Description
We had holed ourselves up in an administration building around Themys Plaza, the city center that was located entirely around a large man-make lake. At least there was a source of water. Occasionally one of the group would be sent out to get some, until the imps got wise and started posting snipers overlooking the thing. Exchanges of gunfire were common, but it was more of just taking pot shots out a window at some building some 500 yards away. So long as the AA's were up and the surface to orbit 'Lance' guns were active in the region, their ships couldn't get close and their air couldn't effectively bomb us out.Food ran out before the ammunition did. What little we had to drink came from rainwater, or in the off chance we managed to scavenge out of the building. If you could find an imp with a backpack you could get a ration pack that would last you a bit. Tasteless nutrient paste, a brick of protein, and filtered water packs. One MRE was to last a single soldier a day. We generally made them last three. Sometimes cannibalism of the corpses would be presented, but none of us wanted to be the ones to do it. So we starved for a bit.
So we endured shelling instead. Occasionally one or two rounds would hit the building, but we were all mostly hiding in the basement. For weeks we'd listen in on the radio chatter, hearing other groups talk about their survival. We knew the imps were listening too, so nobody would say their locations or group size, but it was nice to know there were others out there. There was a group across the lake at the visitors center for a while too we were in contact with. Occasionally would see one on the lower floors waving at us, or would help exchange gunfire on approaching imperials on our side. They fell silent 2 weeks ago and we haven't seen them since.
In the end there was just 5 of us left. An entire building to ourselves in a dying city. The Lance stopped firing and the AA's fell silent. Imps took them out at some point during the siege.
And then came another offer. They'd been trying to get us to surrender for weeks now. Every once and a while an imperial would come over a loudspeaker offering surrender and food. They knew we'd been starving but it wasn't until the guns went down that we realized there was nothing left to hold out on and defend. Allies weren't coming. The imps stopped sending men. I think they knew it was smarter to just wait us out. So we took a vote in that basement. 4 to 1. So we waved a little white flag made up of paper stapled to a broom stick we found in the upper levels of the office. Held it outside a massive hole in the wall for the snipers to see and then took our chances stepping outside. We were met by the imps, demanding we came out with no weapons and with our hands up.
Our war ended there. Part of me was glad we surrendered. At least the suffering stopped.
