Halle, 2775. Second year of the siege.

They had been stuck behind enemy lines for a few days now. The line shifted so quickly it enveloped everything and everyone as the Terran army withdrew to stronger fighting positions or to prioritize other surface-to-orbit defenses. Scavenging up food from dead comrades MRE's or scavenging the enemy's. Occasionally a storefront wouldn't have been looted by civilians in hiding and they might be able to score a can of beans or carrots, but they'd been well to ration what they had.
The days felt longer and the number of them dropped from where they were at the start. Twelve initially. Now only down to six with one wounded. A far cry from being completely wiped out, but the pain of losing those they had trained and fought with for over a year now had drained morale. Regardless, they pushed on, carefully attempting to avoid patrols, looters, or overhead UAV. Through tight alleys and inside stretches of buildings. Out of sight and out of mind.

The chance for escape came when they managed to make contact with a nearby unit, about five miles from their position. They were being airlifted out and pleaded for one of the lifts to pick them up if they could, marking an area with white smoke as they did. It was all they really had to mark their ground. As the airlift came in, they rushed to prepare to go before the enemy's attention was taken, but it was already too late. THey would have to fight their way out one last time to go home
