO BE A GOOD COSPLAYER!
I see this argument every time I click on a cosplay picture.
Here are a few good cosplayers that are NON ASIAN.

Convention Do's and Don'ts.

General disclaimer ;: these dos/don'ts are not meant to be offensive or rude in anyway shape or form. These are advice/tips to help you achieve your perfect costume/convention experience and can be taken literally or non-literally.

Do:

= Start on your costumes early. A month or two in advance.

= Set deadlines for yourself. While it can be stressful at times it'll help you stay on track and keep your progress steady.

= Always bring a good camera with you and plenty of film.

= Ask for permission to take photos and to hug/glomp people.

= Be creative, if you plan on doing originals or female versions of characters really be imaginative with the outfits. Don't just put on a dress and call it a version. Make sure the design fits the character and the series!

= Bring a repair sewing kit to conventions. Glue guns are a must for prop holders! You never know when it'll come in handy.

= Use the buddy system. Sometimes the places where cons are held aren't all that 5 star, the buddy system helps when you have to make a late night run or return to your hotel through sketchy areas.

= Exchange tips/advice or deviant pages/blogs. Network like a champ.

= Check con regulations to make sure your props/costumes are acceptable.

= Make friends and don't be a wall flower!

= Regularly check official boards/cosplay boards for meet up/photoshoot information.

= Invest in coolers and ice for late night snacking/drinks!

= If you're going to a Convention as a main character from a series meet up with some co-stars/supporting characters. Cosplay is good on its own but its better with company!

= Hotel locations near convenience stores modernly priced restaurants. This will help keep down food and drink costs.

= Stay hydrated. No one likes heat stroke or a trip to the hospital!

= Ration money, forget your wallet in your room or car. Check your Bank status after major purchases, keep a check book/balance book with you to keep track of your spending.

= Pick characters that are similar to yourself, it makes the cosplay better when you can adapt and relate to said character.

Don't:

= Use duct tape. While it may be magical, putting it on your shoes for a cosplay is not.

= Wear a costume that was put together in two hours, two days, or even two weeks unless you are a professional or you actually did an excellent job.

= Males, don't wear costumes that require you to shave if you refuse to. It ruins the illusion of the character that you've set out to portray.

= Pick characters that have revealing clothing if you don't have the body for it, are self conscious, or are doing it for the wrong kind of attention. Think of it like this, if you won't wear it in front of your grandmother, why would you wear it to a con in front of strangers?

= If you do wear revealing costumes do not complain about unwanted attention or being hit on by locals. Its going to happen whether you like it or not, be aware before hand.

= Just wear a costume to a character you know nothing about. Do some research! Its how the best cosplayers/cosplays are made.

= Please don't creep. No one likes a stalker!

= Don't act like you're better than another cosplayer or person just because you made your costume, are in a costume, ect. Conventions are for fun, not for tom douchery!

Sesshomaru Cosplay [link]
Is a lens that I found that is pretty helpful for costume makers. Remember for any costume do your RESEARCH. Find plenty of ref photos and study the character.

[link]
Buckled winkle pickers one of the best cosplay shoes. So close to his originals and pretty inexpensive I believe. Sold at Drac-in-a-box

www.Mehron.com Mehron
www.Kryolan.com Kryolan
These two above links are places for good quality body painting makeups.

[link]
For Sesshomaru makeup two pack refills are good. Cheery bomb red for cheeks, red for eyes and Dark blue, Dk.blue or DBL for moon, Wild orchid the last filler for a Just in case go with the purple moon.

This makeup was bought and tested by me and is a perfect match to Sesshomaru's [Anime]

Products that are good to go with using make up.

Barrier spray : [link]
A quality barrier spray that stops sweat. Misted before or after makeup use, before stops sweat underneath and after seals for the finished look and no run.

Foundation:
[link]
Foundation to hide the "I just shaved" look for a flawless finish. Good for a Sesshomaru cosplay as well as any other in general in general.

FOR WIG WEARERS:

If you happen to be wearing a bright coloured wig or white wig and are afraid of showing your hair underneath the first good way to reduce this is if you are a male you can go bald, too drastic?
Then for all a WIG CAP is a must. If your hair is long it is good to use knitted wig caps and to wrap hair around the head and pin it in place with bobby pins.

After hair is pinned, here is a product I have found that helps preventing coloured hair from sticking out.
[link]
Comes in silver or white.

If you’re doing a Sesshomaru play it’s good to go with the silver. It’s a SAFE and NON PERMINATE water based formula that covers the hair and will make sticking out hair LESS noticeable.

When the wig cap is on dab or stroke lightly around the edges of wig cap or hair line about half an inch into the hair to colour it. The hair will become less noticeable.

For those with COLOURED wigs such as purple, blue, green. Use the WHITE formula and do the same as above.
-Then take a bit of eye shadow in MATTE of the same colour as the wig and lightly brush it along the edges of your now whitened hair. Make sure that the shadow is of a NON-sparkling or pearlized kind and is a dull flat matte.

STYLING A WIG:

There are a few GOOD quality stranded wigs that sell and they are kanekalon, Eleora, toyokalon, and modlon. Human haired wigs are the best but expensive and stop at a certain length.

“ PART WIG” fibers are not good wigs at all so don’t buy them, they are usually poor quality.
Try to stick to reliable sellers and check out credentials if possible; also check out reviews or feedback.

When buying a wig check the quality as well as the assembly, make sure the wig will not fall apart. Double check sizing as well. Some go by Small, medium, and large.

When styling a wig important products to have are:
A wig brush
Wide tooth comb
Wig spray
Plenty of wig caps.
Hair spray or/and gel
Garnier Fructis Wetshine
Blow dryer

Only use salon professional products and nothing cheap or you will damage the wig. The Fructis Wetshine is a gloss spray, I have a small travel size bottle that I find good for travel, it gives the hair a quick shine boost and life while not being sticky or excessive. It also gives the wig or hair a nice fruity scent that last for hours. <3

When styling a wig use a generous amount of product but don’t go crazy. Treat it like real hair or you will damage it.

DO NOT use excessive hair gel or hair cement.
A little goes a long way when combined with sprays. Make sure to find a good hair spray that doesn't flake.

Take a small amount on your finger and rub it into your hands. Run your hands under cold water[for a couple of seconds] to further dilute to not damage but still do its job.
Or make sure the wig is damp or wet and gently work product in and style as needed.
Use hairspray to keep style.
Blow dry while holding the spike or curl. Do it low heat to not destroy the style.

Make sure the hair spray is not one that flakes off or gets OVERLY sticky or you could ruin your style.

For curly haired wigs, either buy them straight and style them yourself or get them curly styled already.
To curl a straight wig you need:
Curlers [plastic ones not the hot ones]
A blow dryer
Warm water
Bobby pins
Wide tooth comb
Hair spray

1. Wet the wig with warm water and rid any access water.

2. Part wig into sections like normal hair. Comb out section and roll it in the curler, pin and move on to the next one.

3. Repeat step two until the full wig, or just what you need is in curlers.

4. Make sure wig hair is still wet, if not mist it with warm to hot water.

5. Blow dry the hair dry on high but keep it far enough away so that it does not damage the hair.

6. Do this twice, step 4 and 5, and then remove curlers carefully. With Wide tooth comb; comb the hair gently through the curl once or twice if needed and there it is. Hair spray to hold style and done.

It’s better to wear the wig after styling being careful to put it on without mussing it up. It’s also easier to style it while on your head. After it might be good to use a bit of Hair sheen. Oil sheen that says OLIVE OIL on the front or Wig spray to get the luster you need.

For plays with SHORT hair if you have short hair that is around the same colour or length it is good to use YOUR OWN HAIR and not a wig. [Saves money]

If your hair is to your jaw and you’re doing a Kingdom Hearts Sora play, use your own hair and either get it professionally styled or have someone help you.

Styling Sora’s hair is pretty easy as long as you DON’T use a ton of gel or hair cement. Use an amount like above but part the hair first to help.
Do not do a straight part but a zig zag part it seems to keep it more natural.
Spike the hair use the gel more at the bottom or base of the spike then the top and use hair spray at the top to hold the point.

If you want to go with a more natural realistic look then tease the hair slightly and use a small amount of gel or hairspray to have this fly away but spiked look. Make sure it’s not TOO messy.

If you do not want to do this here are a few good sites for QUALITY cosplay wigs already styled that I have found so far:
[link]

For those looking for contacts:
[link]
This link is good for Sesshomaru contacts using the ones at the bottom of the page: Hazel Autumn Bella

Or if you want to get more than one pair with a discount here is JAPANESECANDY

This site features contacts for cosplays or just regular wear in prescription and non-prescription.
So don’t worries if you have two different prescriptions in each eye you can get a pair without any added fees at all; also if you buy more than one of one style they give discount. Sae-Chan is amazingly nice and friendly and if you have any questions she is sure to help.

I’ve found contacts on here good for:
Chii or Freya cosplays
Naruto plays and a few others.
[link]

Another site:
[link]
[link]
Colours Honey and Pure hazel are good for Sesshomaru cosplays and any with yellow to golden eyes and want to keep the RL but anime aspects of a character. While they are cheap I am not sure if they can be prescription or not.

COSPLAY SHOES:
[link]

Jennifer cosplay from Ebay has great cosplay shoes.
She even has a realistic version of Sora's shoes. I am not sure as of yet but I do think that they do custom orders for shoes. Not sure but you can always ask.

[link]
Sometimes they sell Bleach shoes and whatnot, but they are good for Naruto headbands, keychains and Akasuki Necklaces as well as others. Mask, and collectables.
If you’re wearing the bleach whickered sandals I suggest using a sealant at the bottom of some type or fitting them with rubber to keep them from breaking as you walk on the concrete. Otherwise stay indoors and check them every so often.

Commissions or costumes:
Cosplayhouse does quotes on commissions for outfits. I checked them out to see what you would get for some cosplays. They say 48 hours and they will get to you but its been more than three for me so I'm not all too sure. They can be pretty damn expensive sometimes.

Cosplayfu.com has some decent costumes. For those that can't afford to make from scratch or don't know how to sew its good to get premades and then taylor it to yourself and add or take from it as needed.

If you know people that sew its good to get them to help you. Also, taking it to a taylor is a cheap and professional way. Some may even do the costume for you. Ask around and see.

Head to the link at the bottom of this one, it'll take you to the second installment, a few tips on binding. but one can always suggest a compression vest, preferably a tri-top commpression shirt/vest. it works rather well.

If you have large breasts I suggest the tri-tops, if you have smaller I suggest light compression vest.

A friend of mine uses tri-top's for compression because she has large breast and also likes shaping. It works rather well.

Goddesofthemoon In reply to koneko321 [2010-05-27 00:03:15 +0000 UTC]

Sorry this is pretty late. For Axel its suggested that you style your OWN wig, because lets face it, most 'professionally' styled cosplay wigs are CRAP.

I actually have a really good friend of mine that made her Axel wig cosplay ACCURATE, now, I won't give away her secrets, obviously. But I can assure you everything you can do yourself with a bit of time and dedication and the right products.

Thats with a hairline too.
She uses a lot of GOT2BE I think thats what its called, freezing spray and a bit of gel. I hope that helps you a little.

not all cons require you to be 21, unless its like Yaoi con, or something like that, or if you're planning to stay in a room at the hotel. ive been going to cons alone at hotels since i was 12. They really dont care as long as u comply to all the rules. and if u mom is worried about u going alone its better to go to cons with friends. <3 i hope this helped

Goddesofthemoon In reply to garfield10125 [2010-02-22 17:00:42 +0000 UTC]

Thats a tough one. I'd believe the only way you can go is if your mother goes with you. Getting a hotel requires you be 21, having to show valid ID, picking up your con tickets also requires you have a valid ID.

Simply ask your mother, tell her its something you really want to do and you want to share/do it with her. Even if it is for a day its still a nice thing to share with ones parent.

I am having trouble thinking of someone to cosplay as. I want it to be from an anime i know and have watched, and a character i love. Two that i know i have things in common with are Rue from princess tutu but i don't want to wear her Kraehe outfit.(i'm modest x.x; and Suigintou from Rozen maiden... but.
It's hard to find good shoes for Suigintou, and i have low on money to make my own costume... plus i have long hair so it's hard to put in a wig cap, nor have i gotten anywhere near used to wearing contacts...

I don't know what to do or where to start... My boyfriend just suddenly got the grand idea for us to go to anime expo, but i am having troubles with a decent cosplay idea...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Goddesofthemoon In reply to doki-sama [2010-01-13 05:09:15 +0000 UTC]

Well, Modesty is good but if its something you want to do, do it. Besides if your going with your boyfriend, I'm sure he can bat all the crazed fanboys away. Rue also has more than one outfit so you can do the school girl version.

As for your dilemmas:
Start with picking your outfit and character.
I say go with the more simple one of the two.

If you can't afford to make your own, since I know it can sometimes be expensive you can always purchase one made though that probably won't help much. You can typically get one made off Ebay for around 50-120 dollars depending. ALWAYS check the shipping and make sure you aprrove of it. RESEARCH your potential commissioners, otherwise you can't complain if you get crappy product. I usually say if you can't find a seller that has the outfit made the way you like, look at ones similar and pick the one you like best and see about custom commissioning. Either way, just because your going to a convention doesn't mean you have to actually cosplay.

Having long hair isn't always bad either, is actually a major plus because depending on your hair colour you now have a wide array of female anime characters you can now play out.
For example, I used to have short brown/blackish hair similar to Haruhi from Ouran High school. I could have done her costume and not even had to go purchase a wig.

If you have natural eyes that go with the character just wear clear ones and if your not used to them start wearing them an hour a day until you are increasing an hour every day.

doki-sama In reply to Goddesofthemoon [2010-02-05 20:36:53 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for all the suggestions.

Sense the idea was sprung on me, i think i won't cosplay this year, and maybe next year. that way i have a long time to think of what i want to be.
This year though I will be dressing up with my boyfriend as these genderless creatures, just to freak people how. Tattered robes, masks, showing nothing of our figures. (I am just 5ft and he 6ft4) it's hard to explain. Though I hope I do get to doing it.

I have Naturally gray/blue/green eyes with hint of hazel.... haha.
And my hair is really love Blond hair. Slightly strawberry blond.
It is wavy and curly, but can be straightened or given ringlets.
So it's workable for a lot of things. So I suppose i should look around for a girl that's short, tiny, with long blond hair. With a personality i can act as. ; n ;

Goddesofthemoon In reply to doki-sama [2010-02-05 22:30:28 +0000 UTC]

Hmm.. Well, its a natural blond but you could probably do Lady Elizabeth from Kuroshitsuji.

Other blond characters with long hair.
You can be:

Deidara from Naruto
Sailor moon or Sailor Venus
Nanami Minase from Gyakutama 2
Chii and Freya from Chobits
Suujii Evansu from Valkyria Chronicales
Ino Yamanaka from Naruto
Sasha from Pita Ten
Misuzu from AIR
Misa Amane from Death Note
Rikku from Final Fantasy
Ranpha Franboise from Galaxy Angel
Coco from Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch
Luchia from Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch
Excel from Excel Saga
Eri Sachawika from School Rumble
Mitsuki's adult form from Full Moon Wo Sagashite
Princess Zelda from Zelda
Renge from Ouran High School Host Club
Kate Scott from Trinity Blood
Milly Ashford from Code Geass
Rangiku Matsumoto from BLECH
Tsunade and Temari from Naruto
Sir Integra Hellsing from Hellsing

There are a lot more. Lol, you but here is a starting list. ^ ^-

* ~ * I am a natural blond?

and I would love to do Chii... but my hair is not yet to the back of my calf's. (which is where I am growing it out to. so Maybe when I am actually around the age chii/freya appear it will be.)
It is close to the length of Misuzu, and I think i could do Sasha from pita ten.
You're way to helpful, How did you become such a nice person? ^ ^-

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Goddesofthemoon In reply to doki-sama [2010-03-17 02:54:31 +0000 UTC]

What is the length of your hair now?

Most Chii or Freya cosplayers don't actually have calf long hair, most don't even wear wigs that long because of tangling problems. From what I gather most wear their hair to about 3 inches past the shoulders or mid back length. You don't really need the "correct" length of hair to have an AWESOME cosplay, thats all ridiculous airs.

Either way since you are a natural blond you now have a WIDE range of blond female characters you can cosplay as and that opens a LOT of doors.

I honestly couldn't tell you, I'm really not that nice of a person. I started "The Cosplay Guide" in an effort to prevent those Good Vs. Bad cosplay threads and forums because I've noticed that many just don't know where to get what they need or have the resources others do; or people just don't get the advice from people to help. So I figured doing this could prevent future "bad" cosplays. If anything I'm being arrogant in ways, however, I do believe it unintentionally makes me 'nice.' So I suppose thats how it is.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

doki-sama In reply to Goddesofthemoon [2010-04-11 05:32:06 +0000 UTC]

My hair is to my lower back. So by your logic and everyone else's (with chii cosplay) My hair is well past long enough.
Call me easily distracted but i think i want to cosplay as cossette from la portrait de la petit cossette. I have a face like her, blond hair and just need to get my hair cut so i have the style of bangs and side locks like her. Then simply her goth style lolita dress and I think I would be good. Sense I am 5ft, i think my height fits well for "petit" cossette to.
I just need to get the stuff for it and patch together things.

I think you are being modest. ^ ^ You're nice enough to want to prevent the good vs. bad. Though I would have most likely done the same and I have been known to be a foul thing for years now, so I suppose one good deed does not make you righteous. I'll believe you when you say you are not that nice just for the sake that you may actually be a vixen. haha. (not an insult) As for arrogance, it really is not something you can prevent. At least you are proud and had the guts to go as far as you have. I'm sure many have benefited from your service of information. I know i have, speaking with you in general about it gave me more confidence then i had before. I look forward to dressing up now and lack panic over whom i am going to be, thanks to you.

What colour are your natural eyes? And in this one there is an ebay seller that makes the shoes you are looking for, but if you still want to make them I'll see what I can find to help you.

My eyes are brown; I'd like to buy them off ebay, but I'd find it rather awesome if I could do it myself, I would like however to have the ebay thing as a backup ^^ You are very helpful >w<

Told you I'd get back to you about those Riku [KH] shoes. While, I can not seem to find a working tutorial I do recommend checking out this site: [link]

Look through their tutorials on boots and shoes and you just might be able to adapt some of them into working Riku shoes

Since you have dark eyes you have to stick with contacts that are for dark eyes.

Freshlook has contacts that are perfect. Freshlooks Colorblends are best.
[link]
You can even get a free trial, though you MUST use that at your eye doctors office and I believe if you have to pay fees they don't cover that. You just get the contacts for free. So if your just using them for cosplay one pair should last you a year as long as you constantly change the liquid like your supposed to.

Japanese candy sells good ones too.

Sae-chan is a wonderful seller and they do percriptions as well. The Geo's are specifically sold for Dark eyes so its very good to use as well, those come in individual vials. If your unsure you can look at her sights feedback and if you have more questions just email her. Shes very good at responding.

As for the shoes it'll take me some time to check up on them.

it's good to be a girl, you can do cosplays of girls and guys, while guys ''can'' only make cosplay of guys, why?cause if they try, they'll look too muscle-like, anyway, nice tips

Not really, I've seen plenty of guys do a good male cosplay of a female character. Its all about how you put it together. Like I believe I have a picture of a male cosplaying a Sailor scout. It wasn't bad at all, it was very good, and you can tell he didn't half arse it.

I saw a guy cosplaying Princess Sereina, he'd taken the wig off and he was cussing out his friend. It was pretty funny, actually.

There was another dude dressed as Mikuru in the bunny-girl suit from Haruhi Suzumiya. It was terrifying. He asked for my picture and a hug.
A rather tramatizing experiance for a first-time cosplayer/con-goer.

Wow, this helped sooo much, thank you~ I think I'm going to start binding my chest when I cosplay guys, I was wondering if that bugged anyone XD.

I do have two questions though-

Do wigs have sizes or is it a kind of one-size-fits-all thing?

And the wig I want to order just says Japanese Synthetic fiber, but it looks pretty realistic. Do you think the quality is still good?

Goddesofthemoon In reply to sugarmaestro [2009-09-01 17:02:15 +0000 UTC]

The fiber all depends on what company your getting it from, most japanese synthetic's are actually just kanekalon fiber with sometimes synthetic ones put in. while this isn't entirely bad for anything longer than just above shoulder length anything past I really wouldn't bother. Double check with the seller and ask for the specific fiber name.

And sometimes wigs do come in sizes but more than likely it is a large size wafted lace wig cap with a bra like strap on the inside so that you may hook it and wear the wig tighter. This is a more proffesional way.

What most people don't know, however; is that you can make your own human haired wig for a lot cheaper. more expensive than a fake fiber depending on the varying length but much thicker and fuller then a fake one and the life span depending on how well it is made well makes up the extra money spent than that of a fake one. Human hair sells up to about 18' I believe, depending on what wig specialty store you are going to and the cost is anywhere from 5 to 15 dollars a set of tracks. You only need about two to three packs of it to do one wig depending on how closely lined you want the tracks to be.

If you would like to know how to make your own instead of purchasing one, which isn't all that hard. Than I don't mind noting you the instructions. But more than likely it'll be easier if you are afraid of messing up to just purchase one. The fibers listed are some of the best, just make sure that when wearing the wig you use a bit of wig specific styling gel at the bottom so that the fibers don't get too unmanageable.

If you could note me the instructions I guess it wouldn't hurt. The con isn't until next year, and if I can get it down it would probably look much better.

Thanks so much for the help~
