Eliza shook rain from her pelt as she stopped before her chieftain's den, eyes clouded. She raised her muzzle to search the endlessly gray sky, blinking as raindrops blurred her vision. She took a breath and lowered her gaze. rapping a paw against the great roots of the tree. "Sa- Chieftain Sage? May I come in?"

Sage pricked his ears, not expecting a visitor. His thoughts were caught in the web of worries, pondering the recent events. He supposed that paw steps had blended with the soft pitter patter of rain. “Eliza,” he greeted, not catching himself in time to use formalities. “Uh— yes, come in,” he nodded, sitting up.

Eliza stepped into the den, shaking rain from her pelt. She sat down nearby, licking her damp pelt. “I... I know I don’t necessarily have authority to do this, but I was wondering if you’d like council on the current situation. We need to make a decision... there’s not a lot of time to waste spinning. And the colony needs reassurance, soon.”

Sage blinked, pondering a moment before nodding in agreement. “No, you’re right. Right now, everyone is tense, thoughts are scattered; I don’t even know what to think. Admittedly, I think the safest course of action would be to agree to Lily Colony’s demands, but many cats don’t think so.” He stared into the corner of his den at little green caterpillar was inching its way down the wall. “A decision should be made.”

“I have to agree with you. Our treaty agreed that our cats would not be put in danger like this. Our first loyalty is to Foxglove Colony.” She stood up and padded over to him. “Look... you’re going to have to make an unpopular decision no matter what you do. You can’t make everyone happy.”

He lifted his paw as she approached, slightly uncomfortable. Her breath was warm enough to create a swirling cloud of mist, only visible for a moment before it washed away. “I know.” He was silent a few moments, pondering. “Was that what you came to say, Eliza? Do yo agree with what you’re saying?"

"Yes, Sage, I do. There are lives at stake here. I needed to know that you would make the right decision."

He nodded, pleased to hear that she agreed; that she was satisfied. He had always thought she had good judgment. “That’s good to hear. Alright.” Lifting his chin and gazing out of his den, ears pricked to listen to the hushed voices of his anxious colonists. They, surely, wouldn’t like this, but for the good of them all, he’d argue it.
“Is that all you need, Eliza?”

"I believe so. Do you have any other concerns?"

Sage furrowed his brow, sighing. “Admittedly, yes. I’m worried about how the colony will respond; many would prefer to fight for them. If… you could help me out and try to convince them that this is for the good of everyone, I would appreciate it.” He curled the end of his tail as he rose to his paws.

Eliza nodded. "I need to run a patrol, but when I get back I'll back you." She stood and padded to the entrance of the den. In the threshold, she stopped and turned her head. "... Good luck, Chieftain Sage." She flicked her tail, then disappeared through the vines.
