Description I'm certain those of you well acquainted with me are aware that I'm a fan of the old (somewhat) obscure '80s cartoon, The Raccoons. I've written numerous stories about it, and posted many screencaps and character collages. I like to think I may have helped the old series gain a little bit more attention! Well, while I'm still into the Raccoons, I recently discovered another cute cartoon about furries. A show similar to the Raccoons in some ways (similar setting, furry protagonists, both franchises started out with Christmas specials in the '80s) and different in others (it took a lot longer to become a TV series, it's a bit more fantastic and magical, if you will). It's not as good as the Raccoons IMO, but it's still adorable and charming enough that it has wound up winning me over. (It's-arguably-even cuter!) Yes, folks-I have recently gotten into the forgotten '80s/'90s franchise Chucklewood Critters! And since it's obscure enough, I figure I'd give it the "screencap" treatment as well. Rather than diving right into doing that proper, though, I figure I'd start off with character collages of the series' major characters, to introduce them properly. So where better to start with one of the two ridiculously adorable protagonists-Buttons!

Buttons is a young bear cub who lives in the beautiful forested area of Chucklewood Park. He's the only child of Abner and Bridget, and lives in a cave with his parents along with his best friend, a fox cub named Rusty, along with his folks. (Yes, this series depicts a family of bears and a family of foxes living together. Something that would definitely never happen in real life, but it's a kid's cartoon; who said they had to be realistic? ) Buttons and Rusty are the stars of this series, and the numerous specials and TV series itself focus heavily on their adventures in the wide world around them. Buttons is a very curious and naive little fellow-he and Rusty, both being young, don't know very much about the world they live in and are always eager to explore and learn more about it. They often learn new ideas and things from the local forest ranger, Ranger Jones (yes, this series actually features anthros regularly interacting with human beings!), and their teacher/mentor figure, Franklin the owl (who also sometimes raps to teach the cubs new information...eh...something from this series I could honestly do without ). They even created their own flying machine from an old model car, which they call "The Adventure Machine" (to be honest, had I seen this series as a kid, I definitely would've wanted to have the Adventure Machine!). Buttons also has a little crush on a female bear cub named Bearbette, but you'll see her and learn more about that later...

Naturally seeing as this is a kid's series and the cubs have a passion for adventure... they end up finding themselves in a whole heap of trouble more often than not. However, I don't think either Buttons or Rusty are really bad kids...their tendency to find trouble stems more from their innocence about things and lack of knowledge and experience, not from any actual desire to cause trouble or stir things up. All in all, I'd say they are good-hearted kids, and their excitement and enthusiasm at exploring is certainly infectious! Plus, it's really nice to see these two just enjoying being kids

And of course Buttons is ridiculously adorable. He looks a lot like an anthropomorphic teddy bear, wouldn't you say? That is probably why he's called "Buttons"-after all, he has those little button eyes you'd expect from a teddy bear! (They probably could have called this character "Ted", but somehow "Ted and Rusty" doesn't roll off the tongue quite as well as "Buttons and Rusty"). How exactly could someone like me with a penchant for cuteness resist a series with protagonists this darned cute?

Well, that's Buttons. Next up is his best friend and co-protagonist, the energetic fox cub Rusty! (Who is probably my favorite character in this whole franchise ) (And sorry for the lengthy summary, but if you know me well...You've gotten used to that haven't you? )

This is a very nicely done collage. I didn't think you would get into Chucklewood Critters though?

I just recently came across this series It's kind of funny, the TV show itself apparently was actually airing when I was a kid in the target audience it was aiming for, but I never saw it. A pity I didn't because I think I would've totally eaten it up as a little boy. Even discovering it as an adult...I admit there are some aspects I'm not a big fan of and probably would've liked a lot more as a kid (the rapping for one Gotta be honest!), but it's still a very cute and charming little franchise. Most of the specials are very nice and the TV series is quite cute Plus, as I said, how can I resist a series with protagonists this darn adorable? (Having a fox as one of the protagonists helps too )

But yeah, keep your eyes open for more of these in the coming days. In particular, Buttons' dad Abner's collage should be pretty hilarious as...well, he kinda reminds me of Homer Simpson, if you stripped him of his most unsavory aspects and placed him in a more kid-friendly show. Often lazy and extremely accident-prone

Abner and Homer Simpson, now there's a pairing that....Somehow works?

Fortunately the rapping only exists in the TV show and not the specials as far as I'm aware.

Well, he isn't as bad as Homer-this is a kids' series after all!-but he's definitely got some of the "Homer traits", as I like to call them. I could see Homer being portrayed like this if the Simpsons were more of an program aimed at the younger folks

I must admit, it doesn't really bug me when the cubs are rapping because...well, they're kids, it does make sense they would find something like that to be cool. When the adults do it, however...Hehheh, comes off as more than a little cheesy. There's something I find really dorky about older folks trying hard to appear cool to the younger generations, but maybe it's just me. In particular, I can't help but laugh at how in one of the episodes Buttons and Rusty's mothers start rapping (complete with putting saucepans on their heads!) about how each family is unique in its own way, and they're impressed by it. Somehow I think most kids would be rather mortified by their Moms doing something like that than impressed It's certainly not enough to make me hate the series, though

Silly yes, but it gets kids attention and it makes it look innocent if anything.

I was actually trying to respond to this comment earlier when the power went out where I live due to a thunderstorm. Ain't it grand when something like that happens?

But yes, I had to include some of Buttons' sillier moments here. How could I not include the moment from "The Turkey Caper" where he gets the funny hat stuck on his head? (He's got a really small head if that completely covers it...) But oh, just you wait 'til I get to Mr. Abner

Well I look forward to seeing Abner as well. Oh, and about the whole thunderstorm thing, it can happen to anyone.
