The current year is 2070. In the 2020s, a global event called 'The Flood' occurred. Vast areas of the world were covered in ocean waters, and wars raged. Russia collapsed, the People's Republic of China was overthrown. America absorbed the failing states of Mexico and Canada.

Half a century later, the world has mostly calmed down. Humanity has many colonies in space, and has contacted many alien races (its even defeated one, during a war). Most governments have colonies in outer space. Humanity has expanded outside of our own solar system even.

The United Nations gained a lot more power in the flood, and now there are caps on the number of soldiers national armies are allowed to have. In space, the only armies that are allowed to exist are the U.N.'s. Democracy is now global, and only the Siberians (With their multiparty dictatorship), and the Turkestanis (with their religious Caliphate) are truly authoritarian by this world's standards (though by our time's standards, there better run than most Central Asian states). Siberia and Turkestan are also the only nations on the planet that do not use the otherwise global currency.

About 50% of the U.S. is nonreligious/agnostic/atheist. That number is much higher in Europe. Most of the people in the world who are religious are much more unorganized. Protestantism has suffered the most from people converting to Atheism. The largest religions are Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism (in that order).

Drugs (especially Cannabis)are common, alcohol and tobacco are not. Genetic engineering of humans is common. Travel is more common (visiting another continent is like visiting another U.S. state is now). Most people are self-employed. Service jobs are the most common, with fewer people growing food or working in factories. Gays are treated equally, and the religious right of the early 21st century is viewed as evil. Most people get lots of tattoos (that are easily removable)
