Description Over 2 billion souls. Hushed in a month. Echoed cries of pain and anguish lost in vacuum and in fire. Voices silenced, and souls forever lost, never to find their way home. The look of terror and panic forever frozen on the faces of the dead. Forever floating in their eternal grave. Never returned home. Lost looking for a way back. A constant reminder to the cost of war, yet a reminder often gone unremembered, or uncared for.
History, and the cycle repeat itself.

Man is eternally at war.

-------------------------------------------

For three weeks thousands of vessels waged an unending battle. Fighting to bring an end to a bloody war. Soldiers and sailors fighting to bring a quick end to the war so that they could go home to their families again. So that they could return to a normal life. It became known as one of the largest naval battles the free colonies had ever seen. Dreadnoughts, Battleships, Cruisers, and so on. The Empire made it's last bitter stand here, the break the wave of juggernauts that were the Staevik fleet. The numbers were fairly close. The Staevik armada pushed forward to crush the Azen Empires Naval might, and the Azen mustered a defensive, fighting over a rock in space.

A rock that would become their tomb.

Throughout the weeks of combat The Staevik navy would call command, requesting a withdrawal fearing the cost of victory far too great. A call that would fall on deaf ears and overconfident minds. This was it. The government was sure of it. This would be their finest hour and their moment to shine in the light for all of the colonies and Nations to see.

But when the final round was shot, and the last Imperial ship destroyed. There were so few left to be able to land on the planet. To liberate the now fortified world. The Navy was ordered to liberate the planet, and use it as a forward base for infantry operations. But who was left? What marine forces were capable? They couldn't do it. They wouldn't do it. Not another Staevik life to add to the meat grinder. The Admiral was dead, and a lower ranking of the Admiralty was in charge. A young Colonel Garborick was all that remained of Marine command. Having seen almost all of his men die trying to take the fortress moon surrounding the planet he knew there was nothing left for the main invasion. Emotion was what drove the command. Not logic. The Empire had killed everyone. And he would not let another one of his countrymen fall to the Empire. The next week was a constant barrage from orbit. Everything was expended. When missiles and bombs ran out, they started scavenging the hulls of dead vessels and using their ammunition. And when they became impatient, they just used a dead ship. The planet was purged of all life. Every last civilian. Shelters were hit until they cracked open and the flames scorched the insides. Nothing but dust and ash remained of what once was life. And with that, what remained of the vengeful Staevik armada left.

Markai marked the end of any ability of the Empire to wage an offensive, but it was the nail in the coffin for the Staevik Republic. The Massacre that ensued angered the population. It angered the military. And the survivors of the fleet came back horribly scarred, mentally and physically. Twice they would call upon the government for a ceasefire, and again, the government ignored. Ignoring everything about the massacre of Markai and still pushing forward. Ignoring the loss of manpower, they began to field those that would have normally been seen too young to fight. Becoming so caught up in what a victory would look like they never stopped to see what they were doing to their population. Never noticing the strife and hardship, the grief and sorrow that the conflict was leaving.

Markai was a tomb, yes. But it also was was marked the end for a Nation. The Staevik Republic truly died here, not after the war ended.

Thousands of ships still litter it's orbit. The dead left to their eternal slumber

Pretty sure with lack of oxygen or really any way of life living in the vacuum of space that they can't rot because no bacteria is there to eat the corpse

So there are tons of never rotting flesh drifting in all directions in space till... the thought of bodies raining on a nearby planet makes me chuckle.

This scene would leave any rescuers that saw this breathless.

I'll say! They'd be overwhelmed!
No rescue ships would come Though. As soon as the poor bastards were sucked from their ships into the vacuum, they're dead.

The planet serves now as a scrapyard, as scavengers fly through the wrecks, taking weapons, disassembling ships for scrap, or trying to refit old ships into working order.

That would be quite a somber scene for any rescue ships.

What rescue ships? They're dead and a recovery effort to go all over the planets orbit collecting dead bodies was deemed too costly to care

It's Master work anyway.

Oof, now this is a pleasant surprise; had no idea you were working on something so ambitious. Incredible storytelling my dude, and the level of detail along the damaged bulkheads, corridors, and various other pieces of debris is fantastic. You can practically hear the eerie silence from here.
Excellent work on those crewman uniforms too, I'd love to see a turnaround of that sometime.

Absolute silence leads to sadness. It is the image of death. - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Probably won't see those crew uniforms unless I do some more past history images of the old Staevik Republic

thanks though man, glad you liked it

Stunning work. I think this is your best image yet, in terms of story telling and dynamic composition, second only maybe to your speeder shootout image.

"My dearest love,

I will admit that I am nervous and afraid. Struck stiff with terror, even. The commanders say, that we are going into combat against the Empire tomorrow at Markai. They say, with hope glinting in their eyes, that we might see the end of the war tomorrow. Azen is stretched too thin to hold back the fleet, we've been told. It's a time of glory, and feelings of strength. But all I want, my love, is to be at home with you. I want to lay beneath the old shade tree to watch the clouds go by with you at my side, so that we can while the hours away and laugh at our bad jokes together. I want to spend our days in happiness, in a world where we could have remained at peace and the war never begun. But we can't. It happened, and I volunteered. So here I am, awaiting the call to action stations when the fleet jumps. Destiny calls, I heard one of the Petrovs say. But is it bad that I don't want destiny? I just want peace, so I can come home. So we all can come home. If anything should happen, should the Empire prove too tough or our guns not enough, I want you to know that I love you. I always have, and I always will. You are the light of my life, and I will do anything to return to you.

Yours, Dmitri."

I have no word to describe it; save powerful and meaningful. And it sounds like the Republic is going to find themselves in the middle of a civil war and with wolves at the door with their naval and marine might shattered.

goeliath In reply to BOH-Games [2017-08-31 04:24:43 +0000 UTC]

The Staevik Republic in the setting has long since collapsed, being replaced with a totalitarian government who hides it's nation behind an isolationist ideology and an iron curtain. The only memory of them is graveyards like these

BOH-Games In reply to goeliath [2017-08-31 12:00:47 +0000 UTC]

So many dead and little came of it.

The Staevik sure do know how to screw it up by the numbers.

Well, their sacrifice may have been costly, but in the end the Imperial navy was crippled beyond any ability to wage an offensive, allowing the Staevik's ally during the first war, the Terrans to be able to win the rest of the war
