Ah, the wonders of a quality scanner.

Much cleaner upload of everything from my entry for 's contest.

NOTES FROM PREVIOUS ENTRIES:

Because I didn't have a lot of time to create an ideal submission, my version of Sayaka is slightly different than the official;, her ponytails are fluffier and I also ended up cutting her bangs a little to let her eyebrows show.

So I think I better get around to introducing the friend in question. Meet Daniel "Dane" Rogers. Dane walks dogs for the residents of a nearby high-rent neighborhood. He also does odd jobs for them.

Dane used to be a bouncer at a high-end nightclub until he was hospitalized by a fight with a thug who'd gotten past security on the arm of a major patron of the club. After getting good and drunk, the thug grew upset when he learned the lady would not be forthcoming with certain favors, and Dane stepped in. He's a practiced fighter, but knife fights in crowded quarters are no joke. In gratitude, the lady offered him a favor and he asked for some kind of non-violent work. Dane tries to be classy, but fashion has been a learning curve for him. Spiky hair, goatee, earring, and a bowtie are about as good as it gets for him.

I imagine Dane's somewhere in his early twenties, no more than 24. He was almost purely an ad hoc creation. I came up with his nickname first, and then expanded that to Daniel. His last name came up almost right after that, after another pretty cool guy who works with a dog.

I wanted to try and keep the characters in canonical outfits, but Sachiko really only has workout gear. So she's out jogging with the kids.

I've (obviously) never done a lot of drawing for dogs, so this was a learning curve of mine.

I wanted very much to make this a story that could be understood without dialog, but just in case:
1. It's a nice day at the park and Sayaka is enjoying a hot dog and people watching... and then she notices someone is watching her.
2. Immediately taken with the adorable little furball, Sayaka offers the pooch a chunk of her hot dog.
3. The puppy, who really likes hot dogs, cozies right up in Sayaka's lap.
4. Sayaka is approached by the local dog catcher and immediately makes up a story about how Kyuuchi is totally her dog, no lie.
5. Sayaka relaxes and takes a breath after the dog catcher finally departs. Her heart won't stop beating.
6. "Ah! There you are!" Sayaka is immediately accosted by another man with plenty of dogs and fears for Kyuuchi's fate.
7. When in doubt, run. When running from a pack of excitable dogs, run faster.
8. Sayaka sacrifices her hard-bought hot dog and drink ($7!) to evade her pursuers and protect Kyuuchi.
9. Free at last? Sayaka hides behind a tree for safety. Kyuuchi gets a nice belly massage from her pounding heart.
10. The Dog Catchinator catchinates up to Sayaka and Kyuuchi. Sayaka's heart just can't stand the panic.
11. Please, Mr. Dog Catcher, don't hurt him! I'll give him a good home, I swear!
12. You- you're not a dog catcher? You WALK them?
13. I'm so sorry for the misunderstanding! Please forgive me!
14. Dane, now that he's cleaned the smoothie off of his face can't help but notice that "Kyuuchi" is doing pretty good for a supposed dognapping victim.
15. Dane's almost done with his rounds, so if she'd like, Sayaka can finish walking the dogs with him.
16. Dog-walking is usually solitary work, so the opportunity for conversation is a nice surprise.
17. Except nobody's watching the dogs, so Harley, the Great Dane, sticks his massive snout into the most interesting thing -- Sachiko's baby stroller.
18. Sachiko wonders where Sayaka was -- she wasn't waiting at the bench.
19. But then Sachiko notices Sayaka's picked up a friend.
20. Thank you so much for being kind to my dear little sister. We are in your debt.
21. Sachiko goes back to jogging around with the babies.
22. Wait a minute. Who's missing.
23. Kyuuchi is apparently developing quite a taste for the pretty girls.
24. Sayaka just got dumped. By a stupid mutt.
25. "Maybe she smells like hot dogs." "You're horrible!"
