Description Revised: Nose leather made wider, right eye perspective tweaked. Going to go ahead and put this up for print...

The Maltese Tiger

The Maltese Tiger is an enigma amongst large cats, for there are reports of it being seen in the wild, but there is no proof of its existence except for a few tufts of blue-grey hair found in the mountains of China. Its rarity is understandable (if it does truly exist), since descriptions have lent it to be assumed to be a color mutation in the South China tiger, which is critically endangered - only 20-50 are thought to be left in the wild.

---EDIT:---
The only known blue tiger: [link]
This cub is psuedo-melanistic, having thick black stripes that almost entirely cover its primary color. Tigers are known to be darker when younger and pale as they age - I personally wonder if this cub would have grown to become a white tiger, but it was killed by its mother after being born in an Oklahoma zoo.
Thank you to ~00BlacKBerrY00 for the information I failed to find myself
---/EDIT---
---EDIT2:---
The blue tiger cub born in Oklahoma was a hypermelanic cub born in 1964 to two normally-colored bengal parents. BookRags reports it as dying in infancy, rather than being killed. It confirms the smoky blue color of its fur between the black striping
---/EDIT---

There are several things that I feel weak about this image, but I'm not about to tell what they are.

8.5" x 5.5" (half a sheet of A4) 65lb drawing paper
Crayola colored pencils

Why so small? Because it's a travelling sketchbook, since I can't fit my whole one in my purse! I do these drawings on my downtime during my 12-hour shifts at work! :3

Please do not use without my permission! Thank you!

The eyes of the Tiger are gorgeous and the colors bring out the animal more *0*. And I noticed that one eye is bigger than the other one (which makes it even more unique) .

Oh God, I had no idea somebody had come across the same image as I did. I took mine from a magazine, did this [link] , posted it and went to #Wildlife-Artists feline gallery to submit but this came up. I swear, I did not copy off of yours. D:

You did a very fine job though, cheers to you!

I would not suspect you of copying. I did come across the source image out of the blue, I was half hoping no one else had ever seen it, lol.

But I read on a site that a smokey blue tiger was born in Oklahoma in the 1960s, and was preserved. [link]

Thank you for the link! Much of this information can also be found on the wikipedia page. Had I known it came from messybeast I would have gone to read it directly, but the site is very difficult to navigate. D:

"There are no blue tigers in captivity today - if there were, the recessive gene would make it easy to fix the trait. If a smokey blue tiger was born in the Woodland Park Zoo, this would be the only captive blue tiger. There are no blue tiger pelts in museums or private collections and the images here are artist's impressions."

The images they have of blue tigers on the messybeast blue tiger page are all edits. The one preserved blue tiger they speak of is this image [link] , a psuedo-melanistic cub born in an Oklahoma zoo who was killed by its mother, and preserved as a curiosity. I wonder if its fur would lighten with age, to become a white tiger? But alas, we will never know. :<

Oh too bad! I am always amazed by how powerful an animal's senses are.The mother sensed that something was wrong about her cub and choose to end it's suffering.

I like how you made the eyes extra large than normal, very nice
(but I can't help but feel the nose could have been a bit larger) Other than that, it's perfect!

goofoofighter In reply to anonymous771 [2011-06-09 01:51:24 +0000 UTC]

I noticed that too. I've been trying to think of ways that I can reclaim it, but I haven't had a great amount of luck getting Crayolas to erase. :<

goofoofighter In reply to anonymous771 [2011-06-09 03:44:31 +0000 UTC]

I've managed to make a nose a bit larger (not yet updated here on dA), and it doesn't look too bad, but I think I might try to push it a little further. Turns out I wasn't being assertive enough with my eraser. If I haven't driven the tip too far into the paper, it seems to come off just fine.

Oh wow... I had totally forgotten about that! God I used to have problems with that all the time... Then my profs taught me how to check and check and check to make sure everything was completely right before coming to finish. You've just now made me realize how little I erase these days! xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

anonymous771 In reply to goofoofighter [2011-06-09 15:16:45 +0000 UTC]

LOL Well, I guess that can be a good thing ^^
Well, maybe you shouldn't change it, and just try to do better on your next picture. It's still a lovely piece of art, you should keep it. That's what being an artist means is to learn from your mistakes so you can get better. Besides, the nose's size isn't that noticeable anyway

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

goofoofighter In reply to anonymous771 [2011-06-10 03:17:10 +0000 UTC]

I did make some changes, and I think it looks better for it. (You can see for yourself - I updated the image ) My professor did his best to teach us not to be too afraid to go back and retouch parts of a masterwork.

...Even if it was like 60 hours in and the eraser makes a huge smear that won't go away. He'd tell us to work it in to the image or to have patience enough to start over. xD If he were tutoring me while I was drawing it, he would have told me to start over like six times because I was taking parts of it too close to being finished while the rest was still only blocked-in tones. That was always my bad habit! xD

Amazing detail and use of light and shadow.
The only thing I see that's a little off about this piece is the perspective of the tiger's right eye.
It appears to be unnaturally larger than the other eye, when it should be the same size or smaller than the left.
Other than that, beautiful piece, it really caught my eye
