Description Well, I started off my new collection of "Chucklewood Critters" character collages with one of the two adorable protagonists, Buttons, so it only makes sense to follow that up with one of his best friend and co-protagonist, Rusty, the energetic little fox cub!

Rusty is the only child of George and Rosie (or is it Rosey? Some images of old VHS tapes of the specials spell her name that way...), and lives in a cave in Chucklewood Park with his best friend Buttons and his parents. Really, a lot of the same things I said about Buttons could be said about Rusty-they're pretty similar characters. Both of them are very curious and adventurous, but are also rather innocent and naive about the world and the way things are supposed to work, which often leads them to finding trouble (Kind of mean screencapping a scene where he gets a Frisbee stuck in his mouth ). If anything, the biggest difference between them is that I'd have to say Rusty seems a little more energetic than Buttons. They're both pretty energetic characters but Rusty always seems to be the more excitable of the two. If anything, I think he might be a little hyper (probably not the kind of kid who should overindulge in sugar lest he wind up bouncing off the walls! ) He also seems to be more of the "thinker" of the two, as he tends to come up with ideas more often than Buttons. He's also already aware of the stereotype that foxes are supposed to be sly and crafty ("Remember, I'm a fox! We're supposed to be pretty smart about getting out of messes like this!"). In one of the specials, he encounters a cute little vixen named Frisky who he immediately falls head over heels for, and although it's not really hinted much at throughout the series itself, I think he still harbors a torch for her

Though mischievous, as I said for Buttons, I don't think Rusty is a bad kid-just innocent and naive about things. One really positive thing I can say about the cubs is that they don't have hatred towards anybody-if somebody is in trouble, whether or not they really deserve it, they will always try to help them out. All in all, I think Rusty'll grow up alright

Might as well confront the obvious elephant in the room (which is funny because there was an episode of the series about that!)...Rusty has a bit of an unusual design. Those big bright blue eyes are certainly cute, but they're a trait you'd normally expect from a female character in a series starring anthros. In the earliest specials he also has a voice that sounds rather feminine even for a child...I could easily see people back in the day being confused over whether Rusty was a boy or a girl, though it's obvious that he's male considering he has a crush on Frisky! Really, Rusty definitely looks like a combination of his parents-he has his father's colors, but the eyes of his mother. Pretty obvious who his parentage is

And I must say...he's got to be quite possibly the most adorable character I've come across to date. Maybe it's because I have a fondness for foxes, but he's just so frickin' cute! Seriously, if they ever made a Rusty plush, I would totally want to have one! Sadly, I don't think any actually exist as this was not a particularly popular series....

Up next, meet the cubs' fathers! I'll start off with Buttons' father, Abner-and oh boy is he one goofy father

Boy Rusty, how your fur changes.

I definitely know that in the TV series (and some later specials I believe) he is voiced by Mona Marshall, who has done quite a lot of cartoons and anime during her career.

This is one franchise (even more so than the Raccoons!) where you can really observe animation evolution in action, probably because it took a decade-and-a-half to become a TV series In particular, the '80s specials look very much like they came from Hanna-Barbera-indeed, that was probably the first thing that ran through my mind when watching them. So it didn't really come as a surprise to discover that Bill Hutten and Tony Love were Hanna-Barbera alumni. No wonder the style looked familiar!

Yeah, I like the voice Mona Marshall gave Rusty in the show-very cute and cheerful without making him sound overly feminine like in the early specials. Honestly...I could kind of picture my original Raccoons character Michael having a voice like that Like I said, it's a pity I don't think this franchise had any merchandise outside of VHSes and DVDs...you gotta admit characters like Rusty look like they would just be naturals to have as plushies

Encore Enterprises LLC probably wanted to make a toy deal sometime, but sadly couldn't for one reason or another?

Yep, that explains the similar styles and why the specials look the way they do.

Great now I can imagine Michael sounding like Terriermon from Digimon Tamers now.

I'm happy to hear that you like foxes in general too.

Another good one. Nice job!!! I also gotta say, he looks real cute in his Robin Hood-esque outfit. Really reminds me of the 1973 Disney film.

Disney's Robin Hood: The Early Years, starring Rusty as Robin Hood So if Rusty is Robin, does that make Buttons 'Little' John?

Kidding aside, yeah, he certainly is one cute little fella. Like I said, I think it's a shame this series didn't really have any merchandise that I know of outside of VHSes and DVDs. You'd think Buttons and Rusty would be natural choices to have plushies of! Like I said, I guess it's kind of mean including a pic of him from "Which Witch is Which?" with the Frisbee in his mouth, but I thought it was funny, so...why not Don't try that with wildlife at home!

Yeah, I think Buttons and Rusty (and possibly Bearbette and Frisky) would've been eligible for plushies.
