Description
This is fanart from the book "Howl's Moving Caslte" by Diana Wynne Jones. After doing a deviantART search of "Howl's Moving Castle" and coming up with nothing but movie fanart I felt it was time to pay tribute to the book.Anyway, here you can see Wizard Howl, AKA Soceror Jenkin, AKA Wizard Pendragon, AKA Horrible Howl, AKA Sylvester Oak, AKA… you get the idea… off over the moors above Upper Folding to do some lady hunting with his ill-fated guitar. You can see the castle in the background, all tall turrets and belching smoke. I have tried to keep it as close to the description in the book as possible, with the lumpy coal bricks and the small door in the side. I wanted to somehow stick Calcifer in the picture, but I guess I shall have to do another one just for him. I think he will rather like that. Howl is, of course, still in his "fantastical blue-and-silver suit". I admit I am not much for designing clothes, and I have no idea what "inlets" are, but still I think it looks like something Howl would wear.

Mixed media watercolors and colored pencil on matting board. Original size is a rather large 11"x14" and had to be scanned in two parts. Took a total of about six hours over three days.

Thank you for doing art based on the book. The castle looks just like I pictured it.

Oh, yay!!! It's the castle from the book! I was actually looking around DA for *any* Howl's Moving Castle art that wasn't from the movie, and your picture caught my eye. Great wizardly robes! He looks so properly stylish/flamboyant. Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite books ever; so glad to see some fanart for it!
P.S. ...AKA Twinkle. -_-

Thank you!
Though I enjoyed the movie, I really think the book has magic all it's own, and deserves just as much (if not more) recognition!
Re: P.S. Twinkle ith brilliant!

*nod* Agreed. The movie only uses half the plot threads, and drops most of them by the end. I feel like it's really beautiful, visually, but the book is a much more complex and satisfying narrative.
ohhhhh Twinkle. I would send him to bed without supper, too!

I certainly prefer the book—more vivid, and tasty… somehow. But I still enjoy watching the movie for its own merits.

I thought the same thing, about making fanart for the book rather than the movie. I actually prefer the book overall, but the movie is wonderful as well, quite gorgeous. Then again, that's all the more reason to make art from the book. The movie is already stunning, the book is the one that could use the visual supplementation (after all, it is filled with enough poignant description).

Great picture - nice to see some book loyalty! The film was alright but only if you totally dissosciate it from the book - as an adaptation i thought it was appalling!

You definitely did the book justice. The castle is how it's described in the book, not as the chicken thing in the film and I love the colourings in the background. It creates a great atmosphere. Awesome work!

Oh how I love this book! When I heard there was a movie I was excited, once i saw it though, I was rather put out. It took a second viewing some time later to properly appreciate the movie as its own thing. I love how you did the castle here, formidable yet tumbledown.

I bought the book yesterday!! It's kinda hard to imagine Howl differently, for I always had the movie as reference. I'm glad to find stuff that's closer to the book, eventhough I loved Miyazaki's Love Howl's Moving Castle!!

lovely drawing style and really *has a first edition with howl on the cover* really feel like describing howls clothes exactly though sooo i will howls coat is just past knee length, buttoned in the picture to the waist can't see lapels, huge silver buttons, very high collar, wide folded cuffs, entirely sky blue and covered in silver squiggles, two hip pockets, white frilly lace showing through sleeves and front of collar, black trousers look like they're joined to black high heel boots with huge huge huge gold buckles

It's good to see some love for the book, which is my favorite in the world. Also, the reference to his "ill-fated guitar" makes me laugh for the nerdiest reason possible - a friend of mine created a Howl character for a D&D game I ran, and once when Howl was unconscious the rest of the party took his guitar and smashed it to stop him from making untrained Perform checks.
. . . /supernerd.

I thought that outfit looked familiar despite not having been in the Miyazaki movie. I read the book before the movie and was a bit miffed at what was missed and changed in the film. This isn't to mean I hated the movie; it just wasn't the book. I mean come on! Miyazaki left out: the spell poems, calcifer's real appearance (with the exception of ONE quick scene), where the door led when the knob was on "black" setting, what really happened to the Witch of the Waste, and of course, Sophie's hidden power!
Would very much like to know where the crow-transformation thing came from!
But i digress..... Your piece is lovingly true to the book and I thank you immensely for that! Totally faving it!

I like this. No one ever does drawings of the book's characters, but the MOVIE's characters. Know what I mean? I liked the book more, really. I mean, even Michael (Markl) was portrayed as a little boy on the movie when he was actually, what, 15 years old? Older maybe? It was a little silly, really. And Sophie looked different too. I really like this, though.
Thanks for drawing it.
