Description
This is fanart from the book "Howl's Moving Caslte" by Diana Wynne Jones. After doing a deviantART search of "Howl's Moving Castle" and coming up with nothing but movie fanart I felt it was time to pay tribute to the book.Anyway, here you can see Wizard Howl, AKA Soceror Jenkin, AKA Wizard Pendragon, AKA Horrible Howl, AKA Sylvester Oak, AKA… you get the idea… off over the moors above Upper Folding to do some lady hunting with his ill-fated guitar. You can see the castle in the background, all tall turrets and belching smoke. I have tried to keep it as close to the description in the book as possible, with the lumpy coal bricks and the small door in the side. I wanted to somehow stick Calcifer in the picture, but I guess I shall have to do another one just for him. I think he will rather like that. Howl is, of course, still in his "fantastical blue-and-silver suit". I admit I am not much for designing clothes, and I have no idea what "inlets" are, but still I think it looks like something Howl would wear.

Mixed media watercolors and colored pencil on matting board. Original size is a rather large 11"x14" and had to be scanned in two parts. Took a total of about six hours over three days.
Character and story © Diana Wynne Jones. Art © myself.
Enjoy!

You're welcome. I like the movie, but I still like the book better — which just goes to show how much I love DWJ's work, but I also adore Miyazaki. To me it just seemed like he was doing his own thing with the movie, and I liked it a lot; it's just the book was more… complete. It had all the extra twinkles and sparkles that you just can't fit into the medium of a movie.

Exactly. The thing that annoyed me the most with the movie was that his family wasn't there. Little Mari was so cute--his relationship with her was absolutely adorable--and Miyazaki didn't show it. I love Miyazaki, don't get me wrong--and I loved the movie, but the book is better, I think. I wish I could find a pic of Mari and Howl--their greeting! ^^-

I hope you've also read Castle in the Air (a sequel to Howl's Moving Castle), and guess what! DWJ just published House of Many Ways, another sequel to Howl's Moving Castle. It's really great, too!

Is Castle in the air any good? Do they all still have Howl in?

Yes & Yes. To be fair, both Castle in the Air and House of Many Ways start out with different groups of characters and Howl comes in as a minor character (in excellently satisfying ways) in the second half of both books.
Also there are some new characters from Castle in the Air that show up in House of Many Ways.

Actually, the movie looked completely different! But it was really fun to someone else's vision: because it was so different the book and the movie are very separate in my head; albeit both equally good.

HAH! Someone drew the silver suit! Still...I rather liked the lady-catching suit, and I think that's the one they had in the anime.
...I love Howl 'n all, but Sophie is just plain awesome, especially her brand of magic. Do you have any pictures of her (ish browsing through your gallery once more for the heck of it)?

No offence to Miyazaki but he wasn't at all close. Then again I doubt that he was trying to be.

I think Miyazaki was very much doing his own thing. Which I think is good: it was his own movie, but all the heart of the book was in it.
I read an interview with Diana Wynne Jones about the movie: apparently she liked it and got along with Miyazaki very well — and very much enjoyed his rendition of Howl.
But I like my version of the castle better.

I actually didn't see it until I could get it on DVD: the nearest theater is a 45 minute drive away, but they only play big blockbuster craptacular and Oscar-nominated movies. The nearest theater that was showing it was two hours away!
Curse them and their sub-par distributing! Grr.

I only had to drive an hour and a half and we shopped afterward.
The nearest theater to me is 20 minutes away but it only has the same sort of movies yours has.
You'd think with fourteen screens it would have some space for a Miyazaki film.
