Description “She’s… You should go talk with her. She’s in the medbay.”

Garrus nodded before heading in, to find Kira examining her reflection with a frown. There was something odd about how she looked, but it took him a moment to realise that she didn’t have her colony marks.

“Are you okay?” he asked as he went to sit down next to her.

She nodded. “Yeah. I’m fine…” He didn’t quite believe her tone.

“Why have you covered up your colony marks?”

“I… I haven’t covered them up. I got rid of them.”

He was surprised by that. “Kira… why?”

“Because it’s not my clan!” she told him, shaking her head. “I’m just some random human, wearing their colony marks. It’s not right, Dad.”

He responded by wrapping his arm around her. “Maybe not. But I know how much they meant to you.”

She nodded. “I just… I’ve always had colony marks. You raised me turian, Dad. I enlisted at fifteen, I served my time in the Hierarchy. I mean, for Spirits’ sake, these stupid Cerberus gene mods even have turian DNA in them! And, yet, without my colony marks, I’m just a human. I… I don’t feel like me.”

“You’re still you, Kira. You’re still my daughter. No one can take that away from you. And I’ll talk with my father. You’re a part of my family, and my clan. Then you can have Vakarian markings again.”

Kira smiled sadly at him. “Thanks, Dad. But… he’s not going to accept me. He had to in my timeline, he doesn’t have to here.”

“I’m still going to try, Kira. I love you, and I’m sure he will too. He just needs a little time to process all of this.”

“I’m sure you’re right,” she lied. “Thank you, Dad. For trying to make me feel better.”

“That’s what I’m here for,” he figured. “Plus, who knows. Maybe blue markings won’t be your taste by the time I convince my father. Maybe white ones will be.”

She smiled a little at that, blushing. “I thought you disapproved of me and Nihlus.”

“Kira… He makes you happy. And I want you to be happy. Just… remember that if he hurts you, I will have absolutely no problem killing him.”

“You say that about all my boyfriends,” she figured, rolling her eyes. “And, he’s not going to hurt me, Dad. He loves me.”

“I know, Filia. I know…”

This is a scene from the end of chapter 46 of Let's Try This Again (a Mass Effect fanfic), featuring Garrus and my OC, Kira. fav.me/d7faajb

If Mass Effect crossed with Back to the Future sounds like something you'd like, you should check it out. I promise it doesn't suck.

Yeah, I know, I know, I'm working on the next chapter. But I'm also working on a novel, so all of my writing energy is currently directed elsewhere. I'm also exhausted now that the year is finally over and I've got all of my marks back. I figure a 2:1 isn't bad for first year. But I've then got the added stress of dealing with the NHS autism people, the student well-being people, and the Student Finance people about equipment and support for next year. And then there's all of the crap with having to find an extra housemate because one of them is leaving for China next year...

So, yeah... I'm busier than I quite have words for...
