It's amazing.
Although, the thumb is the largest and have three bones too. The thumb almost starts at the wrist, but the first bone is "hidden". This can help you to don't make plain edges when the hand is making a "curve".

I suppose it all comes from observation
also, there's something I learned in school, that in guys, the ring finger is longer than the index finger, but in girls, the ring finger is shorter than the index finger.
