Description This is fanart from the book "Howl's Moving Caslte" by Diana Wynne Jones. After doing a deviantART search of "Howl's Moving Castle" and coming up with nothing but movie fanart I felt it was time to pay tribute to the book.

Anyway, here you can see Wizard Howl, AKA Soceror Jenkin, AKA Wizard Pendragon, AKA Horrible Howl, AKA Sylvester Oak, AKA… you get the idea… off over the moors above Upper Folding to do some lady hunting with his ill-fated guitar. You can see the castle in the background, all tall turrets and belching smoke. I have tried to keep it as close to the description in the book as possible, with the lumpy coal bricks and the small door in the side. I wanted to somehow stick Calcifer in the picture, but I guess I shall have to do another one just for him. I think he will rather like that. Howl is, of course, still in his "fantastical blue-and-silver suit". I admit I am not much for designing clothes, and I have no idea what "inlets" are, but still I think it looks like something Howl would wear.

Mixed media watercolors and colored pencil on matting board. Original size is a rather large 11"x14" and had to be scanned in two parts. Took a total of about six hours over three days.

Character and story © Diana Wynne Jones. Art © myself.
Enjoy!

You were right! I do love it!! Yay for Howl. I'm going to have to reread the book so that I can study the description passages. I love Howl's cloak. It certainly is fantastical. And the castle looks downright menacing.

I like the twiggy thing in the center foreground.

The image is beautiful.
I have heard abou the movie and the book, but coukld never afford it... so I cannot say anything, but its good to see that you try to follow the books description.
And how can you mix watercolours with coloured pencils?
Do you have to wait before the water dries and then go to work with the coloured pencils? ..^^' Just wondering, hope ya didnt mind me asking.

About water colors and colored pencils:

They way I use them is I usually do the background first in watercolor, and then later I come back and do the forground character (Howl, in this case) in colored pencil. Once the background is completely dry (this takes about a day) I'll go back in with my pencils and do very minor touch ups.

The end result is something that's a cross of watercolors and colored pencils. Personally, I really like the combo.

Oh, I got to try that out one day.
Thank you for telling me about this sounds like a very nice way to work if you ask me^_^
I have only done work with entire coloured pencils or watercolours.
Mweheh..

The one trick with combining WCs with CPs here is that it's good to use a stiff, solid surface like heavy bristol board. I use raw mat board, the kind you use to mat pictures and prints. It's cheaper, and you can get it in varying thicknesses.

The reason you want something thick is to prevent wrinkles. When you put watercolors on paper it with inevitably wrinkle, but because there has been water applied all over you get regular, smooth ripples. Now, pencils will flatten paper, because of the pressure used to apply them. When you combine this it warps the paper with all sorts of weird looking ripples. It looks fine in real life, but it's almost impossible to get a good scan.

An example of what I'm talking about is this: [link] This was done on ordinary watercolor paper. When the paper is flattened in the scanner the ripples in the WC part of the paper flatten out, but stretch and warp the smooth pencil part in the process.

Compare to this: [link] which was done on heavy weight matboard. There are no wrinkles, and it appears flat.

Obviously you're welcome to experiment with whatever you like, this is just something I wish I'd known before I started.

Have fun!

Maybe your local library has the book. A lot of libraries have books by Diana Wynne Jones. (My library has most of her books.) She's a really great writer. Sometimes, even if your library doesn't have it, you can do inter-library loan where it gets sent to your library from another library.

I read that book last month for my book club. I was very impressed by how good it was! (I haven't seen the movie, yet)

Very lovely picture of Howl. Definitely how I pictured him while reading the story.

Oh yay!

I love the book and really wanted to do it justice.

The movie is really great too. Different, but still really, really great. Calcifer is disturbingly cute.

I'm hoping to rent to the movie soon. It'll be interseting to see how it's different from the book. A cute Calcifer. I can't wait to see that.

I really would like to read more of her books when I get the time.

All her stuff is really awesome. The Chrestomanci books are a good place to start, so is Eight Days of Luke and Power of Three.

It's so great to see "Howl's Moving Castle" fanart! I bought the movie, watched it several times, and JUST found out it was based on a book. So, I purchased the book, and will start reading it tonight!!!

Great job, Elrond-chan!!! I love Howl's pretty blue jacket!!! Loving the background!! You worked really hard on this, and it looks terrific!!!

Yay! I'm so glad you like this!

Really, I've been a huge fan od Diana Wynne Jones about as long as I've been a fan of Miyazaki and when I found out about the movie I totally spazzed.

The ONE thing that bothered me was that so many people didn't seem to know it was based on a book! All the press is like "Miyazaki is wonderful!" "Miyazaki is amazing!" — which he IS — but the book is just as fantastic!

Thanks for the fave, and happy reading!

Didn't Diana Wynne Jones write another book that Miyazaki based a movie on? I wanna say yes, but for the life of my, can't remember. When I searched on Amazon, I know there were several other titles that popped up, and I was like, "Whoa...Miyazaki must like Diana's work!!"

GoldeenHerself In reply to JLFEclipse [2006-03-16 16:42:21 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah! I think you might be remembering "Castle in the Sky", which was one of Miyazaki's first movies. (It's a very good movie, too!)

It's not based on one of DWJ's books, although she did write a book called "Caslte in the Air" which — get this — is actually a sort-of sequel to "Howl's Moving Castle". (!)

Just one of those kinky things.
